Great Performance 12/27/2014 6:42:25 PM

Pros: I'm using this in a Dell PowerEdge T620 server running Windows Server 2012 R2 for our Tandberg LTO4 tape drive. It backs up and verifies 180GB of data in under 2 hours, as compared to about 7 hours in our 2003 server with a U320 PCI-X card.

Although not officially supported, the Server 2008 drivers available at Adaptec's site work fine on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Cons: Server 2012 not officially supported.

Incompatible with Mac Boot Camp 8/31/2012 4:22:06 PM

Pros: Works great with a run-of-the-mill Windows PC I bought. Has drivers for Windows 7. Although it's an Ultra320 card, it seems to work fine with legacy SCSI-I devices as long as you have the right cable.

Cons: If you put this in a Mac Pro, and try to run Windows under Boot Camp, Windows hangs early in the boot process. A web search shows other people have the same problem. It seems the card is trying to perform BIOS operations, and since Macs only emulate BIOS (they really run EFI), the card hangs the boot.

Overall Review: Be sure to get the right end on your cable - this card uses 68-pin VHDCI, *not* 68-pin DB-68.

Adaptec SCSI Solid 7/22/2011 2:34:12 PM

Pros: Adaptec. SCSI reliability. PCIe. Vista, 7, and Linux all support this out of the box.

Cons: PCIex1 is limited to around 250MB/sec so you won't get full performance from your SCSI 320 drives. But performance is still good. Pricey for no RAID. Will need floppy drive to install with fresh XP install.

Overall Review: I own 5. 1 in Win2000 server, required floppy and F6 install. 2 in 2 Vyatta machines each running 2 PCIex1 Intel NIC's as well. 2 in 2 Win7, 32-bit. All were used to install with no IRQ or PNP problems. Run SCSI because business reliability. Not sure why others experienced PNP issues or installation issues. SCSI 320 drive becoming scarce but still my pref. for reliability

Good Card - Solid 6/2/2009 11:24:53 AM

Pros: Installed this card for use with two scsi cheetah 15K RPM drives in software RAID 0 under Vista Ultimate 64. Works well. Driver installed without any issues. Been using this setup for about 6 months now with no problems. However..see cons.

Cons: None really. Card works and it works well. Adaptec is a great company, and newegg as always delivered as promised.

Overall Review: I have built 100's of computers and thought that this software RAID 0 experiment would be worth trying...here are the results. Having this card as a PCI-E x1 device is great, however I am assuming since it is a non-raid card it was meant for use with devices for quick storage on a SCSI solution. If you try this in RAID 0 through a software RAID setup, it will bottleneck. You simply cannot get the throughput on a PCI-E x1 slot for this sort of application. Not really a con for the board itself, just writing this for anyone who plans on using it the same way I did. At first I thought it would be better to do this instead of using a SATA II hardware RAID 0 setup, but it wasn't when it came to real world results.

Works well when it works 5/29/2009 5:08:56 PM

Pros: When it's up and running, it fast. It uses a PCI-e 1x slot.

Cons: My main system, built on a Asus m2n-sli deluxe, has experienced weird lockups, video corruption, corruption on my SATA raid, mysterious SCSI failures during boot, refusal to boot....

I've RMA'd the mobo, replaced the video cards, swapped the PS - no joy. Eventually this card was the only piece of original hardware left. The system locked up and refused to boot, generating tons of SCSI failures. I yanked the Adaptec, stuck in a 6 year old LSI PCI card, and BINGO! NO ERRORS, no problems, no lockups.

Overall Review: This card is garbage. It's a waste of money; worse, it will cause you days of downtime while you jack around with every other piece of hardware in your system. Avoid it like the plague.

It's a shame; I still use an old Adaptec 2940 UW card and it's rock solid. Total failure on Adaptec's R&D.

Great choice for use with a tape drive under 64-bit Vista 1/7/2009 11:03:56 PM

Pros: 1. This is a great choice if all you need is a SCSI card for use with tape device, e.g., a DAT drive, which is pretty much the only reason anyone would need a SCSI card anyway.

2. If you need something that will work with 64-bit Vista, this is pretty much the only game in town; there are no working 64-drivers for the old ubiquitous 2940-family cards.

3. It only takes up one those otherwise useless PCI x4 slots.

4. It worked immediately (but see below.)

Cons: The only negative I can see is that it's a bit expensive.

Overall Review: A couple things you need to know about installation under Vista:

1. Ignore the instructions about creating a driver diskette; it doesn't work under Vista and it's not needed anyway. The driver you need is on the CD in the obvious directory. It can also be downloaded from Adaptec site.

2. Under Vista's "new and improved" security model, if you're expecting to use this card with a tape drive (and why else would you buy it?) you'll need to be running with administrator privileges or you'll need to modify the registry to grant R/W access to ordinary users. Otherwise, you won't even be able to tell there is a tape drive, which can be kind of disconcerting if you don't know what's happening. (There's a pretty good tutorial pm the vistax64 site; search for "vista tape read write access" and you'll spot it immediately.)
