Don't waste your money

Pros: none

Cons: i never write reviews but this was the worst chip i have ever used it died on me less than a month after i bought it no warning or signs of failure just died mid game. When it did work it lagged over the simplest of loads. it's just not good in any way.

nice CPU

Pros: - Clocks easily to 5GHz+ on good AIO cooling
- great gaming performance
- not too hard on the VRMs on a decent X299 board

Cons: - overpriced; an 8700K costs a little more and it is really a much better chip
- platform cost is much higher than z370
- quad core might not have a ton of staying power

DO NOT BUY THIS PROCESSOR. ITS GARBAGE - please read

Pros: Not a one

Cons: -Only 16 pci-e lanes = bad
-No quad channel ram support = bad
-No 16x sli support = bad
-Way overpriced

Intel totally messed this one up big time. This CPU is nothing more than a high end i5. You cannot due quad channel memory config. You cannot do 16x sli. Which is why anyone would even consider moving to this socket. This CPU is a total waste of money. To get a 2066 socket CPU that can do what my i7-3820 (which had 40 pci-e lanes) and was cheaper than this crummy processor, you have to spend over $1000. Once again, "GOOD JOB INTEL". The fact that they even created this CPU knowing all of its limitations was obviously on purpose and very greedy. I really hope they read this review and all the other reviews about this entire line of CPUs.

Overall Review: If you were considering buying this processor, "DON'T". If you read my cons you will understand. If you are considering building/upgrading your gaming system, give AMD a shot. Their Ryzen 7 line is pretty sweet for gaming.

Great CPU

Pros: I got my 7740x along with the aorus gaming 3 mobo off new egg for $480 or something close to that. Was initially going for a 7700k as I was building this pc strictly for gaming. When I saw how got the 7700k was running I figured I would take a chance with the 7740x instead. All togeher after I bought my ram I didn't spend more than around 40-80$ more than I would have if I stuck with the z270 and 7700k (depending on the motherboard.) So for me that small price difference between the 7700k setup and the 7740x was well worth it.

Yes your loosing some of the features on the x299 motherboard, but when you compare it to the z270 and 7700k you arnt "loosing" Anything.

My option is this, if you can buy the 7740x with an x299 motherboard for very close to the same price as a 7700k and a z270 mobo then do it. It's well worth it.

My CPU doesn't come close to the temps ppl are hitting with the 7700k. This CPU is the PERFECT gaming CPU, mainly because of its single core performance and it having the highest stock frequency of any other cpu. Which also means you can overclock it farther in most cases.

Cons: My first CPU that I got from Newegg started to blue screen on me. I had to either up the voltage to over 1.3vcore at stock frequency OR I had to lower the frequency BELOW stock just to keep it from blue screening.

After a TON of trial and error and testing I finally narrowed it down to the CPU, I contacted Intel customer support as it was now over the 30day Newegg warentee. Intel claim was insanely simple and easy to do, I had my new CPU 2 days later and sent my old one back to get re-embersed.

My second CPU had ZERO ISSUES so I must have just gotten unlucky.

Sadly, because my first CPU was bunk I have to take 1 egg away otherwise it would have been 5 eggs!

Overall Review: I currently have my 7740x overclocked to 5.2ghz, at 1.38v vcore. My "M.E.S.H" is at 5ghz and my LLC is set to extreme. My ram is corsair vengiance RGB 3000mhz and I have my XMP profile on, I was able to overclock my ram from 3000mhz to 3200mhz. Everything else is left stock other than a slight PCH or (chipset) voltage increase.

My chip at these settings idles at 17-20c and during gaming It is usually between 45-65c core 2 likes to somtimes hit a peak high of 70c during gaming but that's only for a microsecond. Otherwise my CPU package 90% of the time is under 65c..

Stress testing and benchmarking my temp hit between 68-80c. I use Intel burn test which is very hard on the CPU and really warms it up.

All of these temps I just listed were with a room temp of around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Some stess testing info

Pros: New, recent build.
Fast and durable thus far. Testing didn't break it. Too new to say much else.
See web for comparisons with 7700k or other x299 cpus. Not my forte. This review is just to report some stress testing.

Cons: Nothing to report at moment

Overall Review: Gigabyte x299 board. (Aorus gaming 3) i7-7740x. Mild 4.7 ghz overclock. (Stock voltages.) Rosewill Blackhawk case. (Big airy mid-tower with four case fans. Side case fan didn't clear the cooler.) BeQuiet Shadow Rock Slim CPU cooler (135mm single tower). Constant 75 degree F ambient temp.

Overnight stress test with Intel Extreme Tuning (gentler and more realistic than Prime 95). Max CPU package and core temps 70 C with 65 C max more common. 85 watts max package power draw at 100% cpu utilization at 4.7 ghz. No throttling. Works for me.

Prime95's most brutal test pushed package and some cores to 100 C at which point the CPU protection throttled speed but did not shut it down. Draw was a full 135 watts. Yikes! I only ran 10 mins to be sure nothing would break. It is interesting that a 112 watt TDP cpu would actually draw and handle 135 watts albeit at 100C. Comforting that it throttled rather than shut down at exactly 100 C. Should be of comfort to more aggressive overclockers I suspect. (I'm not one.) Of course such folks are far better off with double tower or water than the beQuiet single tower cooler I used, but it's interesting that even with this cooler and a mild overclock to 4.7 that temps were perfectly fine for a long life. Even better in real world.

Haters gonna hate

Pros: With Newegg deal @$499 w/gaming-3 motherboard the price is competitive with 7700k. Fastest desktop processor you can buy with strong overclocking capability. Supports faster memory than 7700k. In my experience so far it runs quite cool with corsair h100i clc. I am upgrading from a laptop with an older i7 and the performance difference is an order of magnitude better.

Cons: Limited mother board options, some options are quite pricey. Only 2 instead of 4 memory channels. Negative reviews will scare some people away.

Overall Review: I would recommend this to anyone upgrading from an older processor that is looking at the i7-7700k. If you are trying to build a high end gaming or work machine at a reasonable price this is a good chip. No on board graphics which is fine, since at this product category you should buy a discrete gpu which will complement the chip well.
