Pros: I already had 3 of these drives, 2 for more than a year. No problems at all and none with this one so far. DFT ran fine and the drive is in operation. I don't consider it loud at all.

Cons: None really except my comments about shipping.

Other Thoughts: If the drive was packed better, perhaps there would be less failures. Bubble Wrap is really NOT the way to ship drives.

Dead on Arrival

Pros: None

Cons: Dead on arrival. Did nothing but click and lock up the system. I hope it was just this one, a second unit is on the way sometime within the week. Followup review upon reciept.

Other Thoughts: I bet these drives are only spot tested and this one was obviously not a tested item.

IBM--continued?

Pros: This harddrive was a speedy, high capacity drive just long enough to load all my stuff onto it... Is that a pro? Take what you can get... Newegg is replacing the defective harddrive @ a cost to me of only $7 for the USPS delivery of the defective critter to them. Kuddos to Newegg!

Cons: The harddrive died, need I say more? Hitachi !>= IBM.

Other Thoughts: Every company has their bad apples, don't let this discourage you. I am simply telling of my experience. Maybe I got the bad harddrive out of a shipment of 10,000...

Not Recognized in Vista Ultimate

Pros: It's not DOA.

Cons: The drive is not recognized by Vista. It shows in the device manager, but does not show up in my computer. A warning to anyone wanting to buy this for a Vista machine, don't.

a review by an engineering prof.

Pros: FAST
Extremely good -- *IF* you know what you are buying and *IF* you know how to take care of one.

Cons: Hot...

Extra speed is produced by using extra electricity -- extra power -- which causes the microchip that moves the heads to create more heat.

Speed is ALWAYS produced at the cost of extra heat. IBM/Hitachi drives are by far the fastest, but they should NEVER be used in an enclosed space without a fan. If you are foolish enough to want to do that to a hard drive, then don't waste your money getting a good fast one -- get a cheap slow WD instead.

The "clicking death" that these drives sometimes experience is ALWAYS produced by the voltage divider (inside the chip that controls the heads) getting too hot and then breaking. Once this voltage divider breaks the chip can only locate the heads all the way in or all the way out -- "slapping" the heads from one end to the other is the sound that people sometimes mistakenly think is a mechanical failure. "Refurbished" drives are often drives that have had this microchip replaced in order to repair the "clicking death

Other Thoughts: Essentially all of the negative complaints about this and other Hitachi drives are the result of people being foolish and putting them in places that do not have adequate cooling.

The other complaints are about noise, but as you can see these are not consistent from user to user. This is because most of the noise comes from how a hard drive is mounted, and what it is mounted to, and not from any differences between the internals of the drives.

To solve both "problems" I recommend using " iStarUSA iStorm 8 Series Hard Drive Cooler" with ALL hard drives. The drive cooler both secures the drive and lowers the temperature by >20F (14C) which makes the difference between lasting "forever" and "failing soon" in high usage drives.

Best in the business

Pros: Hitachi makes the best drives in the business. Faster, cooler, and more reliable than all others combined. I've fixed PCs for years, and these are hands down the fastest drives made.(See:Average seek time) All other manufacturers have also given me more failures than Hitachi. When IBM and Hitachi merged hard drive divisions, they left all others in their dust quality wise. The only SATA drive faster(and hotter/more expensive/less GBs)than this is a WD Raptor.

Cons: I noticed that it ran a little hot during file transfer while using a legacy molex connector instead of the SATA power connector. (Might account for a heat death) All manufacturers have DOAs.(sad but it's true)

Other Thoughts: When replacing ANY hard drive, backup your data, image your old drive to the new one, then put your old one in a drawer for a while. Should you encounter a bathtub curve failure,(hardware tendency for high initial and end of life[warranty] failure rate)you will have your old data ready to go.

I would NEVER use anything but Hitachi drives in my personal machine. This one gets my vote for "drive of the year." Trust my experience.
