Exactly What I Thought it Would Be 10/1/2019 7:30:17 PM

Pros: I chose this because I wanted to have a recent processor with a clock speed >3 GHz and at least quad core. Then it became a matter of practicality, do I want fastest dual channel memory and limited pci lanes, or this puppy that has quad channel memory at a decent speed and 40 pci lanes? This wins out.

It is fast enough to handle whatever I've thrown at it, good for multi-use multi-purpose workstation, photoshop, 3d/video editing encoding, decoding, compressing and decompressing, gaming, all while listening to music or watching youtube... pretty much anything that is multi threaded this thing will eat up.

It stays very cool under load but I've got a 280mm all in one so that helps.

It isn't a crazy high clock speed and it's only four cores with hyperthreading, but this means temps and wattage is relatively low.

Cons: Can't think of any!

Overall Review: Unfortunately, X99 boards are becoming a rarity, so if you buy this processor, be prepared to fork over some serious cash for the appropriate motherboard slot!

works in ASUS X99 board 8/22/2018 11:50:56 AM

Pros: works as expected
more efficient that we thought, no thermal issues

Cons: running at 3.18GHz with AI OC tool, was hoping for more with water cooling

Super Workstation Proc 3/1/2018 9:46:31 AM

Pros: Great for my workstation where I have tons of things running at once. I have this together with 32gb of DDR4 ram, an ASROCK X99 Tai Chi mobo, and a Samsung NVMe 950 pro ssd and it handles everything I throw at it. Been about a year so far with this setup.

Cons: Base speed is 2ghz but not really an issue since it boosts up to 3.2. There really isn't anything I can think of.

Overall Review: I typically am testing at least a few server/client virtual machines at once in a simulated network with accompanying virtual network appliances along with other daily duties without any kind of slowdown in any area. All this spread across 3 monitors with one being an almost 4k ultrawide via a GXT1050. This is what I need and what works for me so if you are looking to run similar workloads, I can vouch for this Xeon and overall setup.

Chugs right along 12/21/2017 7:17:31 PM

Pros: 8 cores/16 threads/20MB L3 cache.
Only 85W.
Quad memory interleaving.

Cons: Scary to put in with all of those little pins on the socket.
2.1GHz is not that fast.

Overall Review: It is the tortoise and the hare. I replaced an i7-2600K @ 3.4GHz with this thing, and at first I was a little disappointed, but after a while I noticed that no load seems to affect it. My i7 would run circles around the Xeon until it got a heavy load and then it would just choke on it. I highly recommend this CPU for a server class build. And it is the least expensive of the E5 V4 Xeons with 8 cores.

Good bang for the buck 10/24/2017 6:16:25 PM

Pros: Its Intel...
Nice themed box
8 cores of power for the dollar
Not just for servers.. Can install in socket 2011-3 X99 chipset

Cons: No cons.

Overall Review: I have had the best of luck with Intel chips. Ranging from Mobile CPU's on Laptops, Quad and dual core consumer Desktop, and Hexacore and Octa core CPU's . Just make sure to check your motherboard manufacturer CPU support list. Shipping was on time as always. Very satisfied and this CPU can take anything workload I throw at it.

Excellent chip for homeserver and light vm loads. 8/2/2017 3:52:07 AM

Pros: - Low TDP, using the 2011-3 socket cooler for Intel Core I7's (Intel BXTS13A) this chip does not exceed 20 degrees celsius under load in the 15 degree ambient temp that I took that measurement in. Happy for the server to live in the garage in summer temps.

- Low power Usage

- Handles all of the work I throw at it (family member computer backups, Sandstorm server, Plex server, WSUS server, and 5 Hyper-V Linux VM's).

Cons: Could always do with more clock speed and threads, but you get what you pay for.

Overall Review: Excellent choice for home server use. More power than the majority of affordable QNAP and Synology NAS's, with no OS lock-in.
