WD36GB RAPTOR vs MAXTOR 6L250SO12/15/2005 8:40:18 AM
Pros: I HAVE 2 X RAID0 WD36GB 10K RAPTORS AND JUST BOUTGHT 2 X RAID0 MAXTOR 6L250SO. BOTH ARRAYS WERE FILLED ABOUT 30% EACH AND DEFRAGMENTED TO 100% BEFORE TESTING WITH SISOFT SANDRA 2005.
TEST RESULTS:
2 WD36GB10K RAPTOR RAID0: 105MB/S
2 MAXTORS 6L250SO RAID0: 99MB/S
Cons: NONE. DRIVES ARE QUIET.
Overall Review: WELL, YOU CAN SEE THE TEST RESULTS. I HOPE WILL BE HANDY TO SOMEONE.

Overall Review: I downloaded the drive manual from Maxtor and it displays a 3 pin jumper layout and says not to screw with it. The actual drive has a 4 pin configuration. My ASUS P4P8X/XPMCE did not recognize the drive after installation. I had to remove the factory installed jumper, before it was recognized. When you see New Hardware Detected, right click My Computer then Manage then Disk Management. An XP wizard will pop up and initialize the drive. Next right click and format the drive. Done
Pros: I have bought a lot of Maxtor drives and usually had no problems with them. I use them in RAID arays a lot and they are fast and quiet. This was the first time I ran into this problem with the jumpers.
Cons: I thought this drive was defective at first. It would not spin up at all, appeared to be DOA and I was going to ask for an RMA. That means I have to pay to ship it back though. So just to make sure I tried removing the jumper and it spun up Ok. I am still running tests on it just to make sure. Rather than completly removeing the jumper switch it over to the other 2 pins. Probably where it should have been to begin with.
Overall Review: Hope this doesn't cause Maxtor a lot trouble and cost. They should jump on it right away and at least issue a notice to change the jumpers to the correct position.
Pros: NCQ, SATA, 16MB Cache.
Cheap - about 3.33Gb per $1.
Cons: Does not ship with cables.
Overall Review: I set up two of these bad boys in a RAID 0 arrary (explanation: stripped to act as a single drive to double the overall speed). I used to have the same system running on a single Parallel ATA drive. I'm not kidding, my systems overall speed literally QUADRUPLED when I installed these two drives with no other upgrades. The Professional version of Microsoft Office installed in 90 seconds (as compared to 10 minutes with the single ATA drive). SATA and 16MB Cache, along with NCQ if you use a RAID array, will drastically alter your system for the better.
Cons: LOUD. I did my first reboot after putting some data on the drive, it's pretty distracting. Problem doesn't seem to persist after booting though.
Overall Review: This is my first SATA drive, I've got to say it was alot easier to plug in compaired to an IDE. No more futzing around looking for pin 1 and twisting the ribbon around.
