Pros: OK, so admittedly I'm a huge desktop PC fan, I never thought laptops were viable gaming platforms due to their restrictions from a cooling and form factor standpoint, but a buddy of mine who works in the Military insisted the last few generations offered solid options for those who wanted a portable gaming platform. Now, after testing the Aspire 7 A717 I must agree. This thing is a BEAST of a gaming and compute platform in a laptop chassis. On to my review! +Great looks. Its not as good looking as a MacBook or Surface Book, but it has solid looks across the board and the brushed black metal finish are solid if not top tier. +Excellent Build Quality: The keyboard, chassis, connectors are all excellent. The keyboard is backlit with minimal travel per keystroke but wonderful key response. I am typing on this laptop right now and it is excellent. Trackpad is also quality and very responsive. +Amazing performance. So this thing doesn't throttle. I tested some Dell XPS15 and the CPU throttled bad. I ran Cinebench on this monster and the 8750H clocks stayed at 3.4-3.5GHz. Amazing. During nornal usage it was hitting 4GHz. The 1060 GPU was running at 1600-1700MHz during Heaven stress testing which is very impressive as well. +Tons of outputs/inputs. USB-C, HDMI, USB 3.1, SD, ethernet jack. This laptop makes it easy to connect to a TV. It would be nice if Acer made an official docking station like Microsoft and Dell do, but USB-C and HDMI are pretty uniform. +Large, bright screen: Initially I wasn't sold on the 1080p matte screen, but the screen feels like it is much higher resolution than just 1080p. Very happy with this display!!! +Did not throttle: I tested some XPS15 with 8750H at work and they throttled badly, but both the 8750H and 1060 GPU did not throttle under heavy workload (Cinebench and 3DMark) and stayed around 3.4CPU and 1.65GPU. Very impressive!!!!
Cons: I am really pulling teeth to find negatives about this amazing laptop. -Lots of bloatware. Why? feels like old AoL days. Can either do a fresh Win10 install or uninstall all the bloat. -This laptop would be even better with Gsync and high refresh rate. I guess for an entry level laptop that is too much to expect. -Heavy, but not unmanageable. -Display at first is unimpressive with backlight glow (IPS) and matte finish, but it is actually an excellent screen.
Overall Review: Overall wonderful build quality, a minor miracle of technology to give this much performance in such a small package. The expansion bays are easy to get to but give limited access. The storage bay is a 2.5" slot that you can put an SSD in. There is also a RAM bay that is already taken by the 2x8GB DDR4 slots. You can open the entire bottom chassis to get to the motherboard also. The fact this laptop has keyboard, camera, speakers, audio, it truly is a complete PC system for a great price that will be able to handle both work and gaming loads. Perfect for your student that needs a powerful system!
Pros: Elegant looking notebook that will be good fit for use in public spaces or at work. Comes equipped with newest at time of writing 8th generation 6-core Intel Core i7-8750H processor along with discrete NVIDIA GTX1060 graphics card with dedicated 6GB VRAM. Comes with 16GB of fast DDR4 memory and with 256GB Intel solid state drive with about 200GB of space available for user programs and files (rest is occupied by OS and recovery partition). Both SSD and RAM can be upgraded through access panels located on bottom surface of notebook. I love screen on this notebook - it is large and matte (non-reflective) and does not have noticeable light bleeding, colors are natural and brightness levels is great. IPS panel is produced by LG and has resolution of 128 PPI. Keyboard has white color backlight that can be turned on and off, however I did not see a way to adjust brightness level. Speakers have excellent volume and can get very loud. I’ve enjoyed GTA Online on this notebook and it performs excellent on high settings. Following ports are available: Ethernet, HDMI, Type 3.1 USB-C, always On USB 3.0 (used to charge your smartphone when notebook is off), SD Card slot, headphones 3.5mm jack. Notebook also is equipped with dual microphone that helps to reduce undesired noise when making voice calls.
