Actual managed switch, smaller than many dumb switches.

Pros: 32 vlans suppported on 8 ports. Clearly more than you'll need. Cable length / fault detection. Bright link and activity lights on each port.

Cons: Does not fetch DHCP by default. Must assign special IP or download special software to your computer to perform initial configuration on switch.

Overall Review: D-Link has a slightly unusual interface that does not save the current config to firmware until you explicitly ask it to. I think some people configure the switch and then freak out when it reverts to defaults after a power outage. Seriously, save and apply. Pros understand this easily enough, but these devices are now priced in the consumer range, and it will be an interface issue for some.

Packet loss, arp failures, grounding, waste of time and money

Pros: It was cheap

Cons: Where to begin.

The first surprise was needing to ground the device manually. Most switches either don't require a ground, or use a three prong cable for grounding; but maybe this is just a me thing, so I won't count this against the switch.

Packet loss everywhere. I used this to replace an existing 10/100 switch I was using with a few vLANs. I went from 0% packet loss to 5% packet loss. Contacted dlink technical support, who indicated this is likely an issue with the auto-negotiation not working correctly. I did try adjusting the speeds on the ports to no avail.

Not surprisingly, arp wasn't working correctly on my network, so nmap wouldn't find all the hosts on the network. My SSH sessions would randomly fail.

The switch would revert to using the default IP address instead of DHCP. With the packet loss, I'm not surprised.

My Google Hangout calls would drop audio randomly every 10 minute or two for a couple of seconds. Took me awhile to identify the new switch as the problem. This takes off four eggs.

Perhaps the packet loss only shows up when under load, as I was transferring some data at 100mbps for an extended period of time... but this is a 1gbps switch, so..... :-(

Reverted to my trusted old 10/100 and everything worked great again.

Long story short, don't have time to identify problems with switch or RMA. Not worth my time. Buy something else if you want a switch that works.

Overall Review: I wanted to like it, but like lots of girl friends, it wasted my money and time.

Really nice inexpensive gigabit switch

Pros: Very reliable. This thing has been sitting in my living room switching traffic for my media devices for over a year without a hitch. It has a simple management interface. I think I set it up to prioritize traffic to my gaming device, but I haven't explored it fully. Still, any management in this price range is pretty sweet.

Cons: None that I can think of unless you'd prefer to have the power connection on the same side as the Ethernet connections. This one has them on opposite sides.

Overall Review: Highly recommended for SOHO use.

Steal of a deal

Pros: This is a great price for a gigabit switch. It is unbelievable for a managed switch. Granted, the options are limited for beginner users, but VLANs are so much fun. Not the same as Cisco switches, so it is a bit of a learning curve if you are used to trunking like a Cisco admin.

Cons: Learning curve with DLink specifics, but otherwise not much else in the way of CONs.

Basic Managed Switch

Pros: - Properly tags VLANs unlike some other cheap smart switches
- Performance is excellent, able to push gig through multiple ports simultaneously
- Doesn't require you to use the management desktop application, has a web ui that's accessible right away at 10.90.90.90, which is excellent

Cons: - It does randomly lose it's configuration randomly, despite saving the configuration to NV_RAM as others have suggested, so make backups of your configuration after they're completed through Tools -> Configuration Backup and Restore

Overall Review: Would be mixed as to recommend this to people due to the configuration dropping issue. Likely would end up recommending it but would also give a warning that this does happen from time to time.

Awesome, when it works.

Pros: -Fast
-Can be used fairly quickly right out of the box
-Plenty of ports
-GUI is decent, but could use work. Makes sense to experienced users so it's of little consequence for most that would buy this.

Cons: -Settings all get wiped about once a week.
-Refuses to play nice with any machine I have that is newer than 2011. For whatever reason, when I connect my ps4, desktop, or laptop, they can't access internet on my network. However, When I connect any other console or computer, they DO have internet access.

Overall Review: I wish I could give this device 5 eggs, but considering that it plays favorites with my devices and I had to give up on keeping my custom settings, I planned to knock off one egg. I was excited to get this device to network my whole apartment together, but was severely disappointed when I found I couldn't use it with half my personal devices. My roommate and friends had no trouble with my switch, however, so their light teasing knocks off the second egg.

Simple Managed Switch

Pros: Configuration changes, booting, all happen very fast. The menu system is quick to navigate for a managed switch.

Cons: Loses configuration settings.

Overall Review: I own (3) of these switches. The oldest one (about 1 years) just started to lose its configuration every day. The switch is connected to a battery backup so power isn't a problem. I'm currently waiting RMA on it now.

I run with 8 VLAN's at home, and cant agree with the Trunk port problem another user has. That user probably doesn't understand network terminology differences between Cisco products and everything else. I have 4 trunk ports on each switch for Hyper-V and VM servers and inter-connectivity between switches. It works flawlessly when the switch is working.
