DOA out of box, won't obtain IP address - zero response from support

Pros: None,.

Cons: Starter utility won't discover device. DHCP logs show nothing.
Installed hard drives per manual, device powers on, drives spin up, indicator lights show drives connected, USB light goes on and off when external USB stick is attached.
Tried flashing firmware, same issue.
No response from Zyxel support after 2 attempts to contact them via their website.

Overall Review: Apparently some versions shipped directly from the factory with this issue. Supposed to be a decent unit otherwise.

Not quite worth it. Dead after 2 years

Pros: At the time (about two years) a decent value for a "plain old NAS" ... good enough to use on the internal network as a media share, without having the power hog PC running (gamine computer).

Cons: Not too configurable. Users don't work as expected.
Firmware updates tend to fail and one of the firmware updates fried the unit.

Even trying the forced flash via USB did not work. Lasted about 2 years and generally did what was expected, but two years of light duty is not a great value. I will replace with a barebones build with drive bays and USB 3.0.

Overall Review: Web interface is weak. Yes, it is supposed to just be a simple NAS, but ...

Setup and Stable

Pros: Price and Setup Wizard

Cons: Does not recognize CyberPower UPS.

Overall Review: Two WD Red WD40EFRX installed RAID1. Took two hours to complete build after Firmware update.

Best NAS from a price/performance aspect

Pros: You can't beat this NAS at the ~$100 price range. You will have to spend at least 50% more to get better read/write performance. I get write speeds in the 70-75mb/s range consistently, and read speeds in the 80's-90's, in Raid 0.

Cons: None in this price range.

Overall Review: I was a little disappointed with my read/write speeds until I did a little research. Removing unused protocols and enabling jumbo frames on my adapter (not the NAS, but on my network adapter) yielded nice results.

Good stuff

Pros: - Fast, easy setup right out of the box
- Product does exactly what is advertised (so far)

Cons: None to speak of

Overall Review: I bought this mainly to move streaming from my laptop to TV, and keep my laptop out of that loop. I wasn't too crazy about working my disks like that for very long.
This box and software does exactly as the documentation states. And nowadays, to buy something brand new, get it home and it is not broke or faulty, you have done something remarkable.
I have bought far too many things made in Asia that are not what the advertisement says they are, and are total junk. As good as this equipment works I bet it is not made overseas..

Excellent little NAS for internet users

Pros: * Lower cost than competition
* Basic plug-and-play
* A lot of hidden features and applications
* Still supported (last firmware update 9/30/13)
* Integration with Dropbox, Flickr, Youtube
* JBOD, Raid 0, Raid 1 support
* Extra USB ports for external drives

Cons: * Hidden features may require technical knowledge
* Tablet/Phone web UI is a bit rough around the edges

Overall Review: Picked this up a few weeks ago from a close-out auction. Expected some basic NAS features and was going to use it to share some drives on my network. Was very pleasantly surprised to find features such as Flickr and Youtube upload support, Dropbox support including a .torrent watch folder. Automated torrent and NZB download support. Media streaming. Extensible through many applications. If you search the net you can even find instructions on how to install plain old debian on it (which is why I bought it, but now I find no reason to).

There might be easier (and more expensive) NAS units for the non-technical folk to set up and use, but if you can poke your way around a fairly friendly UI, aren't intimidated by many configuration options, and looking for a little box to just pull down from the internet, this just might be for you.

Good for the non-tinkerer

Pros: Easy setup. Good for anyone who ONLY needs a network storage solution and nothing more.

Cons: Configuring permissions do not work as you would expect.
You cannot install your own OS
The only cloud storage solution available is the terrible Polkast
Very very slow

Followup to previous review

Pros: Print server, hackable - get into Linux shell, 3 USB ports, web server, ftp server, mySQL, Python, DropBox integration, auto-sync with another NSA, JBOD (two volume) or JBOD (combined volume), RAID 0 & 1.

CPU is as fast as a Atom N450. If you know Linux, you will have a blast playing with essentially a cheap Linux box.

Cons: RAID 0 and 1 are slower than JBOD (1 drive). I ran many benchmarks and unbelievably the RAID-1 was considerably slower than JBOD with 1 drive. It's likely the RAID is implemented in software, and the CPU can't handle it.

Overall Review: Here are my figures transferring a 3.8Gb ISO file:

JBOD RAID-0 RAID-1
Read 1:23 1:30 1:53
Write 1:17 1:18 1:30

Here are figures for transferring 1.0 GB of Windows System32 files (4077 individual files)

JBOD RAID-0 RAID-1
Read 4:00 4:18 4:26
Write 1:12 3:31 1:48

It's amazing that the RAID-0 is the slowest in Writes. It might be possible that the NAS caching algorithm is not optimized to write to 2 drives at once. I also notice in using RAID-1, the mirror synching occurs *after* the data is written to the 1st drive.

For the money, this level of performance is tolerable. But if you are seeking a fast server replacement, look elsewhere.
