Western Digital Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: Works as expected.

Cons: None right now...

Other Thoughts: I wrote a two-egg review previously (and can't seem to find a way to delete it) that should be ignored. The issues I was having with this drive weren't being caused by the drive...

3 out of 5 eggs Awkward Mounting 05/02/2013

This review is from: Nippon Labs HDB-250 2.5" HDD/SS Metal Bracket Black Color

Pros: This looks nice and is really durable, exactly what I expected except...

Cons: The holes on the base of this item are perfect for mounting the SSD, but the holes on the side are extremely small and I honestly don't know what they expect anyone to do with the tiny screws they provided with the kit... In any event, the threading on these holes are just slightly smaller than my case's screws, so I'm probably going to end up having to rethread them... It's not that big of a deal for me, just a hassle, and like others have said there's no reason you can't just leave it loose in the case so long as you don't move it frequently...

Other Thoughts: The size of the holes on the side of an internal HDD seem pretty standard, I don't understand why they wouldn't manufacture this product to meet the same standard...

2 out of 5 eggs Guess it happens to everyone eventually... 05/02/2013

This review is from: Western Digital Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: This drive worked okay at first, in fact I didn't notice anything was wrong until after I had managed to install everything on it...

Cons: After everything was installed and all of my settings for Windows were in place I started noticing that my system would be shut down when I expected it to have gone to sleep, when I booted it up I got the "Windows didn't shut down properly" prompt, as if a crash had occurred... Which was odd, because while I'm here at my PC nothing appears to be wrong, I checked the error logs and found upwards of 3,000 errors logged within 48 hours from the HDD, and still being logged every few minutes...

Never experienced anything like this, but my professional-tech friend says it will likely get worse until the drive fails completely... and that I need to RMA it as soon as I can get everything backed up... Which really sucks because I don't even have a trust-worthy external or anything to back things up with at the moment, so now I have to wait for that to arrive too before I can start the RMA process...

Other Thoughts: I gave two eggs because honestly I can't tell that there's anything wrong with this drive other than the warnings from Windows... also this sort of thing happens, and is apparently unavoidable... I do wish companies were more careful about sending out faulty equipment, though... This sort of thing is just incredibly stressful and seems like it should be more avoidable.
