Good printer 2/7/2017 7:18:34 AM

Pros: Copier, Scanner, Scans 11x17, Color Printer, ADF

The printer was easy to set up. Wireless printing was easy to configure.

I like that it scans/prints 11x17, even though I don't print that size very often.

Printing is pretty quick. It also has ethernet for hard wired connections. It also has a 250 page paper tray!

Printing speeds up to 34 ppm black, up to 34 ppm color.

All-in-all I like the printer. I'd recommend it to anyone who needs to scan/print 11x17 or just needs a good small or home office printer.

Cons: Not really a con, but this thing is huge!

Overall Review: I did not use the faxing feature, as I do not have a phone line to try it on.

Great Printer for Small to Medium Size Offices or Home Use 1/22/2017 5:02:08 PM

Pros: Before I get into the pros, I need to tell you I did receive a defective unit to begin with. I talked with HP support and they determined the ink cartridge holder was defective. They sent me a replacement unit and had me return the defective unit and the replacement unit works really great. Out of the box, this is one HEAVY printer...if you can please have someone help you remove it from the box. Setup was a breeze out of the box, just follow the on-screen instructions on the printer and then finish up by getting the drivers for your computer. One of the best features I love about this printer is its ability to print on both sides at once. It speedily prints the pages. The ink cartridges included contain a load of ink, but even if you run out, you can use HP ink refill service (cost involved) to quickly get ink once you get low. This is a great printer for offices that use 2 different page sizes as it contains 2 separate paper trays to house the different papers. The scanner on this thing is great as well as you can get great scans of important paperwork by upping the scan settings. I haven't had a chance or need to use the fax portion of the printer, but I am sure it will work for anyone that still is using that antiquated technology. One of the other great features is this is a really quiet printer, so if needs to be around employees in your office, it won't bother them while they are talking on the phone.

Cons: Other than the issue of receiving a defective unit to begin with, I really have not much in the way of cons, but just little minor annoyances. The touchscreen is a bit funky to mess around with, I had to enter in my wifi password a few times, but after you get through setup, you'll barely use it as you can control most everything through the computer. You'll want to have the paper holder extension bar open to catch the paper as it prints, otherwise it falls to the floor.

Overall Review: This is one great printer for business or someone who prints a lot at home. This is not meant to be a photo printer as others had stated in their reviews, but since photo printing is not its primary purpose I don't want to remove a rating egg. I would recommend for anyone who loves saving the planet using double sided printing and needs a quick and speedy printer.

Very nice business-class all-in-one device 1/21/2017 7:39:34 AM

Pros: - Very well built, does not feel like a cheap printer at all
- FAST printing
- Beautiful output. HP has the best black tones. Color copies actually look better than original!
- Very quiet
- Easily print from Apple devices; airprint-ready
- Easy wi-fi discovery and setup; WPS enabled for quick password setting
- HP apps for the smartphone are actually very good and usable
- Dual media trays
- "legal size" wide-format printing
- Great job with photos, if you want to use this gigantic printer for photos ;-)
- Nice document feeder on top, better than some dedicated copy machines

Cons: - Tiny LCD screen. Nearly useless on-screen keyboard (thankfully you don't have to use it too often)
- Installation was not too smooth; see comments in "other"
- Unpacking the printer had one weird issue - large pieces of cardboard wedged into media trays - if not very careful you could easily break the plastic tabs on the media trays when removing that cardboard. Really bad idea, HP.

Overall Review: I really like this printer and it instantly displaced my old Canon color printer. It dwarfs my HP LaserJet 1300 which is still my workhorse b/w printer. I can never see not having a good solid laser printer in my office.

HP gives you a nice online experience when it comes to your user account. Your printer gets its own email address, and you can do things like forward a PDF file to that address and the printer will know what to do with it. You can limit the incoming emails from a set of pre-approved sender email addresses - which I highly recommend. Nothing worse than getting spam emails in your printer output tray.

It also has a lot of settings, all of which are available from the smartphone app. Since this is an airprint printer, I want to leave it on all the time. Except overnight. So, the printer has auto-on and auto-off scheduling which is very flexible. Nice!

When going through the set-up and the settings, watch out for the 'opt-out' on HP collecting usage information from you. Some people are ok with that, which is fine. I just don't like it, and I was surprised to see that I had to tell it "no" at least twice. They should ask that question one time at the beginning -- and stick with the answer.

