Sorry, I'm not tech savy at all!!  Is this the piece that hold the information or is this the reader to adapt the Micro SD card to a computer USB?

This is only the usb adapter.  Mine is my favorite adapter every and you can keep a Micro SD card inside it of any size you wish to use it as a USB pen drive.  You must buy the Micro SD card separate though.

What is Kingston reader for?

It allows you to use a Micro SD Card, that is generally used in Cell Phones and other devices such as a Go Pro camera, and manage the data on the storage device from a USB drive.
Rather than having to locate a Media Card Reader slot on some computers that have them or plugging in a bulky Multi Media Card Reader on some that do not,  you have the option of using a USB port that today  virtually all computers have today.

Question 3

Does the host device recognize this as flash drive, or specifically as a card-reader? Would I be able to boot an operating system from it (as if it were a flash drive)?

With a micro SD card installed, this device looks like a flash drive. I haven't tried to make a bootable drive, but my previou experience has indicated that it depends most strongly upon whether the micro SD card is capable of being made bootable. The only trouble I ever had was with some cheap CF disks that would not boot.
I have had other versions of this sort sort of micro SD card reader that burned up after only a couple of uses. This device has been very dependable.