Cons: Comes bundled with some bloatware: Acer utilities that are useless for any practical purpose (Shop Ebates, Acer Care Center, Acer Collection etc.), WildTangent Games, App Explorer (by SweetLabs) and Norton Security. I recommend getting rid of those as soon as you are finished setting up and updating Windows. Battery on this notebook is not removable and not user replaceable. Touchpad is responsive but does not have that solid feeling that I like. Notebook does not have hardware Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scr Lock LED indicators (instead there’s software indication on the screen). Also there are no SSD or network activity indications.
Overall Review: Screen can be opened all the way so that notebook can lay flat on the desk. All hot air is exhausted through rear (unlike in my Eluktronics gaming notebook where graphics card hot air discharged through left side vents and CPU hot air discharged through rear vents). Function keys are configured opposite to normal notebook keyboard (for example pressing F1 key would not open help, but will put notebook in to sleep mode, so if you actually want to press F1 key, you have to press Fn+F1). Accidentally pressing F2 will kill all radios in notebook. I have not found way to change this behaviour to expected one. Also font chosen for keyboard is very narrow, making it more difficult to see letters and numbers (I am comparing this to my Eluktronics notebook with large and easy-to-see font). Notebook scored 5358 points on default settings in PCMARK10 and 3929 points in Time Spy 3DMARK benchmark.
Pros: The Acer Aspire 7 model A717-72G-700J is very nice laptop computer for the price. Included in the box is the 17” laptop with Full 1080P resolution screen and full backlit keyboard, an AC adaptor, a setup guide, limited warranty pamphlet, and FCC declaration of conformity certificate. Out of the box you can almost immediately begin using this beast of a computer for whatever needs you desire. The included i7 processor and 16GB of ram are plenty for most any home user. The downsides I have run into are related to the included Windows 10 Home for the most part. The screen is easy on the eyes and the included VR Ready NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card with 6 GB dedicated video RAM should keep the mobile gamer very happy. There is an included fingerprint sensor for use as an alternate login option. Internally there is a TPM chip for use if you plan on encrypting your disk(s). I found the keyboard light and responsive for typing and enjoy the fact it also has a num pad. The laptop is very quiet in normal resting mode and running basic applications. When I ran 3DMARK for testing the fans did end up spinning up fully. When full spun up the fans are noticeable but not loud by any means. The results of the 3DMark test can be found here. https://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/12884324. It scored 5146. More details below if the link quits working.
Cons: I know you want to just turn this one and take off personalizing everything. That said, you should set aside the first few hours with your machine just installing Windows Updates. After that you should be good to roll. I'm not counting this against the laptop, it is just the nature of today's OS's. It’s pretty heavy, though I am probably not used to such a large laptop. The right side USB ports are very snug. I feel like I could break a USB port trying to insert a flash drive. Although the screen is 17” (diagonally) the actual laptop is 19.5”. That may make it a bit large for most backpacks. In my opinion if you’re going to make the footprint of the machine that big why not go with a larger screen and a smaller screen frame? The touch pad is, well, a touch pad. It is responsive but I really wish we could go back to having left and right buttons. This touch pad, and all others I’ve experienced, have a hard time detecting if I’m trying to do a right or left click. I end up resorting to an external mouse. The power brick is large and a feels like a little over a pound.
