Intel NUC BOXNUC7CJYH1 Barebone System
The BOXNUC7CJYH1 Next Unit of Computing comes with Intel Celeron J4005 (dual-core, dual-thread) processor for smooth video streaming, web browsing, SNS updates checking or engaging presentations creating. It's ideal for businesses, students, educators, and DIYers, while the integrated graphics offers great visuals. All essential connectivity options are included, such as two HDMI 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet port, Toslink jack, 802.11ac, Bluetooth, and the front consumer infrared port. Memory, storage and OS are not included, so you can customize and build a little powerhouse that fits your needs and budget.
Pros: Performance on Linux is great. CPU and GPU wise.
Cons: None that I can tell. This might be underpowered for some people but at $120 you can't complain.
Overall Review: I haven't tested Windows on this NUC. Although it seems only drivers for 10 are available. Also this can use legacy boot.
Pros:
Inexpensive (Just under $100 on sale)
Small
Pretty generic hardware - drivers are commonly available
Cons:
8G memory limit
EOL hardware
Can't boot from USB!?!?
Overall Review: Loads up Ubuntu 18.04 with no problem, booting from SD card. Could not find any way to boot from USB (jump drive, hard drive, nor CD). Picked this up for a lab server to test builds and software with and it works just fine. BIOS configuration is a bit of a mess, couldn't find decent documentation. Got it working though and am happy with my purchase. Server is running headless so I don't care about the graphics. Might pick up a second one to cluster with.
Pros: Is Reasonably fast on Windows 10, all it's functions work well. Intel support does a nice job on defective units-full replacement
Cons: Spent several hours trying to get it to install from flash drive and CD, always had a can't find media error. Took 3 tires with email on INtel tech support but got an RMA, cost me $10 to ship but they got it turned around in a week. Assume MB was bad as they replaced unit. Also had weird graphics during boot into BIOS that was a clue a problem existed.
Pros:
-I installed Xubuntu 18.04 and it works great for using as a living room light gaming PC but mainly for watching Youtube.
-Lightweight and compact. Uses up very little room on my entertainment stand.
-I installed a 250gb Sansdisk SSD and 8gb of Crucial memory
Cons: -Haven't had any major issues with it. Some small annoyances which I was able to solve, see below.
Overall Review:
-You'll need to go through the BIOS options to set it up. The PC boots so fast that if you need to get into the BIOS best to enable to option to ask you whether you want to boot your OS or go into the BIOS. Had such a hard time getting into the BIOS after my 1st time in there.
-You'll want to update the BIOS. This can be downloaded from Intel's website and put on a flash drive. Easiest to update through the BIOS.
-If you run the audio/video through a receiver, and aren't getting any sound, check your receiver settings. I plugged the HDMI cable into my SAT/CBL port and wasn't getting any sound. Lots forum searching and wasted time later, I was looking through my receiver manual and noticed that you can select what audio input you want for the port you're currently using. Switched my SAT/CBL port to use the optical port and bingo! I now have sound.
Pros:
Pocketable (sort of)
Runs windows 10
Sips on power, uses roughly 4W at idle and 16w max while gaming at 100% load
Cons: Installing a fresh copy of windows 10 required you to download the drivers from intel.
Overall Review: Great small desktop that uses so little power I can leave on!
Pros: Installed the G Skillz Ripjaw in the dual memory slots with Windows 10 Pro and an SSD. Works great for such a small package. Make sure to install the drivers from intel. Especially the graphics driver.
Cons: Memory can be a bit expensive since the DDR4 2400 is still kind of new which negates the price point of the NUC slightly..
Overall Review: Will purchase again for my clients. Hopefully RAM prices will drop soon.
Pros:
- I purchased this mainly for its ability to output HDMI 2.0 for 4K at 60Hz
- Cheapest PC with HDMI 2.0 I could find
- Small and pretty quite with its tiny fan
- With hardware video decoder, it uses less than 25% CPU playing 4K video
Cons:
- Very slow for general purpose use, but I give it 5 stars because it is not suppose to be fast at this price point
- SATA and its power cable are too short making it hard to install hard drive without disconnecting the cables
Overall Review: - This only uses the new DDR4/PC4 RAM which is still very expensive, 8GB would cost you over half of this unit's price!

Pros: Low energy
Linux Compatible
Good speed for many apps
Using 16GB memory while specs say this machine can't
Cons: for the money and the goals I have for this nuc... no cons
Overall Review: I purchased another NUC model before this one and I had to return it. However, in this case, this one is working very well. It took me some time to install Linux Mint 18.3 XFCE edition and so far this machine is performing quite well. I can inclusive watch TV with my old USB TV tunner (but I had to set the video card shared memory to max settings). If you need a cheap PC to use for normal tasks like web browsing, git repo, samba share, basic http server, etc then this is your answer.
Note: I just notice I can not use Bluetooth or Wifi within Linux Mint 18. This is not a problem for me at present but I hope Intel or the Linux community will provide their respective drivers.
ADD INFO: I just installed the latest version of Lubuntu (18.04) and I got Bluetooth Wifi, and this little box is running pretty well for its goals: git repo, metv, web browing, etc etc
Update: I installed the next memory on this nuc:
https://www.newegg.com/crucial-16gb-260-pin-ddr4-so-dimm/p/1X5-001S-002N6?Item=9SIADRH9DB3729
and my nuc recognizes it with no problems. Even Intel specs says thie nuc is Max 8gb. But this memory is working quite well giving 16gb to my nuc.
