Noctua's DX line of coolers has become a default choice in high performance quiet cooling solutions for Intel Xeon CPUs. The i4 revision supports LGA2011 (both Square ILM and Narrow ILM), LGA1356 and LGA1366 based Xeon platforms and the new D9 model provides better performance and better compatibility than previous 9cm versions: Thanks to its 95x95mm footprint and reduced 110mm height, the NH-D9DX i4 is fully 3U compliant and clears the RAM slots on LGA2011 Square ILM and LGA13xx. At the same time, the dual tower design and the new NF-A9 PWM guarantee further improved quiet cooling performance. Fitted with the professional SecuFirm2™ mounting system and bundled with Noctua's industrial-grade NT-H1 thermal compound, the NH-D9DX i4 3U forms a complete premium quality package for quietly cooling Xeon based workstations and servers.

Works well, quiet, good deal

Pros: I like a quite computer. One of my concerns was would it produce too much noise? But that is not a problem. The cooler fan is quiet. I cannot hear it run with the chassis close up and sitting beside my desk.

I haven't checked temperatures lately, but when I first started my new computer system the temperature of the Intel i7 CPU temperature was 51 C degrees. That is a temperature at the cool end of the scale from what I've been told.

Cons: It is tall, so no harm in measuring before ordering. I had no problems fitting it in my mid-tower chassis case though.

Overall Review: I have no qualms about recommending this CPU cooler. I've been using it for about 1 1/2 months with no problems.

Server cooling Solution

Pros: - Compact
- Easy to follow directions
- Came with LGA 1366 backplate screws
- Very well packaged
- High performance cooling
- Fits in square style dual socket motherboards

Cons: - Price
- Noctua brown

Overall Review: But you're not going to see the color of the fans inside a 4U chassis anyway :)

I got a great deal on a dual socket LGA 1366 board with CPUs and wanted to rebuild a good home media server. However it didn't come with cooling.

Who knew that in the end, I would be spending more in the system's value in CPU fans. But this was one of the few that you could get that wasn't an Intel stock cooler that would fit in dual socket square or narrow boards. These coolers touch but not intersect.

Plus Noctua has great resale value so if I find my next server venture outgrowing these, I kept all the original boxes and hardware.

Now enough rambling from me and onto what's important, the cooling. A 4U chassis can get stuffy, especially when the hard-drive planes are filled, but even with case congestion, a prime95 burn-in test will not push the processors over 40°C and the fans I kept at 40% fixed using a NZXT Grid+ controller. When you get past 50% they will get audible, so if you're using this for a HTPC box, you may want to keep that in mind. However if your server is hidden away somewhere, you can see values as low as 30°C under full synthetic load on these dual 95w TDP processors with the fans cranked up. Without the fans running, I saw temperatures hover between 55°C and 60°C so you could technically run fanless if you're using a less congested server with proper case flow. But this will be a per-user basis, what works for me may not work for someone using dual 140w+ TDP processors like a high end 2011v3 processor.

Not to mention can't beat Noctua reliability. What I have is by far not a mission critical server by any means, however I feel that you could rely on these to keep your system cool for years. I did consider water-cooling since 120mm AIOs are about the same price as these and wouldn't give me the problems of socket clearance, but I highly doubt they'd stand reliably against 24/7 ontime.

Now that you've read all my stream of consciousness review, reward yourself with a beer!

3u?

Pros: it cools well and does what it says except...

Cons: I have 3 different 3u cases and this doesn't fit in any of them. with and without motherboard trays. so... yeah. glad it's a paperweight and the fan is at least useful

Excellent cooling AND whisper quiet. A true win-win product!

Pros: - Awesome cooling. Keeps my E5 2680 v2 (115w TDP) processor at 22 C idle, and 35 C load.
- Much *much* quieter than my old Dynatron R14 cooler.
- Easy install. Four screws, includes special screwdriver, includes brackets for both square and narrow ILM.
- Great flexibility. Allows orienting in multiple directions, so you can point it at your exhaust fan whether it's on the rear or on the top of your case.

Cons: None really. Yes the price is high, but the performance is amazing, so worth it. Only "con" I can think of, and this is a real nit pick, is that the screws are not phillips head, they're a very small size of allen head. But they include the tool, so ya can't really complain.

Overall Review: Using it on a Supermicro X9SRL-F with Xeon E5-2680 v2 processor. Note that depending on how close your memory slots are to the CPU socket, you might need low profile sticks to fit under this cooler. On my X9SRL, I'm not using the slots closest to the socket, so there's plenty of room. On this board, it is only a potential issue if you're running two DIMMs per channel. The take away here, is that you should measure before buying. But this is true with all aftermarket coolers, so you know this already I'm sure.

Great results with two different builds

Pros: First build was with a 4628L v4 (75w) and the second with a salvaged 5820k (140w) rig that was previously using water cooling and an insane amount of fans. Even with the huge TDP difference, this cooler was able to handle the 5820k. The noise reduction using this cooler and phasing out two chassis fans along with two water cooling fans is amazing.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: Was at first concerned with the 5820k during the rebuild letting sit within UEFI, it was reaching 60C. Previous water cooler setup would hover around 35c if left in UEFI. After all the drivers were loaded with Win10 1803, the temps came back down to 36-40c using the Noctua fan on full speed from within bios and one single standard case fan. Next step is to test with Ubuntu 18.04

Quiet and fits in the needed space

Pros: Supports ILM narrow CPU mounts
quiet
cools nice

Cons: I wish the ducts would raise the fins a bit taller, when pairing with a narrow ILM cpu mount, it requires a low-profile memory stick. Isn't a huge deal as I have 8 dimm slots so it will be a little while before I am affected

Great cooler

Pros: -Relatively easy installation
-Great temps
-low noise

Cons: -Price

Overall Review: Assembly goes without a hitch unless you glaze over the directions.
This is my first experience with a Noctua cooler and it was a great experience. Currently this sits atop a Xeon E5-2670 in a HAF 912. Even when running at 100% load for 30 hours it keeps my processor running cool around 60C maximum. Would recommend to those needing a narrow mounting cooler. Otherwise go with a 212 EVO or something similar.

Comes with the best thermal paste as possible. (looks like silver mix). More than enough for 2 or 3 applications.
