Great investment - UPDATED 11/28/2017 11/28/2017 12:35:43 PM

Pros: UPDATE #2 11/28/2017: I have been using a memory combo of 2gb + 8gb since I loaded up ESXi on the rig. For some reason, the 8gb will not be recognized anymore. Thinking it had gone bad (Mushkin, referenced below), I ordered an 8gb stick of Samsung. It's not recognized by the hardware either, so I am forced to run some old 2 channel 4gb sticks that I had laying around to get the box back up and running. Tested both 8gb sticks in another desktop and they work....am not sure why the box stopped recognizing the larger RAM?

UPDATE 01/22/2017: I have owned this unit now for about 4 years. I have upgraded to 4TB disks, and am running NAS4Free, WHS and Mint all-together via ESXi 6.1. All other specs remain the same. This box has run 24*7*365 with the only downtime being for hardware/software updates. Quite dependable and a solid performer. If I had to do it all over again with consideration to the current selling price of the unit, I'd build a little i3 server box and save a bunch of $$ that would run circles around this unit...but I have to give props to this one for the dependability.

Really nice touches are the screws and wrench inside the door. This is a really well built, solid rig and it replaced 3 old desktops running the referenced OS's. Kill-a-watt shows it's drawing just shy of 56w when all VM's are running and disks are being accessed. I consider that a good, economical trade to get the power bill down.

Cons: The MB and connections are pretty tight, but I don't expect to fiddle with them much anymore now that things are set up. Dual-nics and built in USB 3.0 would've been nice...but I can't complain considering the after-rebate price. As others have stated, the CD/DVD connections are a bit strange.

Overall Review: Have owned this rig for about 3 months now. Installed ESXi 5.1 on a 4Gb USB flash drive and ordered 1x8Gb stick of non-ECC memory (Mushkin 992017 from newegg) to pair with the included 1x2Gb stick of ECC....disables ECC, but running with no hiccups. Installed 2x1.5TB drives for my FreeNAS installation. Using the included 250Gb drive for all VM's. Running FreeNAS, XPPro, Ubuntu server, and Mint with ease. This was the perfect way to consolidate my "play" machines and my home NAS.

Great little box 2/2/2016 4:38:07 PM

Pros: Great little server so far have only owned for about a month. Running Server 2008 R2 hosting a small FTP server for personal use as well as a Web server. Quiet, so far reliable, no real issues so far.

Cons: Small drive that comes with it, honestly though for my uses its not bad. low on the ram side, an couple extra gbs would speed this up a little faster

Overall Review: All in all its a good box, the HDD and RAM are both upgradeable so it is not a big problem

poor customer service 7/29/2014 10:03:02 PM

Pros: decent design, fit many needs... almost.

Cons: HP now requires you to pay for firmware and other updates after product warranty expires (1 year) which is NOT clearly described with the original product warranty.

Overall Review: Since HP has chosen the route of extorting customers with products instead of putting customers needs first, I've decided to never purchase another HP product for the rest of my life. Congrats HP, you deserve to fail now.

Wonderful Experience 6/30/2014 8:10:04 AM

Pros: Quiet
Small
Runs cool (averages ~36C, maxes out ~57C)
Reliable
Awesome support from HP
Low power consumption
Relatively easy to work on

Cons: Processing power is a little lacking but that is expected with an AMD Turion II.
Had one issue early on with the motherboard where the server wasn't able to boot up at all (wouldn't post or anything). However HP support was very easy to deal with and they promptly shipped me out a replacement motherboard, free of charge, which resolved all of my problems.

Overall Review: Running with:
Windows Server Essentials 2012
Upgraded to 8GB of RAM (Kingston 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) ECC Unbuffered Server Memory Model KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G)
2x2TB WD Red drives
1x1TB WD Blue drive
1x500GB WD Blue drive (mounted in the optical drive space using KINGWIN HDM-229 Metal Mounting Kit)
1x250GB drive

Have this running as my home server that I use mainly for streaming content to a Roku 3 using Plex. Works great, but because it only has an AMD Turion, it struggles to transcode large 1080p content, but this is expected. Most of the content I watch isn't in 1080p and if it is, I can convert the media in advance to a format that doesn't need transcoding for the Roku. Bought this over building myself a new rig primarily because I wanted something that would use very little power and that would be "server" reliable, and that's exactly what this little box has been.

Other things I use it for as well:
- File sharing server (can access files from anywhere using Tonido)
- Mumble server
- Print server
- Crashplan backup destination
- Photo backup server using Bittorrent Sync
- Remotely manage it via Teamviewer

Little workhorse 3/25/2014 5:15:55 PM

Pros: Great little server. I currently have it as a WHS box providing backups, but only because I had an unused license. I would probably either roll it with FreeNAS or unRAID for backup purposes.

Cons: Doesn't come with more memory out of the box.

Overall Review: Love how it can run ESXi. The processor isn't all that beefy (i.e., no video transcoding), but for fileserver / devserver duties, this thing is awesome.

little vm home lab 3/3/2014 7:28:00 AM

Pros: Have two of these running a vmware home lab

low power
16gb mem

Cons: You now have to pay HP for firmware updates? I dont agree with this @ all.

For me, the path of least resistance will be dumping these boxes on *bay. Supermicro seems to have a few options that will fit my needs.

Overall Review: Just not a fan of HP’s Mary McCoy.

Very basic. 2/12/2014 3:12:19 PM

Pros: Nice looking and compact box. All in one solution if not interested building yourself. But then again if you are here already do your research and keep in mind what is it you trying to achieve.

Cons: For the price it is going for ($350) you can build yourself a much better Microserver which will outperform this set up 3X.

Overall Review: Only 16 gig memory support. Somewhat under powered processor. Bios did not recognize RAID card.
