Where does one get the hard drives to put in the drobo or what do you recommend?

It takes most standard 2.5" SATA hard drives, which you should be able to find here at Newegg. I used some spares from when I upgraded our laptops. If you're buying new drives, check Drobo's site to make sure they're compatible: the FAQs on Drobo's site explain which drives are incompatible and why--especially if you plan on using SSDs. For what I use ours for, the spare hard drives work fine. Obviously, the faster and bigger the drives, the more performance you'll get.

Would this device support simultaneous attachment via USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt?

No, you can't have the Drobo connected to multiple interfaces at the same time. It will only work on whichever interface establishes a connection first.
