No and their is no cap locks notification. If I had known their was no Caps notification I would not of bought it.

Is this PC brand new or refurbish?

This is a brand new laptop, I've been shopping with Newegg for over 5 years continuously and what they advertised, always was delivered.
Not to mention once on sale with additional promo discount, prices are lower hands down.
This laptop is well worth the money for daily use.

Question 3

I am a college student. I use my laptop for papers and web surfing, no gaming. Is this laptop ok for that?

I never play any games on it. I do a lot of banking and shopping on it. I make all my purchases for just about everything online and get it shipped directly to my home. I bought this laptap because it was recommended to me by my 22 year old son who knows everything about computers. He can put a system together from scratch. So if he says its good, its good. I'm sure you'll do fine. Just let me make one suggestion. Buy a mouse for it. It has a built in mouse that you have to keep tapping and move around with your finger to highlight stuff and tap on it and gets to be a pain. Get the mouse.  Good luck with your purchase. By the way, it got here pretty fast, as with all their items.

does it play cds and dvds?

Yes, it plays DVDs using the ASUSDVD software that came with it. It will read CDs quite well, but I don't have a music CD handy to test it.  I'm sure it will be fine because it read the files on it perfectly.  You could probably use Windows Media Center Classic Home Cinema to read CDs (and DVDs) in case there is no cd software included.  It's free and I use it daily.  The laptop is really nice and we love it.  Hope this helps!

Is this a touch screen?

No this particular model isn't but I believe there are a few other laptops in this price range that are touch if that's what you're looking for.

Is says in the spec's that it had a SD/MMC reader. Where is it on the computer?

Good Question. I'm not sure. I don't have it in-front of me at present. It's at my Aunt's house. Since DVD Drive is on right and most other things [including USB Ports] are on the left. I'm gonna guess that it's on the left, but I'm not sure. Is it a good vacation travel computer, photo handling etc?

I haven't loaded any photos yet. I will say that it is incredibly light for the size. I would imagine that loading photos would not be an issue since it had an hdmi port and the latest USB port. The only limiting factor I see is the hard drive at only 500 gigs.

Question 8

In the description, it mentions that it features Smart Gesture technology.  However, in the Model Comparison chart, it lists the D550MA as NOT having "touch" features.  
Is this a touch screen or not?  
Can it be purchased WITHOUT the touchscreen feature?

No it does not have a touch screen, the smart gesture is just referring to the fact that the touchpad below the keyboard lets you zoom in on the screen, scroll up, down, left and right with just using two fingers. Personally I love this laptop and it works great for a high school student going into college!

Question 9

RAM

It says it's upgradable to 8GB RAM. One reviewer said there is only one slot, so 1 8GB RAM stick is needed. The very UN-helpful customer service (ASUS) said there are 2 4GB RAM slots and won't tell me how to do the upgrade. There are no access doors under the laptop to get at the RAM. Does anyone know anything about this???

I haven't taken a look at this yet, but if I do..I'll let you know.  I'm pretty sure on many laptops you will need to unscrew the entire bottom cover to get access to the motherboard and RAM slot(s).  That's most likely the case with this one.  I would probably trust the reviewer more than customer service, that there is only 1 slot.
