DuoSwap MB971SPO-B

Tray-Less 3.5” SATA HDD Mobile Rack and Ultra-Slim 9.5mm ODD Bay for External 5.25” Bay

The ICY DOCK DuoSwap MB971SPO-B combines a 3.5” hot-swap drive bay with a 9.5mm ultra-slim ODD bay, all in a single external 5.25” bay. The tray-less design makes it hassle-free to install or remove 3.5” hard drives, simply slide in the bare 3.5” HDD and it’s connected. There’s no need to deal with screws, trays, or tools. Its quick-release drive ejection button makes swapping drives easier than ever, with a spring-loaded arm that pops the drive out. The power switch and LED status light give you full control over connecting your drive. The bottom bay lets you install any 9.5 height ultra-slim optical drive, making it easier to view and transfer your optical media storage such as CD, DVD, and Blu-ray medias. Both the 3.5” drive and ultra-slim ODD device are powered by a single 15-pin SATA power connector, reducing cable clutter and adding space efficiency to the system. Optionally, an additional ICY DOCK 2.5” HDD / SSD hot-swap kit can be added to the 3.5” drive bay or optical bay of the MB971SPO-B if access 2.5” (laptop) drives is required.

Due to system space limitation with these compact systems, you’re often made to choose between the features you need. With the DuoSwap, you don’t have to choose, you can install your 3.5” data drive, and optical drive / ODD device, all in a single 5.25” bay.

ICY DOCK

Hassle-Free ODD & 3.5” HDD Installation

ICY DOCK

To install an Ultra-Slim 9.5mm ODD device, simply insert it into the lower bay and secure the device with the included screws. To install the 3.5” HDD, simply insert the bare 3.5” SATA drive into the upper bay and press it in, there’s no need for trays, screws, or tools for 3.5” drive installation.

Safety Enhanced Drive Guiding Mechanism

ICY DOCK

Inserting a 3.5” drive is aided by the dual-action drive guiding mechanism & stabilizer. This ensures that the drive maintains a firm and stable connection to the internal SATA connector, and protects against damage if the system is bumped. When inserting a drive, this mechanism acts to guide the drive directly into the connector, ensuring that it is easily compatible with all 3.5” HDDs. Ejecting the 3.5” drive in the MB971SPO-B is as easy as pressing a button. Once pressed, the ejection arm will gently and safely pop out your drive.

Packed with Features

To monitor drive activity and know when your 3.5” drive is active, a LED status light is included. A solid blue light indicates the device has power, and an flashing blue light is shown when the drive is in use.

ICY DOCK

For your convenience, a power switch is included for the 3.5” HDD. This allows you to physically cut power to a drive, without having to fully remove it from the Duoswap. Excellent for drives containing sensitive data that is best kept as cold storage until needed.

ICY DOCK

The 3.5” bay has a spring-loaded dust cover that stays closed when a drive is not in use. Additionally, the ODD bay has a detachable dust cover that can be stored inside of the unit when the ODD bay is occupied and can be reinserted back as dust cover if the bay is empty. This keeps your system free of dust, and maintains the look of the front of your case when not using individual bays.

ICY DOCK

The DuoSwap MB971SPO-B supports both 7-pin SATA data and 15-pin SATA power cables with locking latches so you’ll never need to worry about cables unintentionally disconnecting from your enclosure. Once these cables are connected, they’ll lock into place and stay that way.

Optional 2.5” SSD / HDD Hot-Swap Kits

ICY DOCK

An optional ICY DOCK 2.5” SSD / HDD hot-swap kit can be added when access 2.5” SSD / HDD is required. The DuoSwap MB971SPO-B’s is compatible with ToughArmor MB411SPO-2B 2.5” HDD to ODD enclosure and EZConvert 2.5” to 3.5” drive converters. I wanted to like this 3/30/2019 5:53:46 PM

Pros: Solid construction, easy to install.

Cons: Intermittently failed to detect drives over 6TB, returned it and used Startech's version, which worked fine. I tried two of these, neither worked.

