Question 1

I have a Z170X-Gaming 7 motherboard, it has a LGA 1151 socket is that the same as Socket LGA 1151 (300 Series) ? I am not sure what the 300 series 1151 is, I guess a newer socket version which is not listed on my z170x-gaming 7 mobo as being supported. Will this CPU be supported on my mobo with LGA 1151?

No -the LGA 1151 socket is indeed the same, but the i7 8700k and the i7 8086k (they are essentially the same processor), will not work on Z170 or Z270 boards.  You need either a Z370 board, or one of the new Z390 boards.

Which is better 8700k vs 8086k?

8086K is a cherry picked batch of 8700K.. should be "better" but for people not interested in overclocking should be the same thing.  I suppose the "max turbo" limit on the 8086K is better and can be an advantage even if not overclocking.

Question 3

Will the 8086K require water cooling to run at 5GHz without thermal throttling?

Yeah, I have ran mine upwards of 5.3 with just a AIO across all cores, but saw spikes, keeping it at 5-5.1 you should see very few spikes above 80.  at 5.0 across all cores should see 60s in a average AIO set up.

processors have little bearing on VR compatibility. Mostly that is handled by the processor. There may be a minimum clock speed for VR compatibility, but that’s likely in the 2.5 to 3 GHz range, and would be about the same as most VR-compatible games. This is one of Intel’s fastest processors, so it would meet the minimum requirements of just about any game so long as it’s matched with the appropriate GPU and memory.

TL;DR yes, but procs aren’t the part to worry about for that.

Is the 8086k compatible with a z390 motherboards?

As the 8086k is an 8th gen Intel CPU, it would depend on the motherboard. I will say that almost all z390 boards do offer 8th as well as 9th generation compatability.

with this Intel processor can i still use ddr4 288-pin 2400 mhz? im asking because in the Specification it says ddr4-2666.

Yes you can. I have a board that didn't like my adata 3000 ram so I used some DDR4 2400 that was pulled from a system to upgrade. Works fine. Another board I can use DDR4 3000, 3200. Check your motherboard memory specs, and use windows 10

can MSI Z170A XPOWER GAMING TITANIUM EDITION utilize this CPU? I found a compatibility chart that says yes, but find it hard to believe.

Nope.  This processor needs a Z370 motherboard.  It will also work on the upcoming Z390 boards which come out next month.

Just out of curiosity, is it worth to replace 8700K with this one ?

Overall? No. The 8700K is basically the same CPU only with lower default clock speeds. My main components are 7+ years old and I was finally due for an upgrade. So this was time to run with it for me. For the 8700K it is plenty fast and can be overclocked to match it. I wanted the 8086K as I have been looking to upgrade and I enjoyed the '40th Anniversary of x86' milestone.
