MSI Radeon RX 480 DirectX 12 RX 480 GAMING X 4G 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support ATX Video Card

Pros: - The speed and value is decent
- construction/back plate, and the fact that it is quiet. The card is wide so probably it contributes to it's ability to stay quiet/cool since the fans are quite large.
- spacing. The card manages to be relatively thin in comparison to other cards I have 6970 for example. This leaves plenty of space for my other card for airflow. (The other card i currently own is a 970).

Cons: - A little bit of worst fear here. Amd drivers are not working as i'd expect. Let me explain: This video card has been nothing but trouble. I am fairly certain it is the amd drivers. Cannot control fan speed with wattman, and the fans don't always turn on when they need to so my machine will go down. Also the GPU will peg randomly at 100%. I know i can control the speed with utilities i could find online like msi afterburner. Also amd drivers are really glitchy. They will work for a while and then stop working. I have tried fresh installs of windows. Nvida really doesn't have these problems. To be honest if you go to amds site and try to get support a lot of people have the same issues. I tried to contact them and after going though multiple iterations they asked me to upload my dump to my one drive and then suddenly stopped responding to me. Really newegg isn't that great either. if you have these problems they tell you you can only return it for store credit. All around a pretty bad experience.

Other Thoughts: I won't recommend this. While, I don't really care for Nvidia's business practices and prefer what amd is doing, the most important thing is things just work out of the box, and we as consumers don't want to be bothered with this sort of thing. I have owned a lot of video cards, i can say this is the first really bad experience i have had.

Crossover 27QW Perfect Pixel 27

Pros: 1.) look for 380 you are getting a pixel perfect wqhd monitor (mine was perfect as indicated). The picture is amazing.
2.) really smooth when scrolling and watching video
3.) color is great. not washed out. It is bold and clean
4.) good quality construction

Cons: 1.) Stand has limited capabilities. Can't adjust height etc. Quality is fine though.
2.) having more 2 monitor hook ups would be nice. only has one
3.) no extra usb in the monitor.

Other Thoughts: I am really pleased with the text rendering. Particularly as a developer it is quite nice.. It is more comfortable, less eye fatigue, and it is pretty good construction.

Definitive Technology BP-8040ST Bipolar SuperTower Floorstanding Loudspeaker - Each (Gloss Black)

4 out of 5 eggs Great speaker price perhaps high 02/24/2013

This review is from: Definitive Technology BP-8040ST Bipolar SuperTower Floorstanding Loudspeaker - Each (Gloss Black)

Pros: Sound Quality: the speaker produces a really natural sound. It really is difficult to tell that it is coming form a speaker when placed properly. The sounds are accurate too. Not overly bright or mechanical and you don't miss parts of the natural sound. Having moved from a more classical view of speakers i had to get past "driver" size as being important; Apparently it isn't so forget it :) I have cheaper speakers with much larger drivers and much smaller sound.

Generally def tech has a good reputation for a reason.

i was skeptical about the built in amp. You worry when you pay a significant amount of money on something about failure points. I haven't had any issues, but have emailed them to ask about if they support replacement before purchase of amps etc and they said it was relatively easy, and they do support that scenario in the case of failure which was reassuring for me. That might be something still in the back of my head. Honestly at any where near this price point 5 year warranty doesn't provide much reassurance. I'd expect a speaker to last 20 years. It may not with built in power supplies we'll see.

Cons: Here's the problem. Look at the sale prices on speakers in general. The markup is massive. No matter how much technology goes into these they are marked up more than anything else probably in your entertainment center which often goes for all speakers. Having to pay north of 700 for a speaker clearly won't work for most people, nor in my opinion should it. They need to put these on a sale for it to make sense no matter how good they are. But they probably aren't targeting most people here :) I was able to score 2 of these on a much lower price. Generally new egg is particularly good about helping with this so hopefully they don't let us down and a sale price will pop up eventually.

Rating is really about 3.5 simply due to the price. I should not have to sell blood to enjoy my movie experience at home. Yes you get a built in sub-woofer... even so.

Other Thoughts: A note about quality speakers: I have "cheapo" speakers for the rest of my system, and intend to fill out the rest as i can budget it like many people. But at least i have something i am happy with that i can build on and will keep for many years. Swapping out speakers for home theater usage has some implications: it is best to match speakers at least by brand. Part of the problem mixing is that the sound will be different even with really good speakers and this makes it less real for surround sound usage. You can often stick in a manufacture but mixing is often not a great idea. Similar to the reason to buy good speakers to avoid sound "artifacts" mixing and matching also creates "artifacts" that aren't natural. So put some thought into what you buy. You want to be happy with it :)