Overall Review: They need to revised this and make an updated version.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello,

I'm sorry you've had this problem with your product. This model uses a direct electrical pass-through connection type that simply forwards the connection, so failures of this kind are very rare. Because the size of the drive is not related to this type of failure, and because it only happens on certain drives, I would consider checking that drive for possible issues. This could be a connection issue, in which case I would ask that you confirm that all your cables are seated correctly and that none of the copper contacts are visible. If this is not the issue, I would check for problems with the health of the suspect drives. Bechmarking utilities that are likely available from your drives manufacturer should assist you in confirming this.

If, after testing these things, the problem is still not resolved, I would suggest contacting ICY DOCK directly. Their live US-based support technicians are on hand to assist you in this, and any other related issues you may have. They can be reached by email at tech@icydock.com, and will help you in troubleshooting and in creating an RMA, if that proves necessary.

Thank you,
Chris - ICY DOCK Customer Support

Junk. 3/19/2019 8:56:42 AM

Pros: Nothing.

Cons: The tiny, cheap arm that is supposed to guide the closure mechanism is faulty. I have to frig with it to get this thing to close, and that means reaching into the bay and manipulating the arm to close it, risking pinching my fingers every time. The amount of force I have to use to do that moves my entire rig, which is very heavy. I have to use nearly as much force to get drives to slide into the connectors. I will never buy another Icy Dock product again. It's absolute junk. How did this c*rap get through QC? Do they even have quality control? It's absolute trash.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Daniel,

I'm sorry you've had this issue with your product. This model does indeed get QC'd, and is designed to be a long-lasting part, so it's odd that you're having this issue so quickly. I can assure you that this is not the typical experience with an ICY DOCK enclosure, and I will do what I can to resolve this for you. I would consider checking the inside of the bay to verify that there are no external obstructions that could be causing this.

I would suggest contacting us directly for support. Your model, as with all ICY DOCK models, is backed by a full 3-year warranty against all defects, and we can repair or replace this model for you as per the warranty. We can be reached at tech@icydock.com, and have live US-based support agents ready to assist you. I look forward to hearing from you, and apologize again for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Thank you,

Does what I need it to. . . 11/24/2018 7:27:03 PM

Pros: Individual power and eject buttons for each drive.
Allows me to plug in an internal drive for maintenance or formatting.
Dual size form factors for max flexibility with the bay space that I have.

Cons: Eject buttons seem to take more force that I want to put on them. (Am I going to break them? Keep pushing and find out.)

Overall Review: If you have a mid-tower or full-tower, a good option. Probably better going with a disc drive in a mini-tower, and using an external enclosure or docking bay if you need it.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Brian,

Thank you for your review, and I'm sorry you've found the button presses to be difficult. Due to the open nature of this model, and the fact that it is installed on the front of computer cases, the clearances are left a little tight to ensure that drives do not fall out during ejection. This could damage drives and potentially lead to data loss. The security of our users data is our number 1 priority, and we made this design decision to reflect that. That being said, I will forward this to our design team and let them know you found the button press too heavy, this will help us design our products in the future.

If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact us at tech@icydock.com

Thank you again for your review,
Chris - ICY DOCK Customer Support.

frustrating waste of money 11/6/2018 2:49:34 PM

Pros: none to mention, though to be fair I did have a specific use in mind (SAS drives).

Cons: does not accept SAS drives, even though it's just a passthru. They use a connector that has a divider built in, the only reason it could possibly be like that is to prevent SAS drives. I don't believe there is a valid engineering reason for this.

NONE of the slim DVD drives i've tried will fit. Either the case doesn't slid into the slot, or if it does, the SATA connector is many mm. from connecting.

Other icydock stuff is similarly specified but works fine with SAS parts. was not expecting to get burnt over something this pointless. Apparently I've also got something to learn about the fine points of slim DVDs, even though the pile of them next to me have all nearly identical form factor. DEFINITELY would have appreciated if this stuff was mentioned clearly on the part description, I can't be the only person with SAS disks and normal slim DVD drives that icydock has run in to.

