ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Gaming Motherboard

Pros: Ports, price, performance, overclocking, LEDs

Cons: port placement, fan connector placement

Other Thoughts: This is one of the best motherboards out there if you are on the fence pick it up you will not be disappointed. My only gripe is the placement of the SATA ports. If you have a relatively large graphics card, and if you are getting this board then you should, the card covers up all but 2 of the SATA ports making it very difficult to plug or unplug any new SATA devices. Also the chassis fan power connectors are oddly spaced out on the board. All in all though easy to install and use and the UI BIOS is very easy to learn and get used to.

Intel Core i7-4790K Devil's Canyon Quad-Core 4.0 GHz LGA 1150 88W BX80646I74790K Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4600
  • neweggOwned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: Great speed, price when it's on sale, unlocked for easy overclocking

Cons: Heating issues out of the box

Other Thoughts: So I picked this guy up for my gaming machine and I have to say I am impressed with it's performance. The only downside to it is when used with the stock fan the idle temp was 79. It even shut down my computer due to overheating when I tried to install Windows. Picked up an after market cooler for better performance and the temp went down to a more reasonable 37. Not a big deal to pick up the better cooling device if you are going to overclock it anyway.

Pros: Great when it's on sale, supports multiple connections, UI is easy to use, gigabit

Cons: VERY short range on the 5 GHz, takes a long time to setup

Other Thoughts: Bought this on sale so I think it was a good value. It was a little difficult to setup, there were times where I thought it had frozen so I had to restart the setup process. When it finally did finish it took over 10 minutes. The average user would think that there would be a defect waiting around that long to get online. Instructions could be a little more clear as far as how long you should wait.

The 5 GHz frequency is nice, but VERY short range. In the next room within line of sight about 20 feet away I was only getting 1 bar of signal strength, but the 2.4 frequency works fine. Have plans to setup a gigabit network with file share so the USB port on the modem will come in handy when I attach an external hard drive.
