Does this thing have a battery meter for each handset in the display?

Yes it does.  I had purchased a VTech system that was a total piece of junk - poor sound quality and flimsy handsets that I returned and replaced with this Panasonic system.  Much happier with it.  The only thing lacking is an audible alert when there is a new message on the answering machine.  There is only a flashing light, so if you don't remember to look at the machine when you return, you won't know there is a message.  It is slightly annoying as for decades, my other systems had the alert.

Does the base handset have the ability to jack in a headset?

There is no base handset. All handsets are the same and can be placed on the base or individual chargers to charge. 
The base itself does not have a headset port. It only has a power supply port and standard RJ9  phone plug receiver.
This panasonic phone will work without a land line and can utilize/link up with two separate cell phone. When your cell phone rings, all handsets ring at a remote location in your house. Each line/cellphone  can be set for different ring tones.

I don't need the answering machine. Can I turn it off?

The phone supports a cell-only mode and it will automatically place any call you make through the cell phone by default and without pressing the 'cell1' or 'cell2' soft key.  You may find more information about this capability in the manual.

Does each hand set have a speed dial feature?

Each of the five handsets has access to all the "phone book" number entries, if that's the meaning of the "speed dial" feature.
The "phone book" has a capacity of over ~3000 entries.

It's nice that only the base phone with the answering machine needs to be connected to the phone line.  The handset stands are only connected to a/c power for recharging their handset battery.

Being the caregiver for a disabled friend, she likes the "intercom feature" that gives her the ability to page and speak to me at any of the four other locations throughout our home.

The speaker phone is nice too, in that it makes it easier to hear and converse along with others in a conference setting without having to hold the handset up to your ear.

will this work with two land lines that are connected with wires?

I think it will, because you just plug in only one land line to the main core, no matter which land lines you plug in, it should work for you fine......correct me if I'm wrong....thank you.

after you've "linked" to your cell phone and set that all up, the calls that come in on your CELL while linked show their "ID" and the Panasonic can even "speak" their ID for you if you want.

but calls that still come in over the landLine are NOT displayed
or identifies UNLESS you have "Caller ID" as part of your service package

BTW the Pan systems do NOT require a Land Line to work at all
if you want to get rid of the old "ball and chain" and exclusively
use your Cell service

Can you link 9 handsets to this system?

No, it comes with 5 handsets and you can buy an additional handset and link a total of six handsets to it.

Question 10

Does this system support broadcast intercom? I want to hit the intercom button and have it ring all handsets so I don't have to guess what room my husband is in.

Yes, the intercom button is also a locator. When you hit the intercom you will have options, press 0 and all handsets will be ringing, or you can select 1-6 for specific handset to ring and be and intercom once someone picks up.