I pretended to have patience, and I very methodically followed the quick-install guide that came with the printer. It went well until I got to the point of downloading the software. An installation GUI utility came up and said it needed to download the rest of the software (drivers, apps, etc) -- then it simply stopped and said something like "unable to complete". Huh? I turned off firewall and anti-virus just to eliminate that as an issue. Still no joy. So I had to go the HP website, find the printer and download the drivers/software myself to complete the install. Which ended up better anyway since the version I direct-downloaded was several versions newer than what the installer was trying to install (again..huh?). So this printer loses one egg because of a silly installation glitch that should not have happened.

Final thought - you are obviously getting more value in terms of hardware, for this purchase price. This shouldn't be news to anyone, but what HP is selling you is ink. A set of replacement cartridges for this printer will run you just north of $100 and the "starter set" that the printer comes with will likely need to be replace fairly soon. This isn't a 'con', it's just a fact and all the printer manufacturers do this. Again, I find the best balance is to stick with my trust LaserJet 1300 for 90% of my printing, and use the big color printer for when it is needed.

Pleasantly Surprised 1/18/2017 4:19:19 PM

Pros: After using this printer quite a bit over the last few weeks I haven't really encountered any issues outside of the initial setup which I'll mention in my "other thoughts".
- Print quality rivals my laser jet printer.
- For an ink jet I'm amazed at how fast this printer can print. Once powered on it's ready to print within seconds. Sending a job to the printer results in almost instant printing and this thing can crank out quite a few pages per minute.
- Remote web access makes managing this thing a breeze. No more printing out status sheets.
- Continuing from there, I love the ability to automatically turn off the printer after being idle for a while. I can't tell you how many times I've had to say, "Please turn off the printer when you're done using it for the night!"
- Very efficient use of cartridges so far. After about 3 weeks of moderate use I've barely put a dent in the ink levels.
- Quick setup out of the box. Depending on your needs this will take about 5 minutes to unpack, remove the usual tape you'd find keeping things in place, and have it configured on your network.
- Two separate paper trays with adjustable sizes. Though you'll most like have standard in one and legal in the other.
- Oversized scan bed for larger documents is something you'd expect in an office printer and it is indeed there!

Cons: - The only thing (and I'm being picky here) that I could even consider a con is the top feed to make copies is a little sensitive. You need to find the sweet spot where you haven't jammed the paper in but the feeds pick it up. Else when you go to scan or copy it doesn't detect anything there and scans the bed instead.

Overall Review: So let's get two quick things out of the way.
First, as mentioned above, I had a weird 'bug' with the initial setup where the printer insisted that my password for my wireless connection was wrong. After a few frustrating, head scratching minutes I restarted the printer and immediately it was connected. For whatever reason, while my password was correct, it was telling me it was wrong but did in fact save it!
Second, this printer is BIG. Understand that going on. This is not something you would keep on your desk unless you had a fairly large L-shaped. Check the dimensions and measure first before buying.

Outside of that, I love this thing. So much that I ditched my current Laserjet for it. The quality is equal, but the additional perks this printer offers make it the smarter choice and an overall much more user friendly and feature rich experience. I am very happy to give this printer 5 out 5 eggs with a solid recommendation to buy if you're in the market.

Good special purpose printer, but not ideal for most users 1/17/2017 5:25:25 PM

Pros: This printer is very fast for an inkjet, reasonably quiet, and has a full-featured touchscreen as well as ample networking features. Following the setup process even allows you to secure a dedicated e-mail address for the printer, allowing you to send documents via e-mail directly to the printer!

While the big selling point of this huge printer is the ability to print 11"x17" documents, I particularly like the ability to scan such documents, because it allows you to scan both pages of many books in a single pass and share the scan as a single one-page document..

Cons: There are three major issues I've identified with the printer:

(1) I could not get the device to scan from its automatic document feeder. This is despite the fact that the ADF would grab the sheets, the screen would indicate that documents were loaded, and the ADF worked just fine if I selected copy. Every time I selected scan from the touchscreen, it would attempt to scan from the flatbed, which of course was empty. Perhaps this was just a glitch in my sample, but I consider it a pretty big problem.

(2) photo printing is well below average for an inkjet. I've tested a number of much less expensive inkjets from Canon and Epson, and their photo quality was much better than this model's. Now, I realize this isn't being marketed as a photo printer, but it is an expensive inkjet, and buyers will probably expect that it can top photo inkjets at half the price. It cannot. And to be clear, I tested the printer with HP's most expensive premium photo printer paper.

