It's doing well what it should do

Pros: It's doing what it should do and working well and that's saying a lot today when you are lucky if you can find a new hard drive (from any brand) that doesn't drop like flies. And when brands that you thought you could trust now sell disposable hard drivers (because that's how Short they last) I'm looking at you WD.
I am happy with this Seagate Hard drive and hope it lasts along time. I have my media collection on it and it streams it very well to my HTPC in my living room.

Cons: I can't think of any.

Other Thoughts: Today you are going to have to try other brands like Seagate and others to see if you can still find a new hard drive that is not disposable, when the brands you thought you could trust, their drive keeled over dead & sent you data to digital Never Never Land.

Better than expected honestly.

Pros: Price per TB and performance.

Cons: 7.27TB, everything PC related is based off 1024, with the exception of storage. you don't buy 14.9GB of ram, do you....? lol

Other Thoughts: Lets try something different, up until I had so many Seagate 3TB M001 drives die on me, I tried some WD 6TB reds, one got sent back twice, then finally died out of warranty recently, even have a 6TB Black that came DOA, so much for best of the best. Funny thing is i have several 3TB WD and Seagate NAS drives in an 8 drive RAID10 for well over 5 years now and have yet to have any problems. I am using this particular drive for backup purposes. I was pretty surprised how fast this drive is, 235MB writes and 245MB reads. Also for such a large format drive, its access times are pretty low all considering. It was nice to just plug it in and it just worked, very first power on it chirped(maybe something got knocked out of place during transportation?), but after that its been whisper quiet, almost had me scared there. After the run around with 6TB drives and its not only me, I am hoping the 8TB drives last longer, but honestly not being DOA is a great start for me, 2 of 3 WD 6TB drives came DOA, one was a RED and the other one a BLACK, but surprisingly on RED worked from the get go and has for almost 4 years from now, so who knows. Cross my fingers. But honestly this drive is faster and quieter than my WD Black 6TB and around the same price, with the exception of the 2 less years of warranty, its a pretty good deal.

Strange behaviour.

Pros: 8TB

Cons: I am not sure if this can be defined as Con. I just received this drive few days ago. I intended to use it as a second 8TB drive on my server. The system uses Debian Jessie. The system has 1TB, 4TB and 8TB-(archiving drive) so far, all seagate. This was going to be a second 8TB drive. I discovered that as soon as I mounted the drive it started to make an interesting sound, which I can say is sort of like jumping sound. The drive goes immediately quiet as soon as I unmount it, hence I do not think it has anything to do with overloading the sata controllers. The motherboard has six sata connectors no optical drives in the system. Oh yes, the motherboard is an asus gaming pro board. Any idea? Should I return it and ask for replacement?

Hello Nick,

Please try running our self-booting "SeaTools for DOS" diagnostics to determine the overall drive health:

Let us know the results by contacting us directly so we may assist further. It may also help if we can listen to a recording of what the drive noise sounds like.

Seagate SkyHawk 8TB

Pros: Packaged very well and quick delivery from Newegg. Installed the drive in a Flir NVR and the drive was recognized and immediately ready for use.

Cons: No problems found

Other Thoughts: I was a little concerned because I found the list of recommended drives for this NVR after the drive was ordered. The list of recommended drives did not list 8TB drives (6TB was maximum).

Sounds like a floppy drive...

Pros: I'm using in a stand-alone system with four 3-megapixel IP cameras recording at 1080p at 30fps. No motion detection so it's guzzling a lot of HD footage at once.

I used to have only a single 1TB hard drive in it and would hold only about a week of footage (at most). Now this 8TB drive has been installed for 2 weeks and it's ~30% full.

Giant, fat, 8TB drive optimized for DVR. Should work well in things like TiVo in addition to standard surveillance systems.

Plays back fast. I can seek, fast-foward, slow-mo, whatever through four 1080p 30fps video files like a breeze.

Cons: It's not silent. My drive sounds like a floppy disk drive when going. Not quite as loud, but the same "whee, whaa. whee, whaa". It doesn't do that during playback or idling, just recording. "Whee, whaa" Non-stop.

Maybe I got a faulty unit, but I have waited two weeks and it's still doing it. I figure it's the read/write head moving around... I have no idea... It's not something the 1TB drive did or any other hard drive I've ever owned.

Other Thoughts: At least it's not clicking or ticking. The thing works just fine so far, but I waited over two weeks to write this review because I figured it would fail on me from the sounds it makes, but not yet. The 3 year warranty is assuring, and I very likely will need it.

