can this printer use 11x17 paper?

Yes, the paper tray will hold legal size paper but I have never used legal size in it.  I just extended the paper tray out and put some legal size paper in it and placed the paper tray back into the printer.  When using legal size paper, the paper tray extends out from the printer and does not close completely.  But, I believe it is designed that way so that you can print legal sized documents from it.  If your printer is out of the way, it won't matter if the paper tray doesn't completely close. but if it's in the "right-of-way," you will probably want to remove the legal size paper when you're finished using it so that the paper tray will close completely and not stick out 2-3 inches.

I can not answer this question because I do not have Windows 8, I only have Windows 7!  What I can say is it is a wonderful printer!  The quality of the print is great and  it is a very functional, trouble-free printer.  It scans and copies beautifully.  Although it is not the fastest printer/copier, the quality makes it worth waiting for!  I frequently copy two-sided copies, sometimes 30-40 copies.  It processes a two-sided original and makes 30-40 copies (also two-sided) all by itself while I do other work.

Is this printer compatible with Windows 8?

Yes - I am using it from a Windows 8 machine.

It also has print-via-email capabilities, which allows you to print from virtually anywhere after setting up an account with HP. I've found this works best by sending an empty email with just a PDF attachment. (I've had mixed results with Word document attachments.)

Can you add a second tray to this printer?

I'm not sure - as I have only the standard tray - and HP doesn't specify on their web site.  But under ACCESSORIES, it shows this under "Input Trays":  "HP LaserJet 250-sheet Paper Feeder; (CF106A);" for $115.00 so I would say that there IS an additional tray you can buy that will hold 250 more sheets of paper.

Why don't you call HP and ask?  That's what I would do!

what is the average cost of ink to print on this printer for average coverage? 20 cents a page or ???
is one better ink cost wise than another I print a lot of photos and print. Tommy

NO ONE can say what it will cost YOU to print per page as it depends entirely on WHAT you print.  If you print a lot of colored photographs, the cost per page will be higher than my cost, as I only print pages with a line or two of color - not the entire page as in a photo.  The cartridges are expensive, as you probably know from the web site.  However, for ME, each one lasts 6-8 months so I do not spend a lot of money on cartridges.  This is a great printer - almost equals my $1600 HP Color LaserJet 4650 that is a workhorse!  ANY color LaserJet printer will be relatively costly per page for photographs - but a lot cheaper than taking them to a print shop where one colored page is usually a minimum of $1.00/page!