(3) Despite its enormous size, which you can see for yourself from the specifications, this printer has no internal paper output tray. I was shocked that I needed to use a flimsy flip-out tray to keep printed pages from shooting right out onto the floor. You really need to add another 6" of depth to position the printer on a table such that you won't risk walking into those extended trays.

Overall Review: I've owned a lot of inkjets, and none of them have impressed me all that much. There are a number of reasons for this: (1) They are slow to start up, often needing to clean their spray heads for minutes at a time before printing a single page; (2) they are slow to print, especially anything with color; (3) they are loud, especially when they shake back and forth during printing; and (4) ink dries up fast when not in use, and is expensive to replace. The Officejet Pro 7740 is a lot better in some regards, including startup time, noise, and the ability to print without shaking its foundation. But it's also bigger than most laser printers, even some color laser printers, and it costs quite a bit given its output quality.

Jack of All Trades 1/14/2017 7:36:01 PM

Pros: Suitable for small business users or home users needing wide format ability for print, scan and copy.

Scan, Copy, and Print are all easy to use. I was not able to test the Fax feature.

Fast response from the printer when using wi-fi. It leaps into action within a second of issuing a Print command (from a computer in a different room, through the router and then to the HP printer - zip!).

Good quality print for text, graphics and photos.

Wide format printing - up to 11" x 17".

Works well with Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 (haven't tried other OSes).

Integrates well with Microsoft Word.

Two paper trays. One is plain paper only. Other tray handles everything else.

Auto Document Feeder on top.

XL replacement ink cartridges available which last longer than standard cartridges.

Scan and Copy both work well enough that i didn't notice any problems. Scans converted to text were accurate up until a 5th-generation muddy page copy was scanned and converted into text with multiple errors. Any and all reasonably clear scans converted to text just fine.

Cons: Hinges on the scanner lid are of questionable strength for frequent use by careless workers in an office. Careful users should have no problem.

Scanner plate handles large (11"x17") documents, but the document feeder does not. This may disappoint some users.

Supplied ink cartridges probably won't last long. HP and others typically give you "starter" cartridges so you have to start buying replacement ink before long.

The printer's touchscreen control panel is barely large enough to use. Care is needed to avoid mistyping. Texting on my phone is much easier than this. However, once setup is complete you'll rarely need to use that panel.

Setup was easy until it reached the step where you try to connect to a wi-fi network. After entering and re-entering the correct wi-fi password the printer kept issuing a variety of error messages, each one different than the last. Messages stating that MAC filtering was enabled and preventing a connection or that the wi-fi password was incorrect both proved to be bogus. I decided to try printing a document (in spite of the error messages) and the printer worked perfectly. Only then did the error messages cease. Go figure. Wi-fi printing worked OK from several computers after that.

Limited support from HP. If you know how to look up stuff on their website or can bear to wait and chat via text you may feel support is OK. Don't bother phoning them.

One egg off for limited support, bogus error messages during setup and lack of automatic document feed for a prime feature, namely wide format scanning.

Overall Review: Print speed:
Document no. 1 - 32 pages
Content - 3 x 18-pt. headlines in blue, each headline followed by 11-pt. text, filling the entire page.
Print quality - standard.
Print on one side of paper only.
Time to complete: 1 min. 35 sec.
Comment: Good result considering each page has three large font color headlines separating large sections of small font text.

Document no. 2 - Same as above with two changes.
Print quality - grayscale.
Duplex - print on both sides of paper.
Time to complete: 3 min. 1 sec.
Comment: Duplex printing takes longer even if you print at grayscale setting. No surprise there.

Photo printing:
Photo paper used - Kodak Picture Paper "Soft Gloss".

Print setting no. 1 - Standard. 4x6 and 5x7 prints showed good color and contrast similar to drugstore photo printing.
Print setting no. 2 - Best. 8x10 portrait prints showed good color and plenty of fine detail. I would say the quality was similar or maybe slightly better than Canon and Brother inkjet printers we have used before.

Brochure printing:
A4 and 11x17 for tri-fold brochure, multi-colored.
On plain paper - smooth, clear result (but paper comes out rippled from ink saturation, of course).
On matte card stock - smooth and clear with good color (be sure to choose good saturation/color intensity). Text on colored background clearly legible.

