Hanging In For The long Haul 5/5/2017 5:33:38 PM

Pros: Reliable, trouble-free, relatively quiet. reasonable performance. I've been running 3 of these in RAID 0 for going on seven years with fairly heavy use. No issues with any of the 150GB drives. As I write this, I'm hoping I'm not 'jinxing' myself!

Cons: Less than extpected I/O performance for a 10,000 rpm drive. Running several HDD benchmark and testing programs, it's a little disappointing that I/O and bandwidth is barely higher than a WD Caviar 7200RPM 1G HDD I've tested previously. Even more, a WD 30EZRX (Green) 3G; only 5400RPM moved 23,000 I/O's per second @4KiB blocks with 98MBs bandwidth... that's really wierd! The best any of my 150GB Velociraptors could move were 19,500 and 79 respectively. Not bad really, just sayin'...

Overall Review: I'm not sure if this model's still in production; if so, it's a good buy if the price is right.

A reliable and fast workhorse! 9/8/2016 5:28:33 AM

Pros: Fast, reliable, surprisingly quiet, consistent, great in RAID configuration or alone.

Cons: None so far in over 7 years of use!

Overall Review: I have been putting the 150GB Raptors through hell and back for years. I totally forgot I even had one installed in my main workhorse server until I just checked SMART to see if everything was hunky dory. It is. I used to have 150GB 10k Raptors set up in RAID configurations but now have a single 150GB Raptor handling the primary boot disk for a Linux server. SMART is reporting almost 7 years of run-time - most if it would be continuous. These Raptors have outlasted many a 15K SAS disk installed in a higher end server in my experience.

It appears that 1TB is the largest size WD is making the 10k Raptors in, and that's a shame as these bad boys could give SSDs a run for their money if they could keep the price-per-gigabyte lower than SSDs. Currently a new 1TB Raptor is going for the same price as a 1TB SSD which is madness. The only idea I have on this is that WD is getting ready to either retire the Raptor or keep it around as a moderately priced medium-capacity (by todays standards) workhorse beat-it-up disk. After all, unlike an SSD, you don't need to run TRIM on a Raptor to make sure everything is "worn evenly" or hit a wall on the number of writes you can perform. These suckers will keep on ticking. (Knocks on wood.. with 7 years of use, I get nervous with ANY drive...).

Come on Western Digital - introduce a 2TB or larger 10K Raptor and price it at just $250 and I'm sure all of us Raptor fans will fill our low-/mid-end server RAIDS up with them.

Long life, 6/20/2016 5:29:55 PM

Pros: 5 year warranty expired in 2012, lasted another 4 years beyond that. Longest lasting drive I've ever had.

Cons: Failed suddenly, albeit after 9 years.

Overall Review: Would buy again, if SSDs weren't so much better than HDDs

Pros: No problems after running for 6 years.

Cons: Adds more noise, vibration, and heat.
Being a bit faster but smaller than a "regular" hard drive, this was the precursor to the SSD. Nowadays, just get an SSD instead and enjoy the quiet.

Totally unreliable 8/24/2013 4:30:07 PM

Pros: Fast while working

Cons: I bought two of these from newegg and they both failed after about a years service both were replaced by western digital under warranty and now one of the replacements has failed. All failed dramatically losing all data and of course between backups so some data totally lost in all instances. I will never use these drives again. Even the working one will be removed. Also I'd recommend mirroring.

Overall Review: Even the working one will be removed. Also I'd recommend mirroring, at least that is what I'll be doing in the future.

Don't buy these three out of four failed. I have other drives that have been running for over twenty years and still going.

5yrs old Still Strong!! 9/2/2012 8:14:49 PM

Pros: Um....5yrs old and still going like it was when new. I love these drives. Yes you can hear it churn, but honestly, it doesnt bother me. This whole rig is so quiet - it makes any noise seem noticable.

Cons: None - Cant say ive had many drives last this long.

Overall Review: Raptors are the best drives you can buy of course except SSD's. But until they become reasonable, these things are just about as fast...and much cheaper! Also, Ive had much better luck with hard drives lasting longer when I put a cooling fan on them. Works for me! This drive has had a fan on it its entire life. All drives I have installed in computers over the years seem to have much longer lifespan with a cooling fan.
