Can this be used on a mac and a windows pc?

Most WD externals come partitioned as MBR (master boot record) and formatted as either NTFS or FAT32. A Mac with OS X can read and write FAT32 natively and READ (only) NTFS, with extra 3rd party software, they can also write NTFS. Windows can not read or write the typical Mac format of HFS+, but can with 3rd party software. So with the drive formatted as FAT32, you should be good to go! FYI - if you intend to use Apple's Time Machine for backing up the Mac, then it is STRONGLY recommended that you dedicate the drive exclusively to the Mac AND only for Time Machine, the entire drive and just one partition. (yes, doing otherwise may well work for you, but I've had to recover enough Time Machine "combo" drives to dedicate an entire device to Time Machine) ... Y.M.M.V.
