Is this the A1 or A2 hardware version?

Mine was an A2, but it kept locking up on me. so I returned it. I'd recommend doing a google search about "unauthorized access backdoor found in d-link router firmware code" before you buy any D-Link routers. I bought http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704039&Tpk=TP-LINK%20TL-WR841N and upgraded the firmware using OpenWrt - super easy process.

Do I need a modem to use this with century link dsl?

Yes, and CenturyLink should supply it. All you should do is set it to "bridge mode" and enter the DSL account details into the setup screen of the D-Link router. If they don't supply one, you can buy one of the D-Link modems and use that. Setup should be a piece of cake, D-Link do make good routers & modems and setup usually takes only a few minutes.
