Pros: FAST
FAST
FAST
and did I mention how FAST it is?
Cons: Only 8 ports
Overall Review: These are awesome as SAN switches. We are using two (for redundancy) in a VMware vSphere Cluster with Virtual SAN
Also, this is a high performance switch designed for Data Center use: cool, clean air and a LOT of it. If you are planning on using this as an "office" switch, you can expect a lot of fan noise and a significantly shortened life span.
Pros: Our Company owns both this XS708E ( 8-port) and it's larger cousin the XS712T (12 Port)
if your looking for a low cost 10GB switch ... to connect a few servers to some backup NAS Devices (Netgear RN716X) This is the switch to buy....
it is also a "Smart Switch" meaning it does offer some basic things over a truly "unmanaged switch" like Link Aggeration to bond several 10GB ports together to get a bigger pipe (for example to a server with an Intel X540-T2 Dual port 10GB network card)
Cons: it has a very basic Web interface... you do lose some features over the XS712T model (for example it does NOT support 802.3ad LAG/ Link aggregation but the more basic adaptive (active/active active/standby) - check the specs on both switches carefully & pick the one that is best for you
Overall Review: Regarding the "NOISE" - the switch is not "Silent" but I would *NOT* Say it was LOUD... I think it would be acceptable in an office ... obviously not a library...
the XS712T is a LOUD Switch..
well worth it! True 10Gb for the home/SMB1/4/2014 3:31:39 PM
Pros: Quiet (if you keep it cool). The other review on here says its loud but mine is in the garage and i cant even hear it over the three 120mm fans in my server case.
Small form factor and comes with rank mount parts. The software is a bit bloated but you can use the switch out of the box without configuring it. Advanced settings are great if you need them. Vlans, LACP, QOS, throttling... Etc! The best mix of management for an unmanaged switch. I hope this forces Cisco to drop their copper Nexus prices!
Cons: None!
Overall Review: Copper 10Gb adapters are still expensive but well worth it if you need the bandwidth.
Pros: Does exactly what it is supposed to do.
I connected a couple workstations up to it using CAT7 cables (Coboc) and Intel X540-T2 network adapters. We were able to max out the performance of the workstations' SSD's at about 550MBps. Using ramdrives as tests, we managed a fairly consistent 1GB per second between machines on the network.
This is all achieved using a simple windows workgroup. It's about as easy as using a regular ethernet network, just ten times as fast!
Cons: VERY LOUD! I will stress this again, this switch is VERY VERY LOUD. It is unbelievable that Netgear markets this to small businesses, because it is louder than any other piece of equipment in our small 12u rack combined.
The only reason I haven't returned the switch yet is because there is no other option for 10gbe within our price range. When a quieter 10gb switch comes alone, I will be getting rid of this thing without hesitation!
My only other option is to void my warranty and use a custom fan setup.
Overall Review: It supports static link aggregation, but not dynamic LACP. This doesn't affect me because we don't need aggregation, but be warned that for LACP you will need to jump up to the 12 port model. But I hear that ones loud too!
Pros: FAST FAST FAST and did I mention how FAST it is?
Cons: Only 8 ports
