Great for Home Use

Pros: Works great as a little span port for my home internet connection.

Cons: You need Windows to configure this thing.

Great Switch

Pros: This is a great switch. Netgear quality always comes through.

Cons: This really needs a web interface instead of requiring a Windows binary. I often do network setups from my laptop running Linux. If I need to set anything on these switches I have to reboot into Windows.

Overall Review: Good simple switch with some basic configuration options.

IGMPv3 Snooping!

Pros: The switch works great for an IPTV network where you need to filter IGMP/multicast packets from flooding your network. With the latest firmware, it can successfully filter multicast from a U-Verse network. I'm sure it works with other IPTV networks that use IGMP as well. To get IGMP snooping (espescially v3), you normally have to buy expensive managed switches designed for businesses, whereas this is a great inexpensive solution that is basically plug and play (unmanaged) with a few options that you can configure.

Cons: There is no web interface to configure the limited options, but since it's unmanaged except for a few configurations, this isn't a big deal. Just install the software and configure once and you are good to go.

big buy

Pros: has lots of stuff from big switches

Cons: none yet

Overall Review: I use this with a voip phone to manage the QoS direct from the modem and to manage my bandwidth to my routers. This little guy was super impressive.

Great features, slow and insecure management

Pros: This switch does everything I could ask of it: VLANs, port mirroring, cable testing, QoS, and 802.1q support. It's also well-built, in a sturdy metal case, and looks like it will last forever.

Cons: The management interface is horribly convoluted. It uses a proprietary Adobe AIR application, requires that your PC be on the same subnet as the switch, but also literally broadcasts UDP to the FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF address, making sure everyone on your network gets your configuration, including your plaintext password. Netgear has seriously gone out of their way to invent a protocol and an application far more inconvenient and insecure than a simple web interface.

Although my switch doesn't seem to be buggy (firmware 1.01.19), I've heard a lot about duplicate pings, firmware updates bricking switches and enough general unpleasantness to guess that Netgear isn't really testing the firmware on these switches before they release an update.

Overall Review: Netgear has produced some really great hardware here, and made a serious effort to ruin it with poorly tested and incredibly vulnerable software.

I don't hesitate to recommend this switch for an end-user in a very controlled environment, but I would absolutely recommend against using it in an environment where you might expect anyone to ever listen in to your traffic.

Simple config but works well

Pros: This is a manageable smart switch at an amazing price. Works just fine.

Cons: Switch configuration is via an application that must be installed on your computer. The network switch does not have a built-in web browser for configuration. I guess at this price, there are some compromises.

Two Switches, Both Working Flawlessly; Agree Out-of-the-Box Functionality Seemingly Restored

Pros: Understandable frustrations w/ the ping issues endured by early adopters, but I have to agree w/ the 2nd to last reviewer in that both of my switches worked flawlessly right out of the box and thus these seem to have been coming out of the factory with all prior issues resolved for quite some time. The unit itself is aesthetically pleasing, the 'unduly-controversial' mgmt app / interface (see below) is simple & pretty straightforward/navigable, and what little throughput performance I've monitored so far seems on par w/ expectations. Unit is compact, but for it's smaller size, definitely has the added weight-to-volume (relative to a pure 'dumb switch' w/ metal casing, like my notably-larger TEG-S50g) to feel particularly substantive. I haven't bought all the hardware I need just yet for implementing my intended VLANs, QoS levels, etc. - so my apologies for writing a 5-egg review before fully testing - but if a problem comes up once I do, then I'll be sure to come back here w/ edits.

Cons: 2 FYIs, not cons: 1) Unless you have a very user-specific reason not to do so, when the 3 security alerts pop up (at 1st launch of the installed mgmt app) for allowing 3 component .exe's through the firewall, dodge a headache & just accept the LAN permission/exception for all 3 w/out question. Seems I didn't accept for one for whatever reason & had a hell of a time afterward w/ pinpointing what was causing the app switch detection to fail right out of the gate. Those 3 apps somehow aren't auto-logged in the permissions/exclusions list in order to even know the names you need to then manually add in to fix it, and NETGEAR doesn't have that simple list documented ANYWHERE... (2) Secondly, be sure to find the Device Info app page containing the factory firmware# if you want to jot it down prior to updating - since, oddly, its not located in the same sub-tab/section. Just be sure to thoroughly click down through the left-hand nav tree. But once you find it, updating is a total breeze.

Overall Review: While I agree that a web interface would be more flexible & convenient for non-Windows users (I also split my time - between Win7Pro and dabbling as a Linux newb) - and that Netgear's odd strategy of creating a middle-ground between dumb & smart switch seems to be inconveniencing a greater % of customers than it ever should - it's still worth pointing out the obvious here, and that's that this is blatantly classified as an UNMANAGED switch, NOT as a smart switch. Even if initial manufacturer warnings were lacking, everyone giving low ratings to this line of products because they were disappointed by the extent of mgmt options - for an unmngd switch - need to exhibit a bit more honesty/candor in their account. I'm not targeting this comment at reviewers for this particular listing as this is pretty tame, but people are giving 1-2 -egg ratings for other models mainly for this reason, & it just seems like a bit much just because Netgear tried to carve out a niche they all bought into...
