Powerful computer with compact portability. 6/24/2020 1:18:56 PM

Pros: I was curious about this machine because of its hybrid graphics solution and its use of the Ryzen 7 3750H. I don't game a great deal but a gamers rig has my preferred chipsets for content creation. The other purpose to which it is put involves audio recording and that 8 thread 3750H keeps up with a high sample rate. For video editing and online activities I dedicate the GTX 1660 Ti to drive a second 2k monitor. I am actually quite pleased with how well this dual display system works. Better than many desktops with which I've worked, with an easy breakdown for projects requiring portability. All in all it promises to be a versatile unit with numerous possibilities. I've had it for a couple months now and do not regret spending the money.

Cons: I am not a big fan of Microsoft. I was originally planning to eliminate Windows 10 with all that telemetry and garbage ads trying to sell me a bunch of obnoxious junk. I was going to load that puppy up with a Linux distro and just have a straight forward secure computational environment in which to do my thing. My son stayed my hand, however, pointing out compatibility issues with many nifty apps. So I set up a dual boot, thinking I would keep Windows 10 in reserve in case of emergencies. Linux does not work well on this machine. Linux could be successful on this machine with some hardware modifications and hours and hours of coding. But I was pleased to discover that 10 can be stripped down from all its funky frills, notifications and telemetry. Those chores accomplished have encouraged me to hope I might get that OS to recognize the 500 G storage drive I put in. None of that, of course, is on ASUS.

Overall Review: I would recommend this product for gamers, artists and other creative people who have uses for this sort of computational tool. Just remember, it doesn't matter how good you are; its about how good a person you hope to become.

Beware the Touchpad 6/11/2020 11:01:01 PM

Pros: It's OK for the price. Low-end gaming laptop, so it will handle most games seemlessly, but don't expect ultra quality graphics like you would for a desktop. It's fairly lightweight (though fragile), so it's not a burden to carry around.

Cons: MAJOR ISSUE: Touchpad is janky and sometimes useless. Was janky even out of the box, less than 2 months ago. Even with the lastest driver, it does not feel good to use and sometimes will bug out (scroll up or down, will only move screen up) or freeze. Looked up comments about it and there isn't a fix for it. Seems like a common problem too. Shut off the extra gesture stuff, they hardly work when the touchpad can't sense touch properly. Would definitely never use it for gaming. Plug in a mouse or controller.

Keyboard lighting has 3 settings: Bright, Brighter, or Off. I always have it off because the lowest setting is way too bright for me to see.

Storage is lacking, so don't store your Steam library on this. Just a few games.

ASUS driver updates are a serious pain to do. Be ready to step into safe mode to install, and don't trust the MyASUS app that comes preinstalled. It does not work. Look up tutorials on how the pros actually update the drivers manually.

Overall Review: I didn't this get laptop for gaming, but wanted to have the option to game if I felt like it. So far, it's OK, albeit mediocre. But for a gaming laptop that's just over 1000, what else can you expect? If you're more serious than I am, go find a better brand and/or deal.
