Do you need a router with this product to have wireless system? In addition, I use Cox as my internet provider will it work with their system?

1. This is a router.

2. Any internet provider should work, so long as you already have a modem set up with that provider, which provides an ethernet cable output for internet connectivity. if you have internet working and the modem connected to your current computer, you would just connect the ethernet cable to the router instead of the computer, then restart modem and restart router, and then you should be good to go. do not forget to change default Netgear router settings (see included instructions).

Do I need a modem also to get wireless ?

This Netgear router only provides the WiFi signal in your home, as well as Ethernet ports into which you can connect other network devices, such as network drives, printers, etc.  So, yes, you also need a modem to connect to the internet.   The Netgear router plugs into the modem, thereby providing the internet signal via WiFi in your home.  Please be advised, however, that most Internet service providers (e.g., cable company or telephone company) these days provide you with a device that is a modem as well as a WiFi router in one unit when you sign up for service, so you may not need this Netgear router at all, unless you want the extra capabilities of this Netgear router, like I did (dual band, USB port, etc.)

What model is WNDRMAC? i.e is it WNDR3700 or WNDR3800?

Can I install dd-wrt on it?

the model's you have stated are not going to willing except a firmware update with dd-wrt , you run the risk of bricking your router and having a beautiful paper weight on your hands, you could try but will most likely fail and even if the flash is successful you may still have problems with other features or a host of other things, if you want to install aftermarket  firmware on a router I would suggest you find a router with a open source firmware, plus dd-wrt's database doesn't contain a firmware for this model.

is this multicast compatible?  my new actiontec router does not work with my wireless hp printer / bonjour

I don't have hp printer, I have a canon printer, the router is working very fine, sometime it losts  one bar, for the price I will give 5 star.

Question 6

Does this router support VPN passthrough and/or QoS?

This router can be flashed with openwrt or gargoyle, both of which support VPN passthrough and have excellent QOS.

Not sure about the factory firmware.
