Pros: Less restriction in the flow path for the vacuum impeller and filter. This reduces sound and should improve the suction power over the previous generation. The new pathing software seems smarter and less likely to get stuck, trapped, or have its battery die on the way back to its dock. The app is well done and should be easy to use for most people. Includes a pre-filter before the paper filter which should help increase filter life for the paper filter.
Cons: The paper filter is very small. I am an engineer that deals with filtration and this filter is miniscule, which tells me this vacuum isn't moving a lot of air. This can be validated by monitoring the vacuum air exhaust as well. I do like the design better than the previous gens filter though. The brushes/cylinders that pick up dirt and debris only cover the center half of the vacuum. It relies on a weak little spinning flipper brush to toss any debris toward the actual vacuum area. This means that this thing never actually vacuums near your walls or any obstacles. I had a competitor's model years ago where the brushes were the entire width of the vacuum. That thing did an amazing job by the walls and up against furniture, but I was eventually unable to find replacement parts for it, like batteries and filters and had to retire it. The dirt bin is hard to empty. The dirt gets pushed over a raised area and then when you go to empty it, everything gets trapped behind that raised area and won't come out. I have a short hair dog and all of the hair gets trapped in the bin and I have to try and pick it all out of the bin manually. This is actually pretty annoying and the reason I deducted an egg. There is absolutely no way this didn't come up during testing and someone at Roomba said....'well thats good enough, release the product' Unbelievable!
Overall Review: I have owned 5 different robotic vacuums from 4 different companies. (Still have 3, 1 for each floor of my home) They each excelled at different things and had downfalls. My previous generation Roomba (700 series) was pretty underwhelming and had some serious issues. These issues appear to have been addressed with the newest generation of Roombas. If you can get over the cons I listed, I would definitely recommend this for someone looking to buy a robotic vacuum for the first time, or adding another one to their home.
