I'm looking at this vs the founders edition for a small form factor case (ncase m1).  This is cheaper and has higher clock speed so it seems like an easy choice.  Is there any advantage of the founder's that I'm missing?  How does the cooler in this compare to the founders?

There is legitimately no difference between the cards, other than the Founder's Edition looks a little nicer and isn't made with a plastic shroud. Thermals are likely going to be the same but out of box performance is likely going to favor the MSI card. I'd recommend waiting, however, as this card's MSRP is lower than $659.

does this have a backplate?

It does not have a backplate. If you're concerned for looks, buy an aftermarket, or get another card. If you're worried about cooling, I've never had a problem. The stock cooler is good enough, and the graphics power to heat ratio on this card is unreal.

is this a reference card?

Yes it is.  I own this card personally, and know for sure that it is a Reference Card.  I am also pretty confident that cards that look like this (an enclosed blower) are all reference cards.  There may be a few exceptions I may not know about though.

Does it get really hot?

Absolutely.  I have a ton of fans in my Ultra-sized case, an air-conditioned house, and I still need a portable A/C unit in my office for most of the year to keep this thing running at optimum when I'm rendering.  Admittedly I'm also using it heavily for a purpose it wasn't originally intended for, because I could burn out several of these one after the other for the price of one Quadro, but if you game for hours a day be prepared to have some additional cooling.  The on-board fan is NOT enough.

does msi honor its warranty if i want to put a waterblock on it?

I am almost certain that they wont.  The warranty void sticker is on one of the GPU block screws.  Voided Warranty.

i have a 6 pin connector does it come with an adapter or do i need to buy one?

Are you certain your PSU is compatible with this card? There is no adapter that I am aware of. I had no issues with my card, it was plug and play for me... slap it into the PCIe 3.0 slot on your motherboard, attach the 8pin(I think) connector from the PSU and I was good to go. There's only one way to plug these parts in so if it don't fit don't force it, good rule of thumb there.

my current video card has a 16 pin molex for power into my video card. The 1080 requires only an 8 pin molex  connector. Anybody know a good part number or where i can get one?

There is no such thing as a "16 pin molex" - perhaps you have a card that has 2 each PCI-E 8-pin power connectors (which most cards put right next to each other so that they can be mistaken for one bigger single connector).

Does this come with an adapter to convert 2, 4 pin into an 8 pin connector or do I have to grab me another power supply?

I don't believe it came with the adaptors, but you can purchase 4 pin to 8 pin molex adaptors separately rather than buying a new PSU.

Question 10

How come the Core/Boost clicks differ so much between cards? Are they not the same hardware and we can reach the same clock speeds no matter what they put on the product page?

Why does Effective Memory Clock show 5005 on MSI version and 10000 on all other 1080 cards? Typo?

I have this MSI Aero OC card and confirm that is a typo, also the MSI site has the correct memory effective clock of 10010 Mhz ( a very slight overclock on the memory)
