Western Digital Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: more than 1 year

Pros: I have acquired probably 30 of these 1TB Black drives over the years. They are simply the best 1TB drives out there...aside maybe from the RAID Edition variants

Cons: One of the Blacks was DOA from NewEgg. New Egg doesn't use proper WD packaging, so it may have been damaged in shipping, I don't know, BUT my real gripe is this:

it's not right that customers have to pay return shipping to replace faulty merchandise. NewEgg should be responsible for the whole transaction and RMA swap. Other companies handle all costs when RMA situations arise.

SAMSUNG STORY Station 1TB USB 2.0 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • neweggOwned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: Elegant, simple, sturdy design. Always works, just not very quickly.

Cons: I bought this drive thinking it would be on the fast end of external USB drives, given what's inside and the new design. Turns out it's noticeably slower than my WD MyBook and Seagate free agent go (which is a 2.5" 5400rpm portable). Very disappointed by the performance.

Other Thoughts: I guess it would be good for an occasional backup drive...if you've got a few hours to kill.

1 out of 5 eggs Could have been a great enclosure 12/02/2009

This review is from: SANS DIGITAL MS2UT RAID 0, 1 2 3.5" Drive Bays USB 2.0 & eSATA External RAID Subsystem

Pros: Solid construction, fast when it works, good value in theory.

Cons: The unit randomly reports failed drives, but the drives always check out. I sent it in last year after it reached a point where any drive I put it would fail to run. I sent it in under warranty. It came back and worked great for another year. Then the same thing started happening. If I put heavy read/write load on it, the drives disappear and the screen (which has a disconcerting flicker now) says one or both failed.

Other Thoughts: This is now the most unreliable drive enclosure I've ever owned.
