Pros: - Excellent sound - significantly improved over the DT 770 Pro. A very bright sound, which I prefer. Some have complained about this, however I feel that you can always EQ brightness away if you don't like it. You can never add more than the headphones support. These have excellent brights. The bass response is also great. Definitely a V-shaped sound, but the mids don't suffer and they're neutral enough to be studio monitors. - Comfortable to the point that I FORGOT I WAS WEARING THEM multiple times. I couldn't believe it when I first noticed that - it blew me away. First pair of headphones I've forgotten I had on! Combine this with the sound quality and fidelity and you end up with a phenominal listening experience that sounds like your audio source is right there and you aren't listening to a recording. This point was why I felt compelled to write this review; when I realized for the second time that I didn't realize I was wearing the headphones, I thought it should be noted. Round cups aren't for everyone, but I love them. - Nice, long cable - long enough to run from the back of a PC without issues. There is also a con to this; more on that below. - Very easy to power, even at 250 ohms: I was able to drive these from all of the following devices: my desktop PC (EVGA X299 FTW-K motherboard with Realtek Audio ALC1150), my laptop (Acer Predator G9-793, also with Realtek Audio), my PHONE of all things (Samsung S8+), and of course my audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett 6i6). I thought 250 ohm cans were going to require a serious amp but so far pretty much everything has driven it fine... though the sound quality was definitely better out of the PC that the phone, and was probably a little bit improved out of the audio interface, which simply has a better amp. Do yourself a favor and get a DAC if you don't have an audio interface.
Cons: Realistically, I don't see much in the way of cons from my perspective but here are some things to consider: - Very bright sound. I love this, but you may not. Some have complained it's bright to the point of being painful, but I just haven't experienced that. Again, you can always EQ that away if you don't like it. - They don't isolate at all. Pros and cons to this, but if you're looking for sound-isolating headphones, these won't cut it. (Check out the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro if you're looking for that.) When in a loud, public space this might be an issue, but I personally prefer it to closed-back for two reasons: 1. It really improves the sound stage and makes it sound like whatever you're listening to is right there in the room with you and 2. it is much easier to hear someone trying to get your attention; a requirement if you're a husband/dad like I am. As a result, this is only a con if you're seeking sound isolation. However, it's also important to note that others can hear what you're listening to (especially at higher volumes), so consider that when selecting your content and volume level. - Build quality is good, but just this side of spectacular. I have no concerns about the longevity of these cans, but I do wonder if an unintentional impact might damage the outside filters. (i.e. the area pointing away from your ears.) Not that it's inferior to other open-back headphones; I only mention it because the DT 770 Pro is built like an absolute tank by comparison. - The cable is straight, not coiled. I personally prefer this at my desk, but it's less ideal on the go because it's a LONG cable. You *can* replace this if you want and you're comfortable with soldering. I had this done by a repair place recommended by Beyerdynamic when I damaged the 1/8" plug on my DT 770 Pro. The result was that they're now too short for comfortable use in at my desk but are great on the go. I'm leaving the longer cable on my 990 Pros though because it's much better at home.
Overall Review: You should use these with an amplifier and/or DAC (Digital to Analog Converter). You CAN use them straight out of a device, but audio quality suffers. (And what's the point of headphones like this if you're going to destroy the sound quality?) Most decent, modern audio interfaces for home recording will probably suffice for this.