Overall Review: Memory = Micron MTA8ATF1G64HZ-2G6E1 (2x8GB) Chips Additional slot for 2.5” SATA hard drive. Internal M.2 SSD = Intel SSD 600P Series 256 GB Model SSDPEKKW256G7 WiFI model = Intel 9560NGW Personally I’m not a fan of bloatware and will probably remove almost all of the pre-installed software. A 30 day trial subscription of Norton Security should give you plenty of time to find a good Antivirus option. 3DMark info if they link above doesn’t work. 3DMark Score 5146 Graphics Score 4726 Physics Score 10706 Combined Score 6371 Graphics Test 1 25.04 fps Graphics Test 2 23.93 fps Graphics Test 3 25.35 fps Graphics Test 4 13.61 fps Physics Test 33.99 fps Combined Test 29.64 fps
Pros: Similar specs to Acer Predator without all the bling or high price. Once in a while a great deal comes along, and this is it! If you’re in the market for a nice powerful laptop do not wait, purchase this one now! This laptop is fast out of the box, with plenty of upgrade potential for taking it to another level in speed! Excellent for video editing, gaming or just about anything you can throw at it! Back lit keyboard! Brushed aluminum top cover! Fast 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD! Dedicated NVidia 6GB GeForce GTX 1060! Fingerprint Reader built into the touch-pad! Rear vented CPU cooling, vent is 5.5” wide. Intel 8th Generation Coffee Lake Hexa core CPU! Incredible 17.3” display with full 1920x1080 is like candy for your eyes ;) Easy access to the 2.5” drive bay so you can add extra storage if needed! Other features include a dual digital mic system, 1280 x 720 HD Webcam and offline charging of devices through the USB 3.0 port. Dual band WiFi with 2x2 MU-MIMO for those with routers that offer this feature. Intel SSD 600p Series M.2 80mm PCIe NVMe, model #SSDPEKKW256G7, which reads up to 1570Mbs and writes up to 540Mbs. This can always be changed out with something that has twice as much read/write speeds and of higher capacity storage. Bottom cover needs to be removed to access the M2 slot. Two Micron DDR4 8GB SODIMM PC4-2666 260-pin bars, Model # MTA8ATF1G64HZ-2G6E1, this is 2666 MHz speed memory, and is up-gradable to a max of 32GB. The product description says memory is 2400 MHz, I double checked mine and it is definitely 2666 MHz.
Cons: None, this laptop rocks!
Overall Review: No OC capabilities, but not a deal breaker for the price, when you order this you may want to get a decent laptop cooler if you plan on beating on it ;) Of course there are some windows updates when first turned on. But after that you can start using it right away! Bloatware can be uninstalled or just fresh load Windows 10 then tweak away! Make sure you get the latest Firmware V1.19 released 7/30/18!
Pros: - The screen is freaking amazing… there’s some light bleed during darker scenes, but dang, it looks good every other time - I didn’t think I’d enjoy the fingerprint sensor as much as I am… it’s a super luxerious feature and I’m glad Windows 10 fully supports it at log-on without some kind of manufacturer application - Have not really used the internal speakers much at all… but the sound on a decent set of headphones is AMAZING - Mass storage hard drive (or at least the spot for one) is easily accessible by removing the small plastic cover on the back towards the bottom of the laptop (one Phillips head screw to remove) - OS drive is a Intel SSD 600p Series SSDPEKKW256G7 (256 GB, M.2 80mm PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4, 3D1, TLC) - (Sequential Read (up to) - 1570 MB/s; Sequential Write (up to) - 540 MB/s; Random Read (8GB Span) (up to) - 71000 IOPS; Random Write (8GB Span) (up to) - 112000 IOPS)
Cons: - Battery is internal a not easily removable like most laptops (can be replaced if it ever goes bad?) - Full of bloatware… tried to retain as much “factory, out-of-the-box” condition as I could without just bombing it and re-installing Windows. I thought I cleaned it all up as best I could… but an application called “shop eBates shortcut” kept appearing on the desktop, even after I had uninstalled it. Come to find out… it was the application “Acer Jumpstart”... who’s only function is to link you directly to the Acer website… KEPT INSTALLING the dang “shop eBates shortcut / application”! Other notable bloat-ware include such classics as “WildTangent Games” and “Norton Security”. I GET IT… I GET IT… money has to be made places…. However… when you’re paying this much for a premium gaming laptop… couldn’t you have just respected the folks that are going to buy this and not junk it up with a bunch of non-sense???? - Ethernet port does not have Link / Act indicator lights - The keyes on the keyboard are nice that they are lighted, but need adjustable controls… for right now it’s either ON or OFF… depending on the angle you’re using the laptop at… some of the LEDs can catch you square in the eye from under a row of keyes - The bezel at the bottom edge of the palmrest is SHARP, like other reviewers have noted… can’t wear a watch and type on this thing and be careful how you’re sitting… feels like it might try to slit your wrists LOL - It is huge… let’s be real… this is a DESKTOP REPLACEMENT that can go mobile if you ever find a backpack / bag big enough to fit it and the massive AC power brick - It’s pretty noticeable… but it’s like there’s some sort of “adaptive brightness” setting enabled… SUPER annoying with the screen dimming / brightening whenever the image on screen changes… (more noticeable whenever on battery) SOLVED: disable power management non-sense in Intel Display properties.... Stops the constant dimming / brightening - This thing is a battery hog… If you use it without the AC adapter, you don’t get to use the GTX 1060… and the battery does NOT last long at all. So basically, always keep it plugged in.
