ATI Stream TechnologyATI Stream technology is a set of advanced hardware and software technologies that enable AMD graphics processors (GPUs), working in concert with the system’s central processors (CPUs), to accelerate enabled applications beyond traditional graphics and video processing. This enables balanced platforms to run computationally-intensive tasks more efficiently, providing a better application experience to the end user.

Pros: Works in Ubuntu 10.10 (x86) with HDMI Audio. Plays 1080p '.mkv's'. Also plays most yootube 720p video's w/o massive dropped frames since much of the HD Flash content is now offloaded to GPU (very unexpected), I've yet to hear the GPU fan over my CPU fan. Does what I expected, will keep this box usable for a couple more years.
Cons: Price. We're getting shafted because we have no better AGP option. Even OC'd to 3.61ghz still can't play 1080p youtube videos (it maxes the CPU & looks like a slide-show), not unexpected. Playback is not perfect on all videos, scenes with lots of camera movement or high motion close-ups (every pixel needs re-rendered for every frame) on 720p looks like a slide-show. 'VLC Player' worked perfect with previous card and opensource 'radeon' driver. Now motion is quite jerkey & dialogue sync is sometimes off. Switched to 'gxine.real' player. It's not near as nice a player, but HD picture is flawless (except high motion as noted above). The ATI 'fglrx' driver comes with underscan enabled which causes lost screen real-estate (black bars around edges). There is a fix, I haven't tried it yet. Haven't had a chance to run "$ sudo ati-config --initial -f" yet. Things might get better once I do.
Overall Review: This machine is a game-free HTPC. ASUS P4P800-E Dlx, Intel P4 3.0 HT, 2.5gb RAM, DVD-RW (no BlueRay ROM), 52" Sony Bravia 1080p HDTV. Got 'Purple Screen of Death' at install connected to HDTV. Had to connect CRT monitor & boot from Grub2 into recovery mode in order to undo all the config changes made for previous ATI X850XT PE card. Then installed propriatery Linux 'fglrx' driver from Ubuntu repository and BAM! For HDMI audio all I did was select it in the sound-control panel and it's perfection. Easy and an unexpected BONUS!! I found conflicting info on the opensource driver. One wiki.ubuntu said the only driver that will work for this card (and a couple other PCI-E backported to AGP cards) is the 'fglrx'. Another 'redeon' page listed this card on a list of supported cards. But opensource 'radeon' driver didn't work for me.
