is this device used to upload software programs from a cd/dvd to a computer?

It functions just like your regular CD drive on a desktop computer. You can insert a DVD or CD and access the contents on it (if it's a music CD, you can play the song. If it's a DVD with a movie on it, you can play the movie, etc). It also allows you to burn CDs and DVDs.

It's essentially no different from the stock CD/DVD drive that comes with desktop computers if you were to buy one.

Question 2

Does anybody know if this unit has any known issues with Windows 8? I returned a "Jungle" Basics External DVD unit because it stopped working with my Hp Envy X2 convertible PC. Also, I can only connect to one USB port at a time because they sit on opposite sides of the keyboard. Will I need to connect to both ports for any reason? Thanks guys.

Drive seems to require both ports.. it needs the current. If both ports are 500 mA, you could get around the ports-on-opposite-sides-of-the keyboard problem by using a USB extension cable or if the drive is more or less always on your desk, by using an external *powered* USB hub. If you are not using a powered hub, I would not attempt to connect another high current USB device, such as a backup hard drive (a mouse should be OK though). Cannot address Windows as I use this drive with iMac.

Is this Windows 7 compatible?

Yes, I have used this drive with Windows XP Professional, Windows 7 Starter (32-bit) and Windows 7 64-bit.  The device installed instantly with no user intervention and worked flawlessly for both burning and reading. I am using DVD+R and DVD-R media. The device is very quiet. A high-quality, noise-suppressed and fairly beefy (though not excessively long) cable was supplied with mine and should probably be used for best performance.

Will this device play a DVD like an internal DVD drive will?

I don't normally play DVDs on my computers but in order to answer your question, I tried it on XP, Vista and Win7 computers and was able to play on all of them.

This is also a CDRW as are virtually all DVD burners.  While I usually use this drive on Windows7, I just burned a 66 minutes of audio disk at 24X in about 5.5 minutes.  Be sure to hang on to the heavy-duty mini-USB cable.  The plastic surround of some other cables won't fit into the cable cable opening (it's a great cable anyway with a RF supressor).  I'm happy with this very compact drive.

It's powered through the USB, so no need for an external power source. That was actually part of my reason for choosing this unit.

Is this drive compatible with an iMac running OS 10.6?

I am running 10.9 mavericks now and the cd drive works great. It also worked with mountain lion but I'm not sure on snow leopard.  Also You only need to use 1 USB port with this CD-ROM drive. The other USB connector I guess will give u a boost on cd writes.

I see that it has the double-headed USB 2.0 cable - yet one of the reviewers said it only required one USB port. Is it possible that for some purposes it needs 2 and some it only needs 1 - or does it truly always need 2?

I'm not real knowledgeable on this stuff.  Is this what I need to download a a software disk onto my netbook...like games, etc?

This is an external DVD reader and writer which uses ordinary DVD disks for storage.  You insert and remove them the same way you use your DVD player for your TV. It connects to your netbook using a USB cable which is supplied with the drive.  USB is a common connector type.  If you have a game on a disk, you can insert it into this drive and you will be able to play the game on your netbook.   This device is also a DVD writer, so you can buy blank DVD disks and write data to them, including anything you download from the internet.
