Great NAS

Pros: Fast Hardware RAID and good ethernet performance. Good configuration options for performance settings on NFS,SMB(CIFS), and flash memory. Very stable. A great systems, I couldn't be happier. Easy access to hardware internals too.

Cons: Only that they don't give ssh access... yet.

Other Thoughts: I got this NAS because I wanted to have redundancy for my data incase of a drive failure. This is one of the best personal NAS devices I've had the pleasure to deal with. I run it with RAID5 mounted for home partitions with no problem and rarely can notice ANY difference between local and network storage speeds. My desktop only has a 100Mb/s NIC so on reads I get about 81Mb/s throughput which is about maxed on a 100Mb network (due to signal noise and protocol overhead), I just bought a Gigabit card from newegg to test it out to see how fast this puppy really goes. I was getting about 55Mb/s write speed (again over 100 Base T).

The Whole is Less than the Sum of the Parts

Pros: Large Capacity, Inexpensive

Cons: I have a client with a small database application. Only three people use the application which runs in Foxpro. I tried to replace their old Novell 3.2 server with this device. The app runs on Win98. Initially there were compatibility problems with Win98 that I spent a day troubleshooting. I thought I got past that when I turned off "CIFS force case sensitivity."

After install, my client's three user application ran at a glacial pace. As long as only one user is in, it is fast at 3 seconds between screen changes. As soon as another gets in, screen changes slow to 35 to 40 seconds.

My technically unsophisticated client looked at me and summed it up: "Humph, a one user network."

When my clients external backup failed that evening (All they do is run backup my pc to a cd and copy files), I was really spooked so I pulled the plug and restored the system to its pre-upgrade state.

Other Thoughts: I think that this technology is immature. All of the parts and technologies in the box sound great, but whatever it is that ties them all together is apparently not ready for prime time. I don't know, but I suspect that this uses some form of software raid on an open source platform.

Manufacturer Technical support was not helpful. I solved the Win98 compatibility issue on my own (or so I thought). I inquired about the performance (My install was running Raid 1 with hot spare), and I asked if switching to Raid 5 would help. I didn't receive a response.

I later tried raid 0 in my office to see if performance would improve, and I don't think that it did.

Best In Class

Pros: This NAS has the most flexibility and functionality in it's class. It covers 99.99% of the spectrum of users that need network attached storage. We've used this on a network with Domain security for a few months and it continues to impress. The firmware even automatically updates if you want it to. Features are far too many to list.

Cons: Firmware has a permissions bug on the backup. Can hold a 120mm fan but comes with an 80mm one, so a tad louder than needs to be, however then fan can be calibrated via the firmware which can slow it down to somewhat quiter levels.

Other Thoughts: Why buy a server when you can have this sweet and easy device?

Buyer Beware!

Pros: Unit has all kinds of pro's if it actually worked.

Cons: Worked like a charm for about 1 month and then all heck broke loose. Unit will only work for 3 to 4 weeks at a time, and then it crashes. Raid array is lost, all data is bye-bye. Automatic backups using NAS unit software stop working about 3 to 5 days or so before crash, so 3 to 5 days of data is lost! Usb ports and ethernet ports keep loosing connectivity (have to keep disconnecting and reconnecting usb devices and network cable).

I bought this unit to replace a regular computer/single hard drive cheapie file server (wanting long term stability and solid data protection) yet at least when my cheapie crashed, backups hadn't stopped days before.

Also, Infrant is insisting I remove the hard disks from unit before sending in unit for RMA as "we do not sell these units with hard disks installed". Which is crazy, since I contacted Newegg and they tell me they don't modify units once received from manufacturer.

Buyer beware, get something else.

Other Thoughts: My firm has lost so many man hours and data from this buggy device it is not even funny. This unit should be a setup, plug it in and forget about it device, yet it is definetly not!

Really, just drop your data out a window. Or store 5lb magnets on your hard disks. That is how safe and secure this NAS unit is.

Oh, had to use the word cheapie because original "term" used was filterd out as being potentialy offensive :)

Better than sliced bread!!!

Pros: There is Nothing this little guy doesn't do. Fastest I've used. Easy user admin, especially with Active Directory. Cheap!

Cons: Tad loud, not a lot, but still hearable.

Other Thoughts: This little guy is the best NAS I've ever used. Some here are expecting SATA local performance in a network device, which won't happen. I get as much throughput as any other PC connected to the network would send data to or from me. I love how it keeps track of updates automatically. And, that it e-mails me with all the information I need to keep it running. It's almost a "set it and forget it" NAS. I haven't used the USB drive connectivity yet, but love that idea too. It even monitors UPS devices connected to it. If you need NAS, this is the one!

Slow for Backups

Pros: Reliable
Quiet
Cheap

Cons: Slow Data Transfer

Other Thoughts: Too slow to use as a backup device for large amounts of data. I bought this primarily to use as a backup device that could be located in a different building on my gige lan. Bad Choice !!

I've verified using IOmeter that it meets data transfer rates that are buried in reviews and in the Infrant Forums (They are not in the specifications).

Unfortunately, this translate in the real world to about 3 MB / second. This means that a 36GB backup that takes 30 minutes on a cheap internal hard drive can take 4-7 hours depending on your backup configuration. If you want to save a 1GB file, be prepared to wait about 3-5 minutes. (speed fluctuates).

Decent

Pros: Great DAS or NAS for the price. Functionality and Performance are decent. Using in a production environment with a UPS and works great for this particular workgroup.

Cons: The WebGUI is a little slow and the unit comes preconfigured RAID-X. So if you want to reconfigure as RAID-5 with a hot spare, you have to delete the volume it comes with and create a new one...