Overall Review: I'm not sure I'd seriously consider making this my EDC laptop (mostly due to the fact I'm having a hard time finding a backpack that will fit it AND doesn't scream THERE'S AN EXPENSIVE GAMING LAPTOP IN HERE!!!) but this thing got game. It is a premium gaming laptop for a crazy good price. Take a look at the specs… then the price… then add it to your cart and complete your purchase. You will not regret it. The only thing I can “ding” this laptop for is the massive amount of bloat-ware that comes pre-installed out of the box. Uninstall all of the junk or re-install Windows and you’re golden!
Pros: - CPU: Six core (12 threads) Intel Core i7, 8th Generation 8750H (2.20 GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 4.1 GHz. - Dedicated Graphics: GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB GDDR5. - Integrated graphics: Intel UHD 630. - RAM: 16 GB (2x8 GB) of PC4 -2666. - OS Drive: Intel SSD 600P Series model SSDPEKKW256G7X1 (M.2 80mm PCIe NVMe) with 256 GB of storage. - Open storage bay for 2.5 SSD or HDD (mounting brackets and screws are provided). - Display: 17.3" IPS 1920 x 1080 Full HD. - Left side ports: Gigabit Lan, USB 3.1 type C, HDMI, USB 3.0, SD card. - Right side ports: power, 2 x USB 2.0 ports and headphones out. - Dimensions/Weight: 16.67" x 11.41" x 1.11" at 6.70 lbs. - WiFi card: Intel 9560NGW. - Keyboard is backlit. - Acer Fingerprint Reader supports Windows Hello. - Touchpad with Microsoft Precision Drivers. - Video camera and dual microphones are located on top of the lid. - Win 10 Home. - One year international warranty.
Cons: - The PC was preloaded with some 3rd party software and desktop icons. 30 day trial of Norton security was also preloaded.
