Solid Network Switch

TP-Link 5 Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch - Ethernet Splitter | Plug & Play | Fanless | Sturdy Metal w/ Shielded Ports | Traffic Optimization | Unmanaged | Limited Lifetime Protection(TL-SG105)
TP-Link 5 Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch - Ethernet Splitter | Plug & Play | Fanless | Sturdy Metal w/ Shielded Ports | Traffic Optimization | Unmanaged | Limited Lifetime Protection(TL-SG105)

Pros: For me, the most noticeable aspect of this product is how solid the construction is. It feels very solid in the hand, and the general impression is that is a very well built product. It feels more solid that my Netgear switch, also of metal construction. The size of the device is pretty standard for 5 port ethernet switches. Like most others, it has wall mounting holes on the back. The device stays very cool while under heavy load, unlike some other network switches I have owned. The metal construction and temperature lead me to believe that this switch should last for a long time. The performance of the switch is very good, mostly similar to other gigabit switches. It easily handles regular media tasks (sharing internet, gaming, streaming), but file transfers show its true performance, where it comes pretty close to theoretical bandwidth. For a very solid product, the current price ($30) is a very good deal.

Cons: None so far.

Overall Review: Overall, this is a pretty standard switch. It functions and performs exactly how you would exect it to and does so in a well constructed package. If you are unsure about this switch, I would highly recommend it.

Most Critical Review

Good Product, bad quality control

Hanns·G HG-281DPB Black 28" 3ms Widescreen LCD HDMI Monitor 500 cd/m2 800:1 Built-in Speakers
Hanns·G HG-281DPB Black 28" 3ms Widescreen LCD HDMI Monitor 500 cd/m2 800:1 Built-in Speakers

Pros: +very bright +amazing picture quality +price

Cons: -poor quality control. This is my second monitor, the first one was great for 4 days, then it stopped working and displayed only a white screen. I just got the RMA back today, Newegg was great as always. Hopefully the replacement will work. I also read many places that these don't seem to last too long...hope mine will. LCD WARRANTY IS ONLY ONE YEAR

Overall Review: Again, going on with poor quality control, I had another Hanns g monitor, a 19 inch, that failed right before a year so luckily its being repaired. I'm currently waiting for that to return

Does exactly what it's supposed to do

Rosewill 3.3-Foot Black Flat eSATA to SATA Cable - Supports 6 Gbps, 3 Gbps, and 1.5 Gbps Transfer Rates (RC-3.28-SATA-MM-BK)
Rosewill 3.3-Foot Black Flat eSATA to SATA Cable - Supports 6 Gbps, 3 Gbps, and 1.5 Gbps Transfer Rates (RC-3.28-SATA-MM-BK)

Pros: Its a cable. Which goes from eSATA to SATA. Does just that. Seems to be standard cable quality, at a standard cable price. Go figure. Performance seems to be about the same as eSATA, as expected.

Cons: No problems so far.

Overall Review: Got this cable so that eSATA hard drives can be connected to motherboard SATA ports.

Great Wireless Adapter

TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 Dual Band Wireless N900 PCI Express Adapter, 2.4 GHz 450 Mbps / 5 GHz 450 Mbps, IEEE 802.1a/b/g/n, WEP / WPA / WPA2, Plug & Play in Windows 8
TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 Dual Band Wireless N900 PCI Express Adapter, 2.4 GHz 450 Mbps / 5 GHz 450 Mbps, IEEE 802.1a/b/g/n, WEP / WPA / WPA2, Plug & Play in Windows 8

Pros: This wireless card is very fast, on my campus wireless network, the card is often twice as fast as my laptop's wireless. The reception of the card is terrific as well, it has much better signal strength and range than my laptop's card. This card works out of the box for GNU/Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X (for you hackintosh people out there).

Cons: No cons, this card is a bit pricey but it is a high performance card. Buyers should be aware of what they are getting.

Overall Review: My old card (linksys wmp110) would freeze my computer frequently under GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and sometimes Windows as well. I am very happy to have a replacement.

Great Graphics Card

GIGABYTE GV-N660OC-2GD G-SYNC Support GeForce GTX 660 2GB 192-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
GIGABYTE GV-N660OC-2GD G-SYNC Support GeForce GTX 660 2GB 192-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Pros: Performs very well, a substantial upgrade from my Radeon 5850. According to my benchmarks, there is about an 80% improvement in performance. This card can handle all modern games with the highest settings with full anti-aliasing. My 5850 struggled with games such as skyrim and battlefield 3 at 1920x1200, but this card handles them with no problem. This card is also runs considerably cooler and quieter than my 5850 would. Additionally, the card only requires 1 6 pin connector. Finally, the card looks cool with its unique cooler compared to reference cards. It counts for something. This card is also at a very good price point. The 660Ti is slightly more expensive (~$100 more at the time of writing) , but is only slightly faster.

Cons: The cooler's fan blades seem a little bit fragile, but as long as you are careful it should be fine.

Overall Review: The main reason I got this card was because Nvidia has better linux support than AMD. At the same time I got a substantially faster card for cheaper that when I first got my 5850! Overall this is a very solid card, and I would recommend it.

Good NAS drive

Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive
Seagate NAS HDD ST3000VN000 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: The performance of the drive is good. I tested this drive under eSATA and the performance is excellent: 139MB/s sequential write max 141MB/s sequential read max Here are the results from crystal disk mark: Seqential: Read: 140MB/s Write: 137.3 MB/s 512K: Read 48.16MB/s Write: 79.13MB/s 4K: Read: 0.580 MB/s Write: 1.462MB/s 4K QD32: Read: 1.189MB/s Write: 1.297MB/s Keep in mind this is under eSATA, onboard results will be slightly higher. The drive is very quiet, and under the noise of the enclosure's fan, the drive cannot be heard.

Cons: The drive is more expensive than other 3TB models. At the time of writing it is $40 more expensive that the standard Seagate 7200 RPM 3TB drive. I imagine that this price difference is supposedly attributed to reliability. This is shown by having a 1 year longer warranty compared to the other (cheaper) seagate model. Time will tell how reliable the drive is.

Overall Review: I got this drive to run create a cheap NAS and web server with a raspberry pi. Because the pi only has usb 2.0, this drive more than saturates the pi's bandwidth. I setup the drive with a gpt partition table (which you will need for > 2TB partitions) and formatted the drive to ext4. I use this setup to serve personal web content and to perform periodic automated network backups. I would not recommend this drive as an OS drive as that is not what it is designed for. I'm sure it would be fine for the job, but a buyer would be better of spending less on a drive designed for the task. This drive should be good as a NAS drive or for other data critical applications, since it is designed with reliability in mind (I would still recommend redundancy such as RAID 1, 5 for important data however). Overall, the drive is a solid product for what it is designed for, but is a bit pricey.