Lost a egg for the funky floppy drive noises. Price seems fair. Warranty is good. Drive performs it's duty.

Dear Mindy,

Our Skyhawk drives should not make any unusual sounds. If possible, please install the drive into a Desktop system and try running our "SeaTools for Windows" diagnostics to determine the overall drive health:

Fairly decent, but low warranty makes it an iffy buy at best.

Pros: - It is very quiet on a Synology machine. Same when I moved it to a T350.
- Space… 8 TB!
- No frills, it just works!

Cons: - It does NOT make use of the 6.0 Gb/s bandwidth available.
- 3 year warranty. All electronics should have 5 years minimum if the company stands behind it’s products… you decide ...

Other Thoughts: This is not a con, however, the drive does get quite warm after about 7 days of testing. This is ok, as long as you have enough ventilation in your case.

Crystal Mark Stats:

235 / 232
3 / 2
234 / 229
.9 / 2.5

All in all, this is a fairly decent drive as long as you use it as a clone drive (or in a raid). Due to the very low warranty, I wouldn’t use it for anything important.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Mr S.,

We wanted to note that the SkyHawk 8TB Surveillance drives are optimized for use with video surveillance systems. it is not clear from your review if this is the configuration of your system. If you have a RAID array, please consider out Ironwolf drives. The Pro version comes with a 5 year warranty:

http://www.seagate.com/internal-hard-drives/hdd/ironwolf/

For regular Desktop systems, our FireCuda drive has a 5 year warranty:

Huge, huge, huge.

Pros: Although not using it as a surveillance drive, I'm extremely happy I was able to pop this drive into my existing system and giving it a drive later through disk manager. After this 10 second process, be ready to just fill this drive up with all your data, but you'll most likely be disappointed that it's so big you'll take a while to even put 2-3TB of movies and other files in this.

It's rated for lots of use 24/7, so I don't have a doubt that I'll be fine using it much more sporadically than what it's rated for and it'll outlive the warranty many times over.

Don't be alarmed if it gets a bit hot to the touch when you're transferring large files, it's normal and that goes away when the data is done being passed on to the drive.

Even with my case open, I couldn't hear a single thing coming from the drive so it's as quiet as SSDs without moving parts. I'd honestly expect no noise complaints if you'll have this enclosed.

Cons: As another user added, this doesn't include the free data recovery service from other high-end enterprise drives, but not something I could knock an egg off for.

Other Thoughts: You will need a SATA data cable to plug this into your system, whether it's a PC rig or a security system without a hot-swap mechanism where you can just throw the drive in without any cables.

A good product with no issues

Pros: Works just fine in my Swann NVR home surveillance system with 8 cameras.

Solidly built. It feels like a nice expensive drive (as much as a bare OEM hard drive can, at least).

Rated for 180TB/year workload. That works out to 493 GB/day or 20GB/hour. Seagate claims this will support up to 64 cameras. I'm not so sure about 64, but at 20GB/hour it should easily handle a bunch of cameras spaced around your house or work.

Supports 210MB/s sustained data rate. My home surveillance system doesn't tell me its MB/s throughput, so I can't tell you if this claim works out in real life or not.

According to Seagate's measurements, this guy should be able to store 1600 hours of footage before overwriting itself. I haven't had it long enough (and don't have enough cameras) to test out that much time, but there it is.

Includes "tarnish resistant components" to protect drives exposed to non-environmentally conditioned areas. Take that with a grain of salt since I didn't use this outside of my house and don't know how much actual value or protection it provides.

3 year warranty, better than most standard hard drives.

Not very noisy in my NVR system. The case fan is certainly noisier than this hard drive.

Cons: This drive doesn't include the free data recovery service that Seagate's IronWolf Pro drives have (which admittedly cost a lot more).

Average operating power (according to the specs) is 9W instead of 6.8 for the 10TB drive. I wonder why?

The drive is rated to operate in temperatures of 5 C (41F) to 70 C (158 F). So, while it includes tarnish resistance to protect it from the elements, just make sure those elements are in a moderate temperature range.

No cables are included, so make sure you have some spare cables if you don't already have any.

Other Thoughts: This drive has worked fine for me over the past week with no issues. If the price is right and it's what you're looking for, I don't see any reason NOT to buy this drive. Naturally, I'll update this review if things change...