Overall Review: As always, shipping from Newegg was very fast. The item was packed well and arrived in pristine condition. Once you take the laptop out of the box, you will quickly notice the device is quite large, mostly because it must accommodate its 17.3 inch screen. However, the laptop does not feel that heavy for its size. You will need both hands to open the laptop. The finish material material is a fingerprint magnet. Same goes for the touchpad. The power supply “brick” is bit heavy. It supplies 180 watts of power (19.5 V at 9.23A). The laptop is powered by newest gen 8 Intel CPU. This is a pretty powerful six core (12 threads) CPU and its one of the top mobile processors you can find at this time. Intel Core i7 8th Gen 8750H is powering some of the best gaming laptops which are much more expensive that this Acer Aspire 7 A717-72G-700J laptop. The laptop has dual graphics card. Depending on demand, the laptop will automatically switch between dedicated graphic (GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB GDDR5 dedicated VRAM) or built in graphics card (built in graphics is Intel UHD 630). The laptop is fitted with 16 GB of memory (2 sticks each at 8 GB PC4-2666), upgradeable to 32 GB. The memory bay at the bottom of the laptop can be accessed by removing a single screw and lifting a cover. Dual fans keep the laptop well ventilated. CoolBoost feature increases the speed of system fans for better system cooling. I experienced no CPU throttling. The fans do kick at high revs while paying some more demanding games. There is an empty bay that can be fitted with 2.5 inch SATA HDD/SSD drive. The brackets and screws are provided. The main system M.2 storage can also be replaced. However, to access the main drive (and also a built in battery) it is necessary to remove the entire back cover held together by 19 screws. After I booted the laptop, I went through normal Win 10 setup, which did not take long. The BIOS update was available and I installed it. Eventually, I wiped the hard drive and installed a fresh copy of Win 10. I saved about 30 GB of space on the hard drive by doing a fresh reinstall. Laptop’s Gigabit LAN port comes handy when downloading large files, especially if your WiFi is saturated with multiple devices. Speaking of WiFi, the system has a very nice Intel 802.11ac Wi-Fi card featuring 2x2 MU-MIMO technology (Dual-Band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). The fingerprint reader is located in the top left corner of the touchpad. The fingerprint reader is very speedy and accurate. It takes a split second to unlock the computer with a fingerprint. The process is very convenient and secure. The touchpad is powered by Microsoft Precision Touchpad Drivers with standard, optimized gestures for precise and crisp handling. The touchpad is nice, has enhanced functionality with lots of options for tweaking. The keyboard is comfortable with decent feedback. Typing is easy and the keys are well sized and spaced. Backlit keyboard makes typing and gaming easier. By default, the backlight times out after 30 seconds. The keyboard has dedicated number pad. The speakers are located underneath the front sloped edge of the laptop. They sound surprisingly good for laptop speakers. I played a few battle scenes from the “The Last Ship” and could not hear “hollowness”, “thin can” sounds or distortion that plagues some laptop speakers. The conversations were clear and easy to understand. Even though the speakers are better than I expected. The battery is built in (it cannot be replaced without opening the bottom of the laptop). Full charge from exhausted battery takes about 2 hrs. The battery life is not bad for the size and power requirements. Expect this laptop to last less than 6 hrs on single charge with mixed use. The screen resolution is 1920x1080. No flickering, washed out colors or visible backlight bleed. The screen looks very good to me. However, do not expect retina quality screen. ACER provides software that allows to adjust blue light emissions (BlueLight Shield). This laptop will handle most of modern games at playable settings. I have spend some time playing my favorite games. WoT stayed at consistent 62 FPS. The laptop had no trouble driving my HP Omen monitor at its full resolution (3440x1440 at 50 Hz) although the frame rate for WoT dropped to 45 FPS. There was no hesitation or jerkiness. The game still looked very good. In the end, this machine gets kudos for performance and price/value. You get outstanding CPU and graphics card for a very reasonable price. You will be hard pressed to find better performance for the price. The laptop may not have flashy appearance or gamer design but its CPU and GPU are the same as found on much more expensive gaming laptops. Acer Aspire 7 A717-72G-700J is a great choice for mobile gamers and also for those looking for very capable desktop replacement laptop.
