Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g
- IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g
The Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect Wireless-G, Wireless-B, and other performance-enhanced SpeedBooster devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

Pros: Somebody once said 'reviews are subjective'. Yes they are. Simply because it works for you doesn't mean it will work for all. For me, it has been working since the day (May 3, 2006)that I set it up. I haven't had any drop in signal at all. I took my laptop outside the house, walked down the street, pass three houses before the speed dropped from 54mbp to 52mbp. I forgot to mention that right next to the router is a cordless phone. I haven't had to move it. So buy this router..
Cons: Rebate took too long. I like instant rebate.
Pros: It can be made usable with 3rd party firmware.
Cons: Okay here is where it gets interesting. This device in my case (and some others that I have read about) are only able to correctly operate when the setup CD is used. I can understand using the disc for individuals who are unfamiliar with the hardware. I however am not and the 1st time I forwent this process and configured it via the web browser. The device work well for about 24hrs. After that period the device became unresponsive. Finally after repeated attempts w/o the CD I gave in and used it. {The Interesting Part} During installation of the Linksys Easylink Advisor software I received repeated attempts by this software to access 'linksysfixdotcom'. OKay, this website states that its purpose is ' a first-time setup application that automates the setup of your Linksys router'. So I guess my CD cannot take care of this? I would believe this if it wasn't for the following. 1) linksysfixdotcom is NOT registered to Linksys nor CISCO it is registered to Microsoft. *See below
Overall Review: 2) The software also attempts to contact 63.123.33.74. 63.123.33.74 is registered to MCI Communications Services, Inc. d/b/a Verizon Business. I might be able to understand this if they where my ISP..... This is highly suspicious behavior for software when it is being configured for network security, IMHO. It will be interesting to see what study of packet data will conclude when I allow this operation, know what I mean! Linksys/Cisco, anything?
Pros: Reliable, easy setup, and can use open source firmware to really enhance the router.
Cons: CISCO has significantly reduced the amount of memory in the newer versions of these routers.
Overall Review: Have had excellent service from an older (V1) version of this router. Just bought a new one (V7) to use as an inexpensive wireless adapter for an XBOX 360 (via dd-wrt firmware with wireless set to client mode). Newer versions of this router have only 2MB of flash memory so only the micro version of dd-wrt firmware can be used.
Pros: Got this on sale for half the cost of the Microsoft XBOX 360 wireless adapter. Using http://www.dd-wrt.com firmware, I flashed this unit (v7 is what I got) and configured it to be a bridge for my xbox360. Check the dd-wrt forums for step-by-step instructions - I followed them and was online with my Xbox in under 20 minutes.
Cons: None so far!
Overall Review: I already have a firewall and an existing wireless network, so this unit was used only to connect my xbox to the wireless network, for half the price Microsoft charges for their wireless adapter. If you want to use it the same way, you will have no problems as long as you follow the directions for the dd-wrt firmware. Beware - if you do it wrong, or use the wrong version, you can brick the unit.
Pros: This router is very easy to setup. You can have it working in a matter of minutes. Security is also very easy to setup for your wireless network.
Cons: After Cisco bought Linksys, they made the whole WRT line worse. They cut memory and changed the OS. Version 5 and 6(what I got) are notorious for losing connection while doing P2P. They are not easy to put 3rd party firmware on either. Linksys knows about the problem but their new firmware release did not fix the problem.
Overall Review: Only get this router if you will be doing simple tasks. Get the "WRT54GL" if you want to put any kind of 3rd party firmware on the router.
Pros: Works as advertised. I work from home and have had zero problems to date. Super easy to install.
Cons: Software for installation would allow me to set a 10 character password, but when I tried to access via http://192.168.1.1 it would not recognize the password I just set. Advice to others is to by pass the cd in the box and use the url above to access the config page yourself. If you used the cd and can't get in, then reset the router by holding in the reset pin on the back for 20-30 seconds.
Overall Review: Make sure to enable security for Wireless encryption WEP at minimum; WPA preferred. That way your neighbors can't surf on your dime. Also, you can be even more paranoid by only allowing certain MAC addresses as well as the WPA. Google if you want more on WPA.
Pros: It was very easy to set up and the LINKSYS OS is not too bad. The signal strength is OK for small or medium houses, but I have a large older house with thicker walls. The router I got was v7.2 which was hackable with the DD-WRT firmware so I could increase the TX output, but even pushing it up to 100 or 150 I still could not get a good signal in the basement or my master bedroom (4 walls deep into the house). I am now selling the router for $40 on CraigsList and I went to Circuit City and bought the DIR-655 (draft-N) from DLink and have not been happier.
Cons: Not the strongest signal in a large house or one with many walls or old construction. I would use this as a repeater or another ad-hoc AP. If you want faster and better go with N.

Pros: Great signal, great design, fits well with my other Linksys items. Firmware updates are simple and efficient. Tech support rocks. After all the configuration, I've had no problems whatsoever.
Cons: Had problems with the initial set up - CD app wouldn't recognize that I had a LAN card installed. Don't know what that was about, but was able to hardwire into the router and set it up easily from there. Had some connectivity problems with my Wii and my friends' laptops, but those could be their own problmes as well, and all were overcome with a bit of playing with the wireless security and MAC filtering.
Overall Review: When the CD app wouldn't work for me, I called Linksys tech support. They're AWESOME! They had me up and running in no time. Plus the guy was fun to talk to. I have both a wired and wireless router now, and they're cascading with each other; and it was all simple to set up. My experience has been great, and if it weren't for the initial "Easy Setup" CD not setting up, I would have given this 5 out of 5 stars.