I'm hugely dismayed, shipping this back will cost half the purchase price, if newegg even bothers to play nice on the return/exchange.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello,

I'm sorry you've had this problem with your product, and I understand the frustration when a product doesn't meet your expectations. As is mentioned in both the Newegg and ICY DOCK product pages, this model supports only 3.5" SATA drives because, as you noted, the physical connectors are different.

Optical drives come in a few sizes. Older ones would use the full height of a 5.25" computer bay, though modern ones are categorized as slim (12.7mm height) or ultra-slim (9.5mm height). To reduce confusion between the two, we clearly label which of the two standards our products support. For this model, both the Newegg and ICY DOCK product pages clearly state support for ultra-slim 9.5mm optical drives.

You mentioned that some of this information was not clear on the page you viewed, can I ask which page you read did not contain this information? It sounds like you may have read an unofficial product page without complete information, and I would like to work to correct this issue so it never happens again. If you are able to find it, please email it to use at tech@icydock.com and I will see that it is corrected.

Great For Hassle-Free Backups 9/20/2018 6:34:07 PM

Pros: This is my third unit in as many years - not replacements, but simply adding additional units. I have two full tower setups in my home office - one for general computing and the other for video editing. Both systems employ large RAID mirrors and both systems have these bays to perform backups to external drives (I like them so much I added a second unit to one PC so that I could make quick transfers between external drives.)

The build quality is very good for the price point and the ejection mechanism is quite smooth

Cons: The clearances of the bay that accepts 3.5-inch drives is very tight and tends to bind when inserting or extracting drives because metal-to-metal surfaces. A design change that included nylon gliders to eliminate binding would be most welcome

Overall Review: Recommended and would buy again

Unstable 9/5/2018 7:02:17 AM

Pros: It seems to be made well.

Cons: System crashes.

Overall Review: I was going to use this to swap operating system drive out. Since I'm always playing with different operating systems. I bought a new system installed the drive bay and system crashed intermittently. Once I removed the drive bay from the the system the problem went away and is running very well.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Dave,

I'm sorry you've had this problem with your product. This model uses a direct electrical pass-through connection type that simply forwards the connection from the drive, so errors of this kind are very rarely associated with our product. Have you tested the drive thoroughly direct to your computer, without the ICY DOCK enclosure? This test could confirm if the issue is caused by the drive. If the issue is indeed with the drive, I would suggest contacting the drive manufacturer for support.

If the issue does show to be the ICY DOCK unit, it will be covered by our full 3-year warranty against all defects. Please contact us at tech@icydock.com and we will be glad to resolve this issue for you.

Good design, needs improvements to be great 1/20/2018 7:03:48 PM

Pros: - Quick drive removal (after removing covers)
- Independent power buttons

Cons: - Bay covers get caught on drives
- Drives take quite a bit of force to eject
- Wire insulation cracking

Overall Review: I tried several hot-swap caddies before I found this one; for my use case it is by far the best design. I use two of these bays several times a week to make images of customer hard drives before working on their PCs. If you will be using these caddies a lot, take the face off and remove the bay covers. Drives will get caught on them, making it hard to remove the drive. The 2.5" bay cover on one of my original caddies broke free from the mounting point on one side, which made it nearly impossible to remove the drive. While they don't look as good with the covers removed, it fixes my only major issue.

One of my original two units was DOA (no power), but Newegg replaced it without any hassles. The replacement unit had an issue with the insulation cracking and exposing the wires for the 2.5" bay, but it works so I didn't bother sending it back for another one. My original unit doesn't have this issue, so it might be an isolated problem.

Even with the various issues, I still think this is one of the best HDD caddies for people who swap drives a lot. Do yourself a favor and remove the bay covers, it makes a huge difference in the usability of these caddies.

Just what I was looking for 1/18/2018 10:04:08 PM

Pros: Does what it is suppose to do.
Powers drives just fine.
Windows 10 detects drives just fine.

Cons: The ejector arm will swing over a SSD if the SSD is too thin. This means you will not be able to eject the SSD and you will need to pull it out yourself. It would have been nice if the ejector arm was designed differently. I have a Samsung EVO which is so thin, the ejection arm just slides across the top of it without ejecting the drive. Buy thick SSD's to use with this. Knocking off one star because it will not eject all SSD's from the bay.