Pros: The smiling starts when you open the box and find this beautiful Acer Aspire 7 Laptop with a 17.3” wide viewing angle ISP, full HD 1080 screen. Want a second monitor, this is ready with an HDMI port. Built in is a 256GB SSD and an easy access location for a second 2.5” drive, for additional internal storage. There is also easy access to get to the memory sticks, should you want to increase the included 16GB, up to the maximum of 32GB of DDR4 2400 memory. This offers an additional way to log into the laptop with your finger print, what an easy why to get started. This is a special edition sold only @ Newegg and they absolutely got together to equip this to be one awesome deal and product. From simple use to demanding use this is loaded with an Intel i7 (6 Core) processer that runs at 2.2Ghz and boosts to 4.1Ghz and with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU/VPU, you not only have a powerful video card, what you see on the screen is vivid and stunning. The wide angle viewing leaves you with no blurred or distorted views. We’re not always directly looking from a straight forward view and it easily offers a clean view to someone looking from a side angle. The keyboard is illuminated with the option to darken if desired along with media keys. With the wireless MIMO (multiple input and output antennas) your Wi-Fi connection is 2X faster and more stable. Equipped for both 2.4 & 5.0Ghz connections. Compared to another Laptop in the family, I found this very noticeable in gaming and multi-tasking. About those smiles, what a pleasure to use and have a great connection at home and away. Another great feature is the ability to direct connect using a LAN cable, many laptops no longer have a direct connect option, just Wi-Fi. With 3 USB ports you will have enough connections to cover your needs. One is a 3.0 with power off charging, which is a great feature and even better when traveling, so you can charge your Cellphone, Tablet or other when your powered off. Two others are 2.0 and an additional USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C offering up to 5 GBps. A built in HD Webcam which supports HDR and digital microphones, plus two speakers for quality audio. Acre TruHarmony and Dolby premium theater sound. From music to watching a movie, I am impressed with the sound quality. Built in also is an SD card reader which is very convenient to have it right there and easy to use. Included is a 4-cell 3220 mAh battery for long battery life. The listed information states up to 6hrs, I got just over 9 that I’ll explain in the mid-section of my review. The included AC power connector has a very good length cables, giving some freedom to connect and charge or use. One of the best things you get with this Aspire 7 is Acer. They are a leader in the business, have a fantastic support system and a 1 year warranty (extended coverage available thru Square trade for a small fee, should you feel you would like more coverage). 1 year is a common standard for Laptops and PC’s). There is a reason that current reviews are 96% 4 to 5 stars, this truly is a pleasure to use, you won’t stop smiling and knowing you just picked a winner and a joy to use.
Cons: Not one Con do I have to report, not one! But I do like to use this section as con no con too. To start off: Battery life. This is a powerful Laptop with beautiful 1080 HD graphics. The way to get longer battery life is to lower settings. Lower graphics is a big battery life saver. It doesn’t matter what brand laptop you have, they have the same challenges to offer long use battery life. And when you have a powerful Laptop like this one that can boost to 4.1Ghz, it needs electrical power. Slightly lowered graphics, I still had a beautiful picture and did manage to get just over 9hrs. That was not 100% constant use. I watched a movie waiting at an Airport, general browsing and listening to music. Setup: like any new Laptop or PC, you will have updates. It’s a good thing that updates happen and once your done, your ready to go. In general, your first turn on and setup is super easy, it’s the updates that take longer, to get done faster connect directly with a LAN cable. I don’t know why some reviews complain about a feature or so, that this doesn’t have. This Acer Aspire 7 is one loaded, featured and very hard to best at it’s price laptop. One review questions how this can be offered at such a great price, it’s almost impossible to find another one that doesn’t cost 1/3rd more.. I agree… it’s a Newegg ‘only’ special offer and it’s a awesome priced, featured offer!
