Working flawlessly after six months

Pros: 1. I've test this device with as many as eight security cameras concurrently with no issues.
I have also tested the drive on a three tuner DVR (watching one recorded video, while recording three other channels).

2. Measured performance (Sequential Read/Verify):
Outside Diameter (nearly empty): 185 MB/sec.
Middle Diameter (half full): 160 MB/sec.
Inside Diameter (nearly full): 95 MB/sec.
Slightly (5 MB/sec) slower than the WD80PURZ.

Cons: Runs 2-3 degrees Celsius warmer than other Hard Drives in the same case.

Other Thoughts: These drives are designed for 24/7/365 sequential write operation.

Total disk sectors: 11,721,045,168.

Solid Surveillance Drive

Pros: Six terabytes of awesomeness are packed into this purple drive*. It performed well in both DVR and NAS settings, and never missed a read or write. If it’ll be fast enough to suit your purposes, this purple drive is for you.
*5.45 TB when formatted NTFS

Cons: This drive, as expected, was too large to be recognized in my antiquated 480p DVR system and my older USB2 hard disk sleds.

Other Thoughts: When I tested this drive, I couldn’t simply drop it in my DVR system and report back that it worked. For the first week of testing, I plopped it in my NAS system that runs in my garage. I let it run for a week straight while performing data transfers. Now mind you, that isn’t for what this drive is meant, but it served relatively well for its unintended purpose. And it held up to it. While I was testing it as a NAS drive, I moved almost 5TB of data sporadically throughout the week and not a single bit was lost.
Now on to its stated purpose, a surveillance drive. The 3.5” disk fit perfectly in my DVR system and was recognized after auto-formatting. I run a modest four 720p camera DVR system and this drive did not miss a single frame of recording. I was able to review footage on demand without lag (even though nothing eventful happened, like always). The drive has more than enough space to store video in my week of using it in my DVR system; I have yet to fill up the drive with security footage. In fact, two weeks wouldn’t have filled it completely. This whopper of a 6TB purple drive is certainly a HUGE step up from the 2TB green drive that was in use before this drive arrived.
Of course, reliability has not been an issue in the two weeks I’ve been testing this drive. If a problem occurs in the next year with this drive I will report that here.

Good Drive for Live Video Recording

Pros: -6TB, pretty good price/GB.

Cons: -RPMs are a little low, don't think I would want more than 4-6 cameras on this one drive. I would be concerned about lost frames if a large number of cameras started recording all at once. Add more drives in an array to support higher camera counts.

Other Thoughts: I know my pros and cons are a little sparse this time, but I'm planning on using this review more to educate what separates these drives from something like a NAS drive.

A drive intended for recording live video - like that of a surveillance system - prioritizes bit rate. It will sacrifice the occasional bit or two, depending on error correction systems, in order to maintain a constant bit stream. This is critical when it comes to continuously writing something like video to a hard drive. If the bit rate drops too low, or even rises too high, you can run into gaps in your recording, instead of just places of less fidelity. Surveillance drives also tend to have slightly more robust mechanical systems than your average drive, but roughly on par with NAS drives.

A drive intended for a NAS is just the opposite. It prioritizes bit integrity and sacrifice bit rate to maintain this. This helps with the redundancy that people get NASes for in the first place.

If you're looking for a NAS drive, and this one happens to be on sale, don't be tempted - and vice versa. Get the right tool for the right job.

Size Matters - And 6TB is Perfect for Home Use

Pros: - 6TB of storage should accommodate most homes or small businesses. Replacing the stock 1TB drive in my system I'm now able to record weeks, instead of days, off 4 camera at 1080p running 24/7. Tweaking motion capture settings drives this near a month.
- This drive is a just meant to be a write horse. And it does exactly that. I've had this for a few weeks and it just works. Quiet, cool, no problems.
- Not specifically for this drive, but the model itself: The WD Purple Drives come in a lot of sizes. I'll touch on this in the "Other" comments but pick the right size for what you need.

Cons: - Honestly, I don't have a single complaint. Plug it in and you're good to go.

Other Thoughts: Reviewing a drive such as this doesn't really require much to say. It's priced right and runs 24/7. The only advice I can give you is to size out your drive before buying. There's a few sites out there that will give you good estimates depending on how many cameras you have, the video quality, and how long you plan on keeping video for. Check there FIRST and then buy second. As pointed out I can get a few weeks of 1080p video over 4 cameras which is pretty much your standard entry level home security system. If you go with the 8 camera package I don't see any reason why you couldn't get 10 days of 1080p footage stretched to 2 or 3 weeks if you configure motion capture correctly. Overall, I'm very happy with this drive.

Gobbles up Data

Pros: Does what it's supposed to do, without getting too hot or noisy. I wasn't able test maximum speed as reported in other reviews, but can report that the drive stayed reasonably cool in a convection cooled "fanless" set up. During a five hour transfer session at 25 MB per second, in a 75° room, the drive heated up to 90 to 100° Fahrenheit. I don't know how much hotter it would run if pushed to the max, but of course you'd probably have a fan in that case.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I wish I could update my review in a few years to let you know how it all turned out...

Works like a charm.

Pros: Installed this in the security system serving 6 cameras at my store. The unit is very quiet and operates as expected. I ran it for several days, alone and with 5 other drives and it was the quietest drive of the group. If a 5,400 RPM 64MB cache surveillance drive for 24/7/365 use is what you need, look no further. The price is really good too.

Cons: There are no cons!

Great drive with plenty to spare

Pros: Surveillance drive designed for 24/7 use
Seamless integration in most surveillance setups
Big capacity and low power consumption
Pretty silent thanks to 5200rpm

Replaced a smaller skyhawk drive i bought for 3 cameras, could barely hold 4 days of footage now i can run all 3 cameras at 1080p for 2 weeks!

Cons: None really it does whats asked of the drive

Other Thoughts: With support for more than 8 bays your security storage needs are covered with reliable drives designed to take the punishment of always being on.

I have 3 cameras one on my driveway the other 2 on the porch and my front door and i can record with superb quality for up to 2 weeks, which is amazing coming from 480p. The drive doesn't get very hot nor can i hear it but i assume with more drives you will start to notice them as with any mechanical drive really.

Speed isnt really astounding though as it's intended use is for video footage it's throughput is more than capable of handling everything it's asked of, that being said i get around 110-115mb/s of write speed.

6TB of Purple Power

Pros: Rugged design for 24/7 use in hot and Harsh environments.

6TB can hold the data of 16 Cameras at 1280x720 for almost 9 days.

Low Power Consumption means less heat created.

Seamless integration with many name brand enclosures.

Fully capable in large raid arrays.

Cons: Only 5200 RPM, but designed for 24/7 Use up to 180TB/yr

Other Thoughts: An excellent choice for any Surveillance system with capacities up to 10TB and the drives over 4TB in size support 8+ Bays while the smaller drives support up to 8 bays.

Was not a loud drive for me, Maybe 30 decibels, but you are going to hear 10 of them running together no matter what.

In my use after sustained use the drive leveled out at about 120MB/s during constant use, this will vary by system obviously.
