Top choice!

Pros: This Panasonic Lumix is my sixth. It is my favoriote of the bunch. I enjoy it more each day that I use it. The manual focus, and the zoom range, are both located on the lens barrel. They move with superb smoothness adjusting the best optics in the business. The proof is in the p[ictures that it takes. The image stabilization allows me to take accurate pictures at 1/6 of a second when hand held. I also own a tripod, but mostly it stays home. The white balance is accurate no matter the light conditons when auto is selected. It is sturdy, well built, and the extra weight is purely a plus. Love it! This camera will be a keeper for many years to come. I began with a Cannon Tl. and then moved to a Nikon F-3 many years ago. This FZ 50 brings me far more joy then either.

Cons: The 10 megs is overkill as half that amount would have been plenty enough.

Other Thoughts: Those whom claim the optics are not really Leica are in need of a serious eye examination.

Hard to beat considering price/quality

Pros: Excellent lens and great 12x zoom from 35mm to 420. Manual controls. Looks and feels like a SLR camera. Comparing to an SLR is not a fair comparison because you are getting a product that is a third of the price you would pay for the combination of camera/lenses in the SLR format. Also some conveniences of this camera over SLR are that you won't have the problem with dust or carrying a load of lenses to accomplish the same task. A variety of settings. Lens goes from 2.8 to 11.

Cons: Sensor is small. Panasonic put 10 Mpx where there can only go 6 or 7. Maybe in the future they can make the sensor larger but that is almost impossible when you have a 12X Zoom. Look at zoom lenses in SLR format that are only a 3X or 4X and when zooming out you get darken corners in your photos. Therefore I think the size of the sensor is a trade off for the convenience of having a good powerful zoom lens.

Pros: Very nice looking camera and I love it so far. The specs of it are awesome, but most of the reviews online don't give it any justice. Anyone giving it lower than 4 or 5 out of 5 stars or lower than a 7 or 8 out of 10 just doesn't know how to use a camera properly.

10.1 MP, 12x Optical zoom with 21.4x extended zoom, hot shoe for external flash, swivel screen, manual zoom and focus, lens hood, and the flash has excellent range. This camera is comfortable to handle and is well built, and easy to use. The menus are easy to navigate through and pretty self explanitory.

The pictures are amazing quality and the zoom, auto-focus, and image stabilization work really well.

Cons: The strap it comes with is fairly thick and doesn't flex well with the stationary strap mounts on the camera.

Other Thoughts: I had seen a really nice photo someone took of the moon with this camera, unfortunately I wasn't able to replicate that. This camera has the capability to do a lot of cool things, but I'm not quite sure how to do them. I'll be taking a class at the community college here so I can learn how to use it better.

Next best thing to a DSLR

Pros: Great zoom range and control. Gorgeous pictures in bright conditions and highly customizable through manual settings and programs.

Cons: Due to its small (CCD) sensor, pictures in low light are extremely grainy. I wish Panasonic would have opted for a larger image sensor rather than pixel-stuffing, but nobody asks what size the sensor is- MP sell cameras.

Other Thoughts: If what you really want is a DSLR, but don't have a thousand dollars to spare, I recommend this camera. I also recommend a 2GB card b/c the 16MB card this comes with holds about 5 pictures.

Workhorse

Pros: Wonderful zoom. Fast image recording. Fantastic colours. Fairly intuiative layout.

Cons: Compression. Even at the lowest compression (not Raw) mode the pictures turn out a blurry mess. Sized down to a resonable resolution this compression is virtually unnoticable. Raw mode eats up a 2gig card pretty quickly.

Other Thoughts: I've loved using this camera in the field so far. So far pictures I've taken have been in full sunlight with occasional clouds. I've been stitching panoramas together and the results have been fantastic.
Buy a tripod with a quick-release head, this camera shines both on and off a mount.

good zoom poor picture quality

Pros: 12x zoom, saves in RAW, focus rings are nice

Cons: Camera is big! The picture quality isn't as good as I expected it to be. Even shooting in RAW the pictures then inside are grainy expecially under low light. Hopefully outside pictures turn out better.

Great camera

Pros: It has almost everything you could possibly want short of interchangeable lemses.

Cons: Somewhat large and heavy. Not as intuitively designed as the reviews have indicated.

Other Thoughts: I couldn't make up my mind whether to buy his model or the FZ6. The 6 is a toy compared to this model.

A Really Great Camera

Pros: Leica Lens. Tons of useable features. Great pics. Easy-to-use menus. Having a manual zoom on a digital camera.

Cons: If you use autofocus, it can be a little slow to keep up with you. Could be very easy to lose lens cap.

Other Thoughts: This is a really great camera that is easy to use in all modes.
