Seagate Backup Plus 1TB 2.5
  • neweggOwned For: 1 month to 1 year

3 out of 5 eggs Questionable build quality 12/02/2013

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 1TB 2.5" USB 3.0 Red Portable Hard

Pros: Light, portable, works pretty seamlessly between Mac and PC

Cons: Build quality

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive from a box store a couple months ago because I'm a teacher and we have almost exclusively windows pcs at school but I do all my grading and stuff on a Mac. In that sense, it's nice to be able to have it work with both without reformatting the drive initially. However, today I noticed the top part with the light on it was coming off the rest of the drive which concerns me more than a little, especially because I haven't had it all that long

ASUS VivoBook X202E-DH31T 11.6

4 out of 5 eggs Just don't expect anything earth shattering 08/10/2013

This review is from: ASUS VivoBook X202E-DH31T 11.6" Touchscreen Notebook Intel Core i3 3217U 4GB 500 GB HDD Intel HD Graphics 4000

Pros: I'm a Teach For America teacher and don't have an office in the school I teach at, so I needed something well built I could use for work and in the classroom, and for that it fits the bill. It feels sturdy and like it'll last a while (with some tweaks I'll get to later). Since I'm TFA, I'm on a budget, so that's the main reason why I picked it up, but also all our AV equipment at the school is a million years old and accepts VGA but not HDMI, so that was a selling point as well. Personally, I'm not a fan of the touchscreen and was told by the minimum wage Microsoft Store worker that there was no way to turn it off, but I haven't really looked into that to see if it was really the case. For the students I teach, especially the ones with Autism or a nonverbal disability, it works well so I guess I can put up with that.

Cons: The preloaded touchpad drivers are straight up awful. You get phantom clicks everywhere. You can download touchpad drivers from the Samsung site for a series 5 laptop and that will solve most of your problems, but I use an external mouse most of the time anyway. The fan runs CONSTANTLY, and the most CPU intensive thing I do on the computer is streaming soccer games every weekend but no matter what you do the fan runs full blast, and it can get a little annoying since its far from silent but not loud by any means. When I get the money I'll replace the HD with a solid state, but that wont happen for a while. Lastly, it takes forever to charge, especially if you're using it while you're charging the battery-- which happens often since the battery lasts at most 4 hours if you use it conservatively

Other Thoughts: All in all I'm happy. Not overjoyed, but happy. Really, if you're okay with knowing this won't be the end all and be all of laptops you can come to terms with it. Really, this laptop preforms pretty well (although my last laptop was a Pentium II) and its cheap enough where you can afford to buy a mouse to compensate for the trackpad terribleness and a solid state to compensate for the hard drive mediocreness and still come out ahead of the game