Overall Review: I have mentioned the smiling I do when using this and its great graphics, you will be smiling also. The specs are listed, and I want to talk more about my real-life use and enjoyment having this Aspire 7. I have not turned on my PC for much of anything since receiving this to review. You don’t even need a desktop anymore, this is as if not more powerful as my hotrod PC I built. I have an additional 2.5” drive for extra storage on it’s way. I did load 2 games on this and played for hours on end. I attached and external gaming mouse, used the laptops keyboard and an also connected gaming keyboard. The gaming keyboard I personally found easier for the quick finger movements of game play, This laptops keyboard is also just as good, I found no real noticeable difference, except for the key style and being used to it in game play. The visuals, the speeds and capabilities are ready for you to use this for any needs and wants you have. There are bigger and smaller laptops available, this 17.3” screen is a winner to me. It’s thin, weighs only 6.7lbs and a great travel or stationary computer. Smartly equipped with Windows 10 64bit (not 32bit) and there are a few preloaded software’s like Ebates, Firefox, Candy Crush Saga and Norton Antivirus and a few more. You can keep or easily remove them, to make this the way you want it. I do suggest adding that second storage drive for convince and an external drive if needed. An external drive is a good way to do backup’s too. If you want a laptop that has Wi-Fi connection that holds and performs with MIMO, CPU speeds from 2.2GHz and long battery life or boosted to 4.1Ghz to handle anything you want, this has all the features to bring a smile to your face too. I can’t express enough the thrill and smiles using this Aspire 7. I put my reviews thru the gambit of uses and situations I can, over hours and hours of use over a couple of weeks. Not just here’s some info and specs. It’s a difficult choice and money spent in selecting your new laptop, the selections are numerous. We are instructed to tell it like it is, good and bad. I can only shout out how amazing this Acer Aspire Newegg Special is! If you are still looking, mark this one to look at again. It will be hard to find one with all these options at this price. Newegg and Acer did put together a winner in this Aspire 7. Knowing there is a return policy makes this even easier to see if this is the right one for you. I not only believe your smiles will not stop, you will also write a fantastic review and tell others to buy this Newegg/Acer special edition.

Pros: The keyboard is a raised chiclet style keyboard. The keys are spaced and have little to no wobble at all. The keyboard is backlit in white to make seeing easy, and offers an almost mem-chanical feel. A soft but tactile-satisfying depression. On the underside, there is easy access to basic expansion. A simple screw and pop for access to an unpopulated 2.5 HDD/SSHD/SSD bay, and the same simple screw and pop to access the 16GB DDR4 RAM. Getting into the whole chassis was a bit more of a pain, but told me a lot about the laptop once I did. Acer has a lot of screws and careful pops to go through. Once inside there was a lot of empty/underutilized space, but let’s tour the less accessible areas. Inside the laptop is an Intel 600P NVMe SSD, it’s decent, benching at the 1500/r and 500/w speeds via Crystal disk. The 600P came out around 2015 so a little behind some of the choices but not bad by any means. I was a little surprised. The HM370 board can support up to 32GB DDR4, the stock amount is 16GB in dual channel. Acer undersold themselves here, if this matters to you. They listed stock 16GB @ 2400MHz, however it’s actually 2666MHz. A minor discrepancy, but maybe they will alter the listing to reflect the higher speeds (it’s a good thing after all). The AC WIFI card leads to two antennae that are installed in the bezel of the monitor. This WIFI setup is enabled for MU-MIMO tech which basically means your laptop will not hog the network. It will take what it needs and send what it needs back. Inputs are listed, but if I don’t mention a simple homerun, I will feel bad. The HDMI is 2.0, why does this matter? The built-in display from Acer was a little lack luster (more on this soon). HDMI 2.0 allows for up to 4K UHD @ 60Hz. For someone who uses their laptop like an external desktop setup, this is fantastic. For watching UHD videos, for editing, for a better experience in general, this standard was the right decision and left me super satisfied (Kudos Acer, you could have dropped the ball there, but you didn’t). The SD card reader also gets an honorable mention but was lukewarm at best transferring data at 82-93/MBps. Other ports include: USB-C 3.1 USB-A 3.0 2xUSB-A 2.0 Secure Ethernet 3.5MM Headphone/speaker jack Besides having the market’s beefy 8750H hexa-core i7, 16GB of DDR4 @ 2666MHz, a pretty fancy Intel 600P NVMe SSD, all nestled in to a solid HM370 chipset, it also has something else that was pretty surprising. The speakers. Now, with a grain of salt, for laptop speakers they sound great. Loud, clear, but lacking in bass as may be expected. The speakers aim angled out from underneath where the chassis curves up a tad. This allows them to downward fire and bounce up rather than sound muted/muffled. They sound nice but, they are still laptop speakers.
