The pcWRT router is a WiFi router with a focus on security and privacy. It is built on the open source project OpenWrt but with a simplified user interface designed for the average home user.
As a security router, it is completely standalone, managed with a web interface. As such, you don't need to register for an account in order to use the router. And you don't need to download an app.
The router comes with 5 preconfigured VLANs, which enables you to separate your guest network and less secure devices such as Iot devices from your main network. If you work from home, you can create a dedicated network for work and separate it from your home network. The router supports up to 4 SSIDs per band.
You can use the router to set up parental control content filtering with OpenDNS, CleanBrowsing, Cloudflare etc. In addition to the multitude of options to set up parental controls, it also has builtin defense against bypassing techniques such as VPN, proxies, private DNS (DoH/DoT) etc.
VPN support improves your privacy by hiding your traffic from the prying eyes.
Three VPN protocols are supported: WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2. You can also configure multiple SSIDs and some of them through VPN but leave others off of VPN (for websites that don't work over a VPN connection).
