The red light blinks when it's initially connecting after being plugged in and then it stays solid red.

The light also blinks during data transfers.

PS this is by far my favorite USB drive I've owned.  Very fast and plenty of space.

Question 2

Does it come with the lanyard string so you can carry it on your keyring?

So far the flash drive is very nice. Mine didn't come with a lanyard string. It was formatted as FAT32 and I reformatted it to NTFS.

It seem fast to me and the price was very good. I got a 64 Gig drive for $30.

I'm not sure I really like the way it slides to protect the end - it is a little resistant - but I guess that is good.

I'm happy with the performance. Now we'll see how long it lasts.

What file system does this drive utilize?  FAT32?

Yes, it is FAT32.  I've been very pleased with it.  I purchased one from a previous manufacturer that failed within a couple months.  If I were purchasing another PNY I'd go for the 256 GB version of this.

Question 4

If it's 64gb, why when I plug it in it say 18.6GB free of 31.9GB? Also, on the casing itself of the USB it has 64gb....

Mine says 19.8GB used, 39.7GB free, 59.6GB capacity.  The difference from 64GB to 59.6GB is the difference in what a "GB" is.  In disk manufacture speak, 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes.  When Windows displays the space, 1GB = 1024 *1024 *1024 or 1,073,741,824 bytes, a 7.3% difference.  Windows uses the larger number to calculate the space in GB, resulting in a smaller number of GB.

There is some lost to formatting, etc, also.

If yours is truly saying that it is only 31.9GB TOTAL CAPACITY, then I suggest that you run the Disk Manager and check to see if the disk is partitioned.  Disk Manager will display the partitions.

Question 5

What is the maximum file size that I can transfer over at a time? Usually I'm limited to 4GB at a time, meaning any file larger than 4GB I cannot transfer. Will this allow me to transfer more than 4 at a time?

I will say yes.  I transfer my bought DVD movies to this drive and than talk it out to the RV on our trips and watch moves on our TV.  Some of my DVD movies are 24 gig or bigger.  I have no proplem transferring those big files and watching them on TV.  Hope that helps sir

I'm not very technical and I have no idea how to reformat as some below have stated they needed to do.  First how would you know you needed to reformat and secondly, is 3.0 compatible with an older laptop of few years that uses 2.0?  I realize it says it is compatible but sometimes I find that is only so if it is relatively new product not older with vista.

1) USB 3.0 is backwards compatible (aka will work) on older computers that only have USB 1.0 or 2.0 ports.

The issue here is speed of transfer between the flash drive and your desktop/laptop. USB 3.0 drives have the ABILITY to take advantage of faster data transfer speeds, but only if you have a USB 3.0 port. If you do not, it will work, but just at the slower supported speeds of previous gen USB data transfer speeds.

2) On the formatting question, the simplest/most common reasons that you might choose to format a flash drive is to erase all of the data stored on it in a way that would make that data difficult for someone to recover, or if the flash drive had a corruption issue and was no longer recognized by your desktop/laptop.

For the first type, you would plug in the flash drive, wait for your computer to "recognize" it, then right-click on the drive letter for that flash drive, and select "Format."

For the second type, your computer, when you plug in the flash drive, would indicate that it could not recognize the drive or was unable to read data off of it. You could, in that case, try a different usb port on your computer, try a different computer, try one of the recovery software tools that can be found for free or $$$ on the internet, or take it to a professional/business who would try to recover your data (that is usually a VERY pricey option).

If your data is not important, however, then you could simple format the flash drive in the hope that the action would restore your flash drive to functionality.

How do I use it?

I am very pleased that I purchased this flash drive.  It's worked flawlessly since I've had it.  There is a plastic sleeve at the end that "slips" back over the unit, although mine was originally very tight and difficult to get it to move.  Once back you simply plug it into a USB port, although you'll only get the benefit of USB 3.0 transfer speeds when you insert it unto a USB 3.0 port.  It automatically will revert back to USB 2.0 if you don't.  On my Win7 system it automatically loaded drivers.

does this work on both Mac and Windows? i need a flashdrive that can transfer files/pictures from mac to windows. the previous one didnt work and i lost many pictures.

Any flashdrive can be used on both Windows and OSX if you format it as a FAT32 drive.  Keep in mind that FAT32 has a maximum drive size of 2TB and a maximum file size is 4GB.  That means that you can't move a file larger than 4GB at one time, but you can hold up to the 64GB limit of this flashdrive.

Why don't Newegg's specs for this USB drive's read/write speeds match PNY's specs on PNY's website? PNY claims speeds up to 95MB/s read and 60MB/s write on its website.

Ive been getting anywhere from 60-125MB/s writes. Reads are probably around there if not higher
