Question 1

Is this monitor compatible with a Dell XPS 8700? I already bought this monitor but HP cancelled my HP Envy desktop order due to a 'system error'. I don't want to buy from them again. I was thinking of keeping it and buy a Dell XPS desktop instead.

I do have the HP Envy 32 hooked up to a Dell XPS 8700. You need to make sure that your XPS 8700 has a compatible video card that can power the monitor. It either should have a display port or high-speed HDMI port.

Question 2

My HP Envy 32 shows a resolution of 1080p. Is this the same as 2560 x 1400 ?

It is actually a greater resolution than 1080p if you have it set at the 2560x1440. At 2560x1440 it is 1440p. A 1080p set is usually a device set to 1920x1080, which is 1080p. One note that is important to know is that you need to have a video (card) output device that will crank out your video at the aforementioned resolution. I have a Sapphire Tri-X OC R9 290 which can more than handle the resolution rates. A great card that supports a great monitor.

Ok, so one piece at a time.  First, your attempt at a different card is understandable.  There is so much information in the world to disseminate and we are not electronics experts.  I found on a number of builds that some video cards refuse to allow booting unless either the RAM is placed first or the GPU is placed first.  It needs trial and error to establish which way will work, if in fact the new card will work at all.  Still this may be your problem with no boot.
Next, your original video card appears to have enough juice to power this monitor using either the DVI or HDMI.  I prefer HDMI due to the built in digital audio and video in one connection.  I ended up with the AMD Radeon R9-280A in order to power the Envy 32” and an ASUS 28” monitor.  I used the miniport from the Envy to the miniport on my video card.  The claim was full resolution from this connection though I did not recognize a significant increase in resolution to the “Max resolution: 2560x1600” stated in the tech notes.  I did enjoy the notion that I had reached the “Max’ in any case.  I had such high hopes for that little or a lot extra in the visual zone.  This is not to say that the Envy didn’t cut the muster, it most certainly did.  I love it, and working in this much expanded environment is such a pleasure along with the ease that accompanies the experience.  
In any case, use what you have now or experiment with the newer card.  You should have no problem getting a sweet spot in resolution either way.

Can outputs from two sources be displayed simultaneously?

Hi, I'm Tom and the best I can do here is to say I'm not sure what kind of sources you might be considering.  If it is two separate computers you want together I've not tried this.  I doubt that would work in any case.  I don't think most monitors are rigged for this event.  In any case, if it is two computers you want together, you could use a KVM switch between them.  It's a simple switch whereby you connect 2 computers together and switch between them to your hearts content.  They are very inexpensive these days and there's a large variety to choose from.  The hook up is quite simple though one needs to be sure to buy the appropriate switch that will accommodate your connections to and from the switch and computers.  I hope this helps.  T

Is the screen glossy, or matte with some anti-glare layer?  If anti-glare coated, does it cause diffraction, aka "rainbow-effect" with white pixels?  My HP ZR30w has this issue and is horrible for text and code development.

I am not certain of the terminology in your question so I'll answer in layman only.  I don't see any glare whatever and text is as good as I've seen on any monitor.  My graphics card below: Also powers an ASUS 28" monitor.

Does this work ok at 1920 x 1200?

I've ran it in both resolutions.  If you use the HDMI cable you can only get to that resolutions.  If you use the displaypoint output you can run it up to highest settings.  Currently the HDMI cables can only go up to 1920 X 1200.

what tower goes good with this monitor?

This monitor really shines playing Pandora.  And the screen is great.  I use it for spreadsheets & it's fantastic.  I have a Dell XPS 8700 with an i7, nVidia 660 video card, 12Gb RAM & a 2 Tb hybrid HD.  Any system with a PCIe video card with HDMI output will work.

What are the complete technical specs? How many of what kind of inputs are there? Does it have USB inputs? None of this info is on your page nor is there a link to any.