Overall, this machine made a good impression. It prints pretty fast at standard settings, holds 250 sheets in the paper tray, has a second tray where you could load envelopes, photo paper, regular copy paper, A4 or 11x17 wide format paper. It's larger than most home printers yet smaller than some office printers offering similar features. If you need to scan book pages the scanner can handle good size volumes. Probably make a good workhorse machine in a small office or as an over-achiever in a home setting.

Very easy set up 1/9/2017 11:30:26 AM

Pros: Fast print
Double sided printing
web printing
wide format, Appx. 700 pages color about1200 pages black per cartage
80. for all ink to replace

Cons: None so far others mentioned size but it is after all a Business class printer so expect large.

Overall Review: When installing printer it will ask for a claim code and I found the easiest way to get it is to send a print job over the wireless and it will print out a page with claim code so you can add printer to your HP account. You will have to download two small apps one is services and the other is a printing app for pictures and email or just documents.
I like the wireless printing it saves me time from how I used to download document to usb from laptop then upload to desktop to be able to print so the wireless feature is great. The pictures it prints out are high quality just like you could order online or at your local picture shop.
Printing documents is fast it says 32 pages per minute so I sent a 20 page job to it and it was done in less than a minute. The dual printing is a life saver and a paper saver when you use it. I also like the way you can tilt the LCD up for easier viewing.
I also enabled quiet mode which really makes a difference. Use the HP program to maintain the printer and see level of ink and to change any of the settings that you want.
The Apps are easy to use you can print directly or add as an attachment to a email and send a email to your printers email address which you can change in settings to something you can remember easy instead of the default address which is a mixture of numbers and letters that you would have to remember. I set mine to my first initials then last name with a number on the end so it is easier to email the documents for printing.
Over all you are getting a easy to use business class wireless printer for a cheap price. The business I work for has one with less features and not as fast printing for a lot more dollars so this to me is a great value.

Surprisingly fast for an inkjet 1/8/2017 10:47:02 PM

Pros: The best feature is how fast this thing prints. Everyone knows how slow an entry level inkjet printer is and knows what it's like to wait and watch it crank out a page line by line. This inkjet is more on par with some laser printers- count to four or five and the print is done. It also doesn't take very long to get started on a print job- I remember how some inkjets took a while to set the cartridge in the right position etc, but this one gets started quick. Very impressive.

Very well featured for the price, it has most features you would want out of a higher end printer. Many many connectivity options: USB (both for hooking up to a PC or plugging in a flash drive with files), wifi, ethernet, even a phone cord jack for faxes if you still send and receive those. You can also print to it from a smartphone using an HP app, some third party apps are compatible as well (Apple Airprint for example). You get some nice print and scan features that are usually on only higher end printers as well- double sided ADF (automatic document feeder) so you can just leave a pile of papers in the tray and it'll scan both sides, two print trays so you can have different paper sizes (including wide format so you can print bigger than your standard 8 and 1/2 by 11 sheets, etc. Also has a traditional flatbed scanner so you can scan stuff like books as well.

Print quality is very good. Colors are great and would make a decent photo printer as well.

Cons: Probably the biggest con is how big this is- but I won't take off an egg for that because with a printer this well featured, it is actually pretty compact. The kinds of features you get are usually seen on printers much much larger so the fact that they managed to cram everything into something that will fit on top of an albeit large desk is pretty good. But do keep in mind that because it is a wide format printer, the pictures can be deceiving- those sheets are not letter size you see in the pics so keep that in mind. It is quite heavy (40 something pounds I believe) and the package it came in was surprisingly big.

The touch screen could be a bit bigger. I didn't really have any issues with it, but I already consider myself to have smaller hands but even then it felt a little cramped. It does pop out for a better viewing angle at least and I won't be using it too much since I mostly print from a computer so not a dealbreaker.

Finally, while I haven't printed that much with it yet, I'm not entirely sure how long the ink will last compared to a laser printer. Based on cost per page estimates, this thing can still more expensive to run than a laser printer. HP advertises 2.1 cents per black and white page and 8.1 cents per color page which apparently is pretty good but some laser printers are advertised as half that. I do like however that the three colors are in different cartridges so you don't need to waste the other colors if you only use up one.

Overall Review: Great printer for a small business or office. This printer is a bit large for home and a lot of the features probably won't be used too much in a typical household but I can see it being a better alternative to one of those huge copiers that are a size of a cabinet.
