How does this VGA card perform under heavy load?

It performs exactly like every other 5090 under load. There is only a small margin of difference between overclocked cards and reference cards. It's a few frames in games at most. Plus, you can generally overclock most cards to be in line with most factory overclocks. Their clocks aren't that hard to match in most cases.

Can the card be usable with a 1000 watt psu?

The card's TDP is 575W, so you should be fine.

Is there any indication provided to ensure the cables are properly inserted?

Not specifically. All the 12 pin cables I've seen have a yellow or other bright color on the connector edge. When plugging the power cable into the video card you shouldn't be able to see that color once its fully inserted. If you can, the cable isn't inserted all the way.

Will this VGA card fit in a smaller, more space-constrained computer case?

I doubt it. 5090's aren't exactly small.
