is this item brand new or refurbished?

The one I got was brand new.  I would highly recommend it.  I changed my laptop's wireless adapter to an Intel Network 7260.HMWG WiFi Wireless-AC 7260 H/T and I get wireless speeds typically around 780 Mbps.

Do I need a separate modem with this router?

If you're referring to a separate cable modem, then yes you do.  You could buy something like the Motorola SURFboard SBG6580 if you're looking for a cable modem and wireless router combo, but you will not be able to change your network name or password.

I like the EA6200 because it allows me to hook up my security DVR and home automation equipment through port forwarding, and I like being able to access my home network at the office or on my phone.  The EA6200 also allows you to prioritize bandwidth for different devices.

Question 3

I've seen all the bad reviews of this, is this router worth it for moderate use and reach at least 20 yards away?

I've had very good luck with mine, however it does not have that kind of range. I have mine in basement and use a range extender to improve signal in a bedroom about 30' away and another extender in garage about 50' from router. Also I tried a couple different extenders and recommend Netgear EX2700. The signal in the bedroom was fine for basic internet but for streaming movies the range extender was required. Hope this helps, make sure to update firmware which is easy with included software.

will this router work with a Dell 9300 with XP, another newer Dell laptop, Ipod and a desktop?  Is there any advantage with the AC , currently using a WRT54G?

This router works great with my Dell xps 8500 with Windows 7 and this should be the case with xp.  I also have it working on a Dell Laptop running Windows 7.  It is much faster than the WRT54G since it can use wireless N speeds.  It also works great for wireless B and G.  I bought this to use a wireless AC Bridge in the basement and it works flawlessly.  If you don't have a wireless AC capable device, you will not benefit from the AC mode.  I also have my ipad connected through wireless N and it works great.

Cab the EA6200 router be used with USB 2.0?

U cannot directly plug in a modem to the router with usb. It works with 10, 100, 1000 based Ethernet catagory 5 and 6 and of course wirelessly.

Not sure what the differences are between these two models. I do know that I wouldn't buy a linksys again  limited range. Need to manually reset it every month or so to clear routing tables and restore performance. ...

I want to extend the wireless in my home. Currently have an att/uverse 2 wire 38000HGV-B. Will this do the trick?

I don't recommend it. You may be able to use this router as a WAP but a dedicated WAP set at a wired location nearer to the center of the area you need to cover would be better and less expensive.

If you'd thought of replacing the uverse wireless with the Linksys I'm afraid you'd be disappointed.
