We regret to hear that your WD My Passport Portable External hard drive is not getting detected on your computer and thank you for bringing this concern to our attention. We suggest you to try the different USB port of the computer, different USB cable and connecting the hard drive with different computer on USB 3.0 port directly to isolate the issue with the device.

If the drive shows up in different computer, it is recommended to run the complete drive test on the drive using WD Drive Utilities when the device does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. You can refer the link given below and follow the instructions to run the test using WD Drive Utilities.

It took one massive backup!

Pros: Solid, I shoot 4k video and 20mbt pictures. It did not slow down. Thank goodness.

Cons: It can go faster if I had 3.0, but I don’t.

Good Portable Drive

Pros: Works well, good amount of space. Case has a unique look and is sturdy.

Cons: WD sales usually aren't as good as sales on Seagate portable drives. You can often buy Seagate cheaper on sale in store than you can buy WD on sale at Newegg.

Overall Review: I own both Seagate and WD portables. Both brands are good quality, so buy whichever is cheaper on a good sale. Portable drives are a commodity.

Slow but portable

Pros: -Works very well as a backup drive
-Size makes for great portability

Cons: -S L O W and often unresponsive
-Uses horribly fragile USB 3.0 Micro B connector
-Doesn't seem to take hot-plugging too well despite being a USB drive

Poor or slow performance is usually caused by system configuration issues. It is very rare that the performance issue is directly related to the hard drive. To ensure that the computer system is configured for optimal performance. Please know that the total amount of data on a disk and the relative size of each file can result in slow data transfer speeds.

Please know, computers with small amounts of memory may not have enough resources available to process data faster resulting in slow data backups. Stopping applications and software that use CPU and memory can improve backup performance. Connecting to a 2.0 or faulty USB port as well as using a faulty or low-quality USB cable can result in slow data transfer rates.