Cons: The design fits and falls in line with what most Acer Aspire model laptops look like. It features a combination of aluminum/plastic feel, with a majority plastic designed bezel. This leaves some flimsy feeling areas which only bother me when I mess with them intentionally really. The framed bezel around the lower center of the laptops display as an example. Also, the majority of the laptop is not fingerprint resistant. The track pad location is located a bit to the left. Nothing against lefties, but most of us use our right hand. Why it wasn’t more centered I’m not sure. On a large laptop like this it makes a small annoying difference. If I start in the center of the trackpad and go to each edge it falls short of reaching and emulating the screen. Also, the trackpad has a fingerprint reader. Setting up biometrics via Windows Hello is simple in the settings and the reader has been very accurate on all attempts.
Overall Review: It's all about price for me, 5-stars (eggs). You get more, for less. The 4-Cell battery is better than anticipated. While you get some below average battery time (a couple of hours depending on what you are doing), it seems clear Acer would expect you to be plugged in more often than not. This falls in line with being advantageous of the laptops abilities, such as, being plugged in and using the 1060, turboing the i7, etc. I watched movies on it for about 6 and a half hours straight before the 10% warning appeared. These times will vary depending on what you’re doing. If you are rendering videos, anticipate a much smaller window of battery life (same goes for playing games). In person perception vs actual results got me here. The display is gorgeous to my eyes when looking at it. Colors pop, even distribution of light, contrast seems okay…however…I was surprised that testing conflicted with my perceived opinions of greatness. On the black crush test, the last notably visible black is box 6 (that’s not great for an IPS display in the field of contrast). During motion tests (including UFO) the over and under scan seemed exaggerated. This leaves me conflicted, I think from using it, from seeing it I feel like it is great, but testing tells me it’s a bit underwhelming. While on the display topic, given the hardware awesomeness inside I think Acer fell short not going with a higher resolution display option. 1440p would have been fantastic here, a lot of laptops are going higher-res routes, and this laptop definitely has the power to manage this. The display does output a very acceptable 320-350nits brightly lit areas are no real challenge. TEMPS WHILE GAMING: Under load the temps stay within reason. Different tests yielded different results. Surprisingly the old Valley benchmark was the warmest hovering around 77c after 30 minutes (warm but acceptable). Newer tests like Unigines Superposition Benchmark stayed in the low 60c range, but occasionally tipped at 70c. Below are the various Scores from several tests, consolidated for your convenience: Crystal Disk for 600P SSD – 1557/R 519/W Firestrike Score- 10,296 GeekBench Core i7-8750H – 1) Single Core – 5165 2) Multi Core – 20,515 GeekBench Core i7-8750H OpenCL Score – 22,938 GeekBench GTX 1060 CUDA Score – 129,179 Unigine Superposition High settings – 5661 (no stutter on play through) Things to mention: Fan sounds of the twin blower style fans is noisy. It can take a 30dBa room, and if you’re in front of the laptop it will feel like a 60dBa room. I suppose a lot of cooling needs to happen for the tri-pipe design that’s implemented. One day we’ll have better mobile solutions for cooling and fan noise, but that day is not today. Areas above the keyboard get quite warm at an external temperature of 46c. The exhaust in the back feels like a portable heater at times under load. The laptop does push some boundaries in the temperature department. That being said, it’s really nothing outside of reasonable. When running VR for seven hours straight the rear exhaust hovered around 60c (140f) external exhaust temps. That is hot enough to feel like you should be concerned…but not hot enough to be of any real issue. IS IT REALLY VR READY? Yes absolutely. A buddy brought his Rift over and we hooked it up and played all kinds of VR games for about seven hours on it. We used a laptop cooler for some of it to lift it up, and tested it flat on the table also. While thermals got high flat on the table the external didn’t pass 60c in temps. That’s pretty hot, but it did stabilize in that heat range never getting hotter than that. We tried to heat throttle it but it managed everything and provided stutter free VR gaming. So, yeah, impressively VR ready. The only comment my friend made was you will need a hub of 3.0 inputs for sensors, as the laptop lacks the actual required, and prescribed amounts.
