Great For Extra M.2 Drives After Upgrading 7/30/2020 11:26:42 AM

Overall Review: Overall, this is a great enclosure if you want to replace an M.2 drive and need a place to put the old one. I found it very helpful to connect the new drive to my PC so I could clone the old drive onto it before installing it. It's shockingly fast over USB-C and a decent form factor.

A small downside is that this "tool-free" enclosure still requires an included Philips screwdriver to mount the board inside. It also requires you to hold 1) the board, 2) the drive, 3) a mounting nut pressed into the end of the drive, 4) a screw and driver. It's doable with two hands, but know that it requires more dexterity than "tool-free" might imply.

FYI: inserting the SSD contacts into the M.2 slot took way more pressure than I expected. It was double or tiple the force I use to install M.2 drives on motherboards, and I had to tilt it up 45 degrees and wiggle it laterally at the same time. It wasn't quite enough to bend the board, but it was enough that I was starting to worry.

Good Overall, Some Small Gripes 7/30/2020 11:13:28 AM

Overall Review: I had a *very* difficult time getting my Samsung 970 installed in this. It does actually fit, but you have to angle it up at about 45 degrees and wiggle it laterally and use more force than in a standard motherboard M.2 port. If the screw holes don't line up for you, make sure you have it inserted far enough to cover the copper contacts on the drive.

I'm also a little disappointed that this "tool-less" enclosure requires you to use a screwdriver to actually mount the thing inside. What is the point of it being tool-less, then?

That said, it's a great form factor, it's shockingly fast over USB-C, and it's super helpful for cloning a drive from a PC that only has one slot for storage, like in an ultrabook. I'd recommend it if you buy a new M.2 drive and need a way to use the old one.

Works only one month! Very bad warranty !!! 7/23/2020 5:35:42 AM

Pros: Very small, very fast, good performances. No IO errors.

Cons: Stop working after a month. Orico gave me one of the worst warranty service i've seen. They request for video while the Newegg "Seller message" service permit only pictures and filter any link to video I provided.

Overall Review: While the case seem good, the warranty from Orico is really bad. So I rate this product to 1 egg. (Wish to put 1 but it because I first clicked on 5 and after it isn't permit to change it ???)

heatstink 6/26/2020 1:31:03 PM

Pros: works

Cons: this heatsink does not cool your m.2. you will need to buy another heatsink and modify this case to get it to fit.

Overall Review: my m.2 was sitting at 43 degrees with the stock heatsink. i have the eluktronics 500gb and its max operating temp is 40 degrees celsius. i bought a heatsink from corn electronics and it brought the temps down to 33 degrees. the new one was shorting the board, so i had to put some thermal pads between the mount and the m.2 for spacing. it works though.

Item was destroyed (during transit?) 6/19/2020 6:26:22 PM

Pros: Currently working as advertised.

Cons: It does not advertise a specific speed. Currently, I am getting nowhere the implied maximum theoretical transfer rate of USB 3.1 (which is approximately 800 MB/s). I am getting about 300 MB/s.

On top of that, see below for my experience with the 3rd party handling of said device.

Overall Review: It arrived on my doorstep with a graping hole in the soft envelope packaging.
(okay well maybe it isn't totally destroyed inside)
Opened package to find it looked a 300lbs. man had jumped on the box.
(okay well maybe it isn't totally destroyed inside)
Opened box containing my purchase, to find it almost completely destroyed. The plastic around the pins for the M.2 drive was broken in 2 spots, to the point where I had to use a small (seriously tiny) flat head screwdriver to pry the plastic upward to even be able to slide it into the slot. On top of that, the heatsink on the enclosure was completely bent. Additionally, the tiny screwdriver that comes included for the screw to hold the drive in place was broken in half.

Currently the device is working as it should, but that doesn't take away from the fact that one of the most vital components on the board is completely damaged, and I can't see it holding up over time.

Screws in too tight - stripped out with provided screwdriver 6/15/2020 8:34:28 PM

Pros: Looks like it would be good - has more than 1 capacitor in circuitry

Cons: Screws are in way too tight . They ended up stripped out with provided screwdriver . I tried a different screwdriver - but nothing doing . They should leave out the screws like they did with the M.2 screw and riser .

Overall Review: I can't believe I waited weeks for this to come and when it finally did ... it was useless . Now I have to print a shipping label at officemax and then find a UPS store to send it back . One thing bad about online purchases ... you never know what you're going to get . And most of the reviews on here are all lumped together with a completely different item . It wasn't always like this ...

Good, but can only dissipate so much heat 6/15/2020 5:38:41 PM

Pros: - Good looking design
- High quality cables
- Comes with silicone heat transfer pad
- Aluminum heatsink
- Full "3.1 Gen2" bandwidth capacity

Cons: - Can only dissipate so much heat
- Not waterproof, not that it claims to be
- Not a "tool-less" design
- Heatsink / heat pad slides across the NVMe card when affixing the two halves of the enclosure together, which will eventually destroy the fragile heat pad if you swap NVMe cards often.

Overall Review: This is a good enclosure, but don't put a high performance NVMe card in this and expect it not to thermal throttle. The overall inadequate surface area of the heatsink will not fully cool faster drives like the Samsung 970 Evo, temperatures will regularly exceed 60°C and cause thermal throttling. Lesser loads will be fine, but bulk transfers of hundreds of gigabytes at a time will cause high heat buildup. The Interface itself can only handle 1250MB/s maximum, so for permanent "thumb drive" use, a lower performance NVMe SSD makes more sense as throttling is likely to cut that in half anyway. I use this to clone laptop system drives for SSD capacity upgrades, and as an emergency recovery tool after being frustrated by the throttling when moving large video files for off-site backup. You could also rig some kind of external cooling fan and run this at full speed if needed, or find a design with more metal (and expense).

Reading was fine, writing didn't work for anything larger than a gigabyte or two 5/25/2020 8:02:37 PM

Pros: It could read over 800MB/second, but writing was less than half the speed for the first

Overall Review: It could read over 800MB/second, but writing was less than half the speed for the first couple of gigabytes and then it would just hang, and I'd have to unplug it from the USB port and then plug it back in before it would work again. I don't know if the one I got was defective or not, but I didn't check it out until almost 8 months after I bought it, so it was far too late to return.
