Pros: Was able to capture from my VCR. Video and audio were good quality. Though it does not include the Ulead software claimed, the capture software provided is simple and easy to use. Having lightweight capture software can be good thing. Some computers might not have sufficient resources to handle capture while running a full-featured program like Ulead.
Cons: The "Overview" section of Ulead lists as a feature: "With Professional and easy to use video editor software: Ulead Video Studio 10.0 SE DVD", but no Ulead software is included. The simple capture program provided works, but it is hardly "Turning your PC into full-featured video recording and editing workstation". Documentation is minimal, badly translated to English, and largely devoted to use of the Ulead software that is not included. Installation was a bit of a guessing game.
Overall Review: I previously purchased a similar device elsewhere and found it useless (shaky video and no sound). This product worked well, making it a very good value for the money. ----------- In an effort to help others, here's my installation and operation experience on Windows 7: - First tested VCR playback with a TV. - Inserted small CD in computer and ran autorun.exe - Clicked Install. This installed: Fushicai VIDEO DVR honestech TVR2.5 - Conected USB EASYCAP 2.0 device to VCR outputs and to USB connector on computer. After a few seconds, my system tray said it installed successfully, but the device manager showed a new "Unknown device" with yellow exclamation box. - Detached EASYCAP. - The yellow mark remained on the Unknown device in the Device Manager. I did R-click->Uninstal on the Unknown device. - From the small CD, installed Directx 9. It immediately responded that my Directx was up-to-date. - Plugged in EASYCAP again, and the Device Manager blinked, but I couldn't find any new device there. In particular, there was no "Imaging Device" (referred to in the paper instructions). - Looked for but did not find Fushicai VIDEO DVR software (installed above) in Windows "All Programs". - Found and launched Honestech TVR2.5 software. It asks for a key, which is printed on the CD. This "TVR" program turns out to be the capture software. It's very straightforward. Here are some notes about it: - Click signal source on left ("Composite" for me). - Turn on your signal source. It should diplay on the TVR monitor window. - Use red "Recording" button to start and stop recording (tested--success!!) - The default destination for recorded video is My Documents\honestech TVR. - Note the toolbar along the center bottom of the blue window. "Property Settings" allows you to choose various recording formats, image size, quality parameters, and destination directory for video files. - "Schedule" button allows you to schedule a recording at a particular time (tested--success). - "Snapshot" button makes a JPG file of the current frame (tested--success). - There is a slide-out portion at the bottom of the blue window, which shows the contents of the destination directory. On the left, you can choose to display files as icons or a list, and you can send the selected file in email (tested--success). - File playback controls are along the top. - Volume and mute controls are on the right. - If you click on the logo in the upper left, it brings up the honestech website on your browser.
